24.01.2022 Time to take a closer look at your supermarket purchases. Theyre not as healthy as you might think. We brush our teeth twice a day. We go for a jog around the neighbourhood. We eat a handful of nuts instead of chomping on a chocolate. We see our doctor whenever we dont feel well.... But are you aware that all your good work could be being undone by sugars lurking in the depths of many of the processed food items you consume? Sugar is everywhere in supermarket staples, even some that might appear to be healthy on the surface, and so this Dental Health Week (3 - 9 August | dentalhealthweek.com.au), were pulling back the sugary curtain to show you whats really in the food you eat, and how this information can help you be healthier all over but especially in your mouth. In other words, we want you to become more sugar savvy. Dental Health Week is an annual event run by the Australian Dental Association which aims to make everyone aware of the key things they need to do to keep their teeth and gums healthy. You might think that a little extra sugar here and there isnt such a big deal, but the odds are that you are taking in far more than you realise. Figures show that the average Australian is consuming 14 teaspoons of sugar a day, a whole lot more than the maximum six teaspoons a day recommended by the World Health Organisation for increased health benefits such as decreasing the risk of tooth decay, which is having a profoundly negative effect on Australias dental health as revealed by Australias Oral Health Tracker (ada.org.au/oralhealthtracker). To help you get within the recommended range, and be healthier into the bargain, this years Dental Health Week is all about showing you what daily sugar consumption level looks like in relation to the food you eat, how to read a food label so you can see whats really in your food, and how sugar can negatively affect your dental health. Beyond that, we want to show how easy it is to keep your teeth and gums healthy by following a few simple tips. Stay tuned as we share those this week!

15.01.2022 COVID -19 UPDATE To our patients, Public safety and the safety of our staff is paramount, we are implementing the following guidelines immediately.... AHPPC recommends adopting the Managing COVID-19 Guidelines published by the Australian Dental Association and implementing a triage system for dental practice. AHPPC recommends that all dental practices implement level 3 restrictions as outlined in ADAs guidance. That is, dentists should only perform dental treatments that do not generate aerosols, or where treatment generating aerosols is limited. All routine examinations and treatments should be deferred. No treatment will be performed on patients who have tested positive to COVID 19, are experiencing flu-like symptoms or have travelled overseas in the past 14 days. Nurture will continue to see patients that fall within the following categories: - Patients in pain - Patients with facial swelling Please feel assured that our practice has been operating under extremely stringent infection control policies and procedures and our staff and patients health is our priority. As the situation is rapidly evolving, we will continue to keep you updated on further restrictions under the Australia Dental Association guidelines. 07.01.2022 ORAL HEALTH DURING PREGNANCY! Did you know that hormonal changes during pregnancy impact your oral health? Hormones will mean your gums are more susceptible to inflammation and infection so regular check-ups and professional cleanings are a must, as is a consistent twice daily routine of brushing with fluoridated toothpaste and once-a-day flossing. You may find that your gums are more swollen and sensitive during pregnancy; they might bleed and can be quite painful to brush ...and floss. This is known as pregnancy gingivitis and is a result of changes in hormones that make gums more sensitive to the bacteria found in plaque. Some women experience unusual food cravings during pregnancy. Succumbing to these cravings will happen now and then, so it is important to be mindful that a regular desire for sugary snacks may increase your risk of tooth decay. If nothing but sweetness will satisfy your craving, try to choose healthier options such as fresh fruits with natural or Greek yoghurt. Morning sickness is beyond your control but its important you know that vomit is extremely acidic and can cause irreversible damage to your teeth, known as dental erosion. This makes your teeth more susceptible to sensitivity and can accelerate decay. No matter how much you might want to, dont brush your teeth for at least one hour after vomiting. It might seem like a good idea to delay dental treatment while you are pregnant because of a perceived risk to your baby. However, routine and urgent dental procedures can be undertaken throughout your pregnancy and you should be seeing your dentist on a regular basis. Having a healthy mouth before you plan to become pregnant is the best way to continue easy dental visits through your pregnancy. Having a healthy mouth is also linked to your child having good oral health!!
