25.01.2022 When agricultural scientist Bruce French was teaching agriculture in Papua New Guinea, his students had a strong message for him. They were sick of being taught about western plants and wanted to learn more about their native produce. In the five decades since, Mr French has created a database of more than 31,000 edible plants, which is almost every plant from every country on earth. His work is used to address malnutrition across the globe and in 2016, he was named an Officer of the Order of Australia.

19.01.2022 NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK 27 May to 3 June 2021 - this year’s theme is ‘More than a word. Reconciliation takes action’. It’s time to go beyond all the talk and make this year, the year you use your actions to support reconciliation. It’s time to walk the walk Australia. Reconciliation is a national effort, it is a journey for all Australians. At the heart of this journey is relationships, reconciliation is about understanding and connection between the broader Australian ...community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures. And while you may support championing reconciliation it is important to remember First Nation voices are at the heart and you are just adding your voice to the call for reconciliation. Reconciliation Australia has put together a list of 20 actions every Australian can take to make Reconciliation more than a word. And remember you don’t have to do all 20 if every Australian committed to one action we would be a long way to a just, equitable and reconciled country. To learn more or see what actions you can take visit: nrw.reconciliation.org.au/actions-for-reconciliation/

18.01.2022 The Uluru Statement From The Heart was written by more than 250 delegates from all over Australia gathered at Uluru, Northern Territory, on the lands of the Anangu people, at the First Nations National Constitutional Convention in 2017. After centuries of struggle for recognition and justice, the statement calls for the establishment of a ‘First Nations Voice’ enshrined in the Australian Constitution and the establishment of a ‘Makarrata Commission’ to supervise agreement-making and truth-telling between governments and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The project was sparked by parents and teachers feeling it was necessary to recognise and celebrate the land on which they work and learn, to honour the process of truth-telling and to forge deeper understandings of and connections to Aboriginal knowledge and cultures.

02.01.2022 NAIDOC week is an opportunity to celebrate and embrace Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, said the panellists. But they also called on non-Indigenous Australians to educate themselves about the oldest surviving culture on the earth. Ms Reid, a Wiradjuri and Wailwan woman said starting these conversations was a difficult process. "That's a sign of maturity. We are not expected to feel good, because the truth is that our history is one of bloodshed. Confronting the truth is an uncomfortable process."

01.01.2022 A snapshot on how to grow our most popular natives.

01.01.2022 At Bherwerre Beach, in Booderee NP, more than 100 prehistoric Aboriginal sites have been recorded on the Bherwerre Peninsula, some probably dating back to the stabilisation of the sea level about 6,000 years ago. Most sites are shell middens, but there are also rock shelters, burial sites, ceremonial grounds, stone-flaking sites and axe-sharpening grooves. The distribution of these recorded sites emphasises the importance of the eastern end of Wreck Bay. The high density of midden sites on the Bherwerre Peninsula mirrors the preferred fishing zones of the present community. Courtesy Booderee NP
