25.01.2022 Today is International Nurses Day . It is a day for reflection. Let this year be no exception to that. As nurses work hard under difficult conditions and uncertain times let us do what we do best - CARE.

22.01.2022 Today was the day, seventy-five years ago, that the nurses learnt that they now to be free. The war was over. Captain Seki announced that hostilities were over and that they could now be friends. They wouldn't be liberated until September.

21.01.2022 This is a great post from staff at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. We certainly know that we can count on them during our time of need. One , Two Three ......

21.01.2022 Today, we lower the flag in honor of those who lost their lives on the Centaur. The War Nurses Memorial Centre, now the Australian Nurses Memorial Centre, had its origins in two tragedies. The first was the sinking of the hospital ship Centaur, which we remember today. On Friday 14th May 1943 the 2/3 Australian hospital ship was forty miles out of Brisbane, heading north toward New Guinea to embark casualties at Port Moresby. She carried a total of 332 persons, including... twelve nurses of the Australian Army Nursing Service. The magazine of the Royal Australian Army Nursing Service, Grey and Scarlet printed "The Centaur was ablaze with floodlights which clearly showed the traditional red crosses of a hospital ship painted on her hull, deck and funnel. Therefore, there was no doubt as to the nature of the target when at 4.10am on the morning of May 14th, a torpedo hit the Centaur just forward of amidship. A blinding blue flash lit up the vessel as the explosion practically ripped her in two and fire from ignited oil raged through the ship. In just over 3 minutes the Centaur had sunk, taking with her most of those on board. Sister Ellen Savage was the only surviving nurse, later awarded the George Medal. Australians were stunned by the news and there was an immediate desire to establish a fitting memorial. This was before the War Nurses Memorial Centre (ANMC) was established, but with the help of the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, more than ten thousand pounds were subscribed to the Centaur War Nurses Memorial Trust. The periodic scholarships awarded by the trust enabled nurses to undertake post graduate education abroad. From the ANMC archives newspaper clipping from May 1953, Sister Mabel Tennant was awarded the sixth Centaur scholarship.

19.01.2022 75th Anniversary of the end of WWll. Today we remember our brave men and women.

19.01.2022 Today we remember Betty Jeffrey who was born in Hobart Tasmania on 14th May 1908. Happy Birthday Betty!

19.01.2022 When Epworth Hospital first opened in 1920, its founders were so determined that Ethel Gray was the best and only matron to lead the care of its patients that they were willing to wait many months to secure her appointment. Born in Carlton in 1876, she was one of the most highly-decorated members of the Australian Army Nursing Service. She was mentioned twice in dispatches, was appointed Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, and was the only Australian ...woman to ever receive the Medaille de la Reconnaissance Française. When the war ended, Ethel took the post as Matron of the newly-opened Epworth Hospital, where she served until her retirement in 1939. She generously donated to the hospital during her time as Matron, and left a major bequest in her will to continue to care for patients after her death. Matron Gray was dearly loved, and is remembered to this day for her tireless championing of both patients and nurses. In 2020, the Centenary year of Epworth HealthCare, the ANMC will collaborate with the Epworth Medical Foundation as sponsor of scholarships to be awarded in memory of Ethel Gray, the first Matron of Epworth Hospital appointed in 1920 after distinguished service in the Australian Army Nursing Service during World War I. Three Epworth HealthCare Centenary Scholarships, each valued at $10,000, will be awarded to registered nurses and midwives to support postgraduate study by coursework or research in 2021. The scholarships will be awarded as follows: One to a nurse or midwife practising in Victoria; One to an indigenous nurse or midwife practising in Victoria; and One to a nurse or midwife practising in regional Victoria. 19.01.2022 From the archives It was Annie Sages suggestion that the formation of auxiliaries could help the Centre financially. The outcome was the establishment in 1955 of two auxiliaries: one to provide financial aid to the Centre known as the Betty Jeffrey Auxiliary and the Vivian Bullwinkel Auxiliary which provided voluntary help. Many of the fund-raising ideas were not sophisticated, but ideas such as the apron appeal, in an era when aprons were more generally worn by Austral...ian women, were very successful. In 1958, Auxiliary members made over 600 aprons which were sent to all members of the Memorial Centre with an appealing verse asking them to measure their waist and send two pennies for every inch. We won't be sending out aprons nor asking for a gold coin for every centimetre of your waist; (although that could be a lucrative fundraiser) As always we would appreciate donations towards the ANMC scholarship fund. 17.01.2022 On the 11th of November we take the time to remember all those who served their country. Lest we forget.

16.01.2022 Such a wonderful piece of history. Such humanity.

15.01.2022 A tribute to Nurses from some well known Australians. Fabulous compilation.

15.01.2022 We are thrilled to have the 'masked'members of the MCO rehearsing at the ANMC.

15.01.2022 The 16th of September marks the 75th Anniversary of liberation of the nurses from the POW camp at Belalau Sumatra. The war ended on the 15th August, and the first they knew would be nine days later with the short speech from Japanese Captain Seki, he announced "War is ended. Americano and English will be here in a few days. We are now all friends." On the 11th of September 1945 Betty Jeffrey wrote in her diary Cheers and more cheers. We have been discovered by two yo...ung Australian paratroops who visited our camp today and came straight past everybody until they landed on the doorstep of our Hut 13. Viv who is usually unmoved and very quiet came rushing in, face positively crimson, and panted, "Australians are here!" They were about five yards behind her. To see that rising sun badge on a beret again! t did us more good than anything we have experienced so far. One fellow said he was 'Bates from Thornbury' and the other was 'Gillam from Perth' and the first thing we noticed, after their youth, was their very white teeth. We made these boys sit on our bali bali and we fired them with questions - Who won the war? Who won the football in Melbourne? Will we be home for the Melbourne Cup? Excerpt from Betty Jeffreys book White Coolies Matron Annie Moriah Sage came to collect the girls with 65 lipsticks in hand, so her girls could look their best. She would be greeted by the surviving 24 nurses. They were wearing what remained of their uniforms they had saved them for this very day. The nurses were taken to Lahat where they boarded a plane bound for Singapore. They recuperated in Singapore prior to departing for home on the AHS Manunda. Lest We Forget See more

14.01.2022 For many of the Prisoner of War internees the war didn't finish today. For the nurses in Belalau, Sumatra they would hear nothing about the end of hostilities until the 24th of August. The photograph is of the stream that divided the women's camp in Belalau ,Sumatra , Indonesia. Lest we forget.

14.01.2022 A beautiful lullaby to finish the day, dedicated to all the Nurses. Thank you @Brigette Heuser Mezzo=soprano.

14.01.2022 Lest we forget her bravery.

14.01.2022 As the end of the financial year approaches, the Australian Nurses Memorial Centre would appreciate your financial support by donating to our Scholarship Fund. 13.01.2022 This letter is from a grateful Premier and Health Minister but I think that all Victorians would agree with them especially in this International Year of The Nurse and Midwife. Thank you.

09.01.2022 Thank you for your scholarship applications which have now closed. Betty Jeffrey and Vivian Bullwinkel would be so proud. Stay safe Stay well

08.01.2022 From the archives - The ANMC as it known today has not changed direction from its humble beginnings as the focus was and remains nurses' education and networking. Today we award scholarships annually to support nurses and midwives studying for postgraduate qualifications. The bricks and mortar have significantly changed, but the heart of the organisation remains the same. Over the years many nurses have received grants to support further education. This year, at least 10 scholarships valued from $5,000 to $15,000 will be awarded for study in 2021. Scholarship applications are open until 31st August. https://australiannursesmemorialcentre.org.au//scholarships

07.01.2022 For Australias POW nurses the war would not end for weeks. When they were finally found they were released and flown to Singapore. Only 24 of the 65 nurses who had fled Singapore in 1942 would be rescued in 1945.

07.01.2022 The Royal Australian Naval Nursing Service has its entire history captured in three (just 3!) pages in the Official History of WW2. https://s3-ap-southeast-2.a...mazonaws.com//docum/5519823.PDF It is worth a read though - just one nurse actually served at sea while others served in New Guinea. While the history says the number in the service 'never exceeded 60', 73 were enlisted for this service in WW2, plus 10 others on a reserve list.

06.01.2022 From the ANMC archives on International Nurses Day an article from May 1959 "Nursing grandest profession" Matron Sage said "Nursing is a service not a business or a trade. Even after all these years, I still think it is the grandest profession any woman can undertake." It's still the grandest profession, that any person can undertake.

06.01.2022 The 2021 Commemorative Service was held on the 18th of April. This year we decided to initiate a collaborative wreath so that organisations as well as individuals may make a donation to the ANMC's scholarship fund in lieu of purchasing flowers to lay at the memorial. The collaborative wreath was laid by Air Commodore Rowan Story on the day. So far the amount raised is in excess of $3000. The ANMC is most appreciative of the many thoughtful donors who gave to the scholarship fund.

06.01.2022 From the Archives - 29th March 1951 "The best job in the world" still rings true today. The ANMC is proud to offer scholarships for nurses and midwives to support postgraduate study in 2021. Applications open 1st July.

05.01.2022 Paradise Road is available on Iview until 29 June. A must watch movie inspired by Betty Jeffreys secret diary White Coolies where Betty recorded the physical and mental battle for survival, the unrelenting obsession with food, the death of friends and of fading hope. A must watch this weekend!

04.01.2022 International Nurses Day

03.01.2022 An amazing group of women who survived such unspeakable hardships together. Truly inspirational.

03.01.2022 Last evening the Australian War Memorial held its Last Post Service in memory of Sister Beth Cuthbertson. She had left Singapore on the SS Vyner Brooke with 64 other Australian nurses. The ship was bombed by the Japanese on the 14th of February 1942. Beth would be one of 22 nurses who were washed ashore on Radji Beach on Bangka Island. On the 16th of February she would later be lined up and walked into the water's edge where the nurses were shot by the Japanese. Of the 22 nurses Vivian Bullwinkel would be the sole survivor. .LEST WE FORGET
