19.01.2022 Sudden death of a best mate In 2018, Jai who was epileptic had a seizure, hit his head, went into cardiac arrest, and died. He was 16 years old. Sam was devastated. It felt like he'd lost a limb. "I thought: 'You have [Jai], this amazing kid, 16 years old, who's going to achieve everything, had all these plans in place, he had so much potential for his future, and it all got taken away'," Sam said. "And you've got me who does have potential, but he's throwing that potenti...al away." Jai's death shifted something within Sam, and he hasn't touched drugs since. "It's almost like my body's rejected that side of my life, where I just am no longer interested at all," he said. "If I smell marijuana, I'll throw up just from the smell of it, because my body rejects it." ABC 21.2.21 See more

18.01.2022 Labor launches new campaign highlighting aged care horror stories. Australia’s fundamentally broken aged care system - and its impact on grandparents, parents... and children - will be highlighted in a new campaign federal Labor will launch on Monday. The campaign consists of a series of short videos and amounts to a pre-emptive strike against the Morrison government on the eve of the Aged Care Royal Commission’s final report. SMH 21.2.21

09.01.2022 Surviving in a rural area...Volunteer firefighter Rodney O'Keeffe had been under a cold shower at the Jingellic football oval for more than an hour. ABC 20.2.21... He was shivering despite the intense heat, trying to bring some relief to his body, which was covered in severe burns. His canary-yellow uniform had burned into his skin and a local at the bushfire relief centre had to tear it off. There was no medication available to relieve the searing pain. But while he was waiting in agony at the NSW border town, there was help close by a veteran remote area nurse had been trying to get to him. She was stuck at a roadblock, less than a kilometre away, on the other side of the border in Victoria.

07.01.2022 'IF IT'S READY TO GO, LET'S ROLL IT OUT': ANTHONY ALBANESE ON VACCINE WAIT, SMH 23.12.20 Labor Leader Anthony Albanese has urged the federal government to roll out the Pfizer vaccine faster, saying "if it's ready to go, let's roll it out". He said the federal government will make a decision in regard to the Pfizer vaccine in January, but the rollout won't commence until March. "That makes no sense. If the approval is made in January, it should be rolled out in January as a ma...tter of urgency," he told ABC News Breakfast. "And also there's only been provision made for 10 million doses - quite clearly we're going to need more than that. And so we need more vaccines, more quickly." "If there was a vaccine available, there would be queues that are much longer than the queues that have been there to have COVID testing in places like the northern beaches and, indeed, in the inner west, in recent days. "This is having an impact on people's lives, it's having an impact on their mental health. All those people who are going to miss out on sitting down for Christmas lunch with the family, and if the TGA approves the vaccine in January, it just seems to me incredibly complacent for the government to say, 'No, we'll just sit around for another couple of months before it's available'." "Surely, we should be making it available as soon as possible." See more

03.01.2022 Australias vaccination program to begin today , ABC 21.2.21 "Australia's COVID-19 vaccination program will start today, Health Minister Greg Hunt says. Prime Mi...nister Scott Morrison is expected to be among the first people to receive the jab. The first Pfizer doses had been due to be administered tomorrow but Mr Hunt told the ABC's Insiders program it had been brought forward by a day. "Today the first group of people will be vaccinated, commencing with two of our aged care residents, our critical aged care staff, front line workers," he said. "We also know that the Chief Medical Officer and the Chief Nurse and the Prime Minister [will be vaccinated], in order to provide confidence. The Prime Minister will be the last of that group.
