24.01.2022 Name the veg Straight from a friends garden. I remember eating these as a kid: steamed with lashings of salt, pepper & butter ... Now I love them in stir fries with garlic, ginger, chilli, sesame oil, soy sauce. Great as a side dish with chopped Choy sum (stem cooked first and the leaves wilted). I also like stewed with apples & cinnamon over porridge or with yoghurt. They made a great plant based pasta substitute like a crunchier zoodle. They can be eaten raw in salad like a jicama slaw substitute, braised, pureed, curried, fried, scalloped, sautéed or pickled. They are crisp and have a cucumber come zucchini apple vibe. They are rich in polyphenols and the cartonoids lutein & beta-carotene) and a good source of amino acids including valine (0.99 mg/g protein), leucine (1.21 mg/g protein), isoleucine (0.70 mg/g protein), phenylalanine (0.75 mg/g protein), threonine (0.64 mg/g protein), lysine (0.42 mg/g protein), arginine (0.54 mg/g protein) and histidine (0.23 mg/g protein). Nutritionally they contribute 6% fibre, 12% vitamin C, 5% B6, 3% magnesium, 3% potassium & 1% calcium to your daily nutrient values. Flavonoids present in this vegetable may have a positive effect on cardiovascular health, and have anti inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It has also been used as an ingredient in cosmetics such as moisturizers, cleansers, sun lotions, toothpastes, mouthwashes, shaving creams, deodorants and shampoos. Ref Vieira et. al. 2018

23.01.2022 Came across this while clearing out the bookshelf. A mix of traditional ’nature cure’ principles mixed with outdated health advice but... some great recipes for incorporating more f&v into your day. They were ahead of the times (quinoa, almond milk, cauliflower spread to name a few) - and minus the gluten + the sprouts they aren't that far removed from some current health bestsellers. ... Might have been one of the first ’diets’ I ever did Now that I've outed myself...what was your first diet? Come on, don’t be shy :)

22.01.2022 Leftover lentil dahl & veg for lunch. Fuel for a shuffly jog on a sunny day. Taking the wins where I can at the moment. Are you ok?... Stay well

22.01.2022 Since I can’t go home to Adelaide to visit the restaurant I’m really looking forward to trying the recipes in Parwana the cookbook this weekend. Seems very much of the Ottolenghi middle eastern vibe if you’re into that with wonderful stories of Afghanistan’s history & culture.

20.01.2022 Now that I'm a bonafide veggie gardener (defined as someone who grows things you can eat) , I'm actually thinking about 'spring planting'. The iso excitement is palpable. I can see why Costa Georgiadis Official is always so pumped now A tomato plant is a given. And basil. What else would grow in a metre square patch?

20.01.2022 One persistent nested complaint about Naturopathy is lack of evidence (lack of evidence is not proof of lack of efficacy) in therapies used. And ‘it’s no better than placebo’. Thankfully we are building a better research base, and this is being conducted by local researchers so we can better apply to Australian health concerns. I've previously posted about the dangers of overdosing Acetaminophen/paracetamol, the active in many common OTC pain medicines. ... It’s been on the market around 50 years and its exact mechanism of action is still unclear. It was interesting to read this morning ‘Paracetamol medication *may be no better than a placebo in most common pain conditions*, according to the largest review of the evidence to support its use. Researchers from the University of Sydney looked at systemic reviews which evaluated the trial data for paracetamol for pain relief in 44 conditions and found that it was only proved to be effective in knee and hip osteoarthritis, craniotomy, tension headache and perineal pain after childbirth. In osteoarthritic conditions, the effect was so small that it was questionable whether it had a clinical benefit’. We’re saying to people that opioids are harmful so you need to think of something less harmful, so they’re heading back to paracetamol and we don’t know if it works or not, Professor Maher said. That’s a problem. Pain management is a vitally important part of healthcare. Natural supplements available to naturopaths in Australia do not have the acute benefits of pharmaceuticals (and I think most of us have been very thankful for medical analgesia at some point in our lives) but they may help with addressing the underlying cause/s. This might lessen the reliance on pain killers and begin to improve quality of life. Caution needs to be taken with poly pharmacy and interactions between certain medications & natural medicines. Don't assume because it's ‘natural’ it's benign. Chat to your naturopath/nutritionist/pharmacist/doctor/health professional about everything you are taking. https://www.smh.com.au//paracetamol-may-be-no-better-than-

17.01.2022 I love the amazing colours potatoes come in (if you seek them out) These are (I think!) Toolangi Delight, Cranberry Red & Purple Sapphire from @spudsistersofficial All destined for air fryer / chips tonight. Each are slightly different textures- some waxier, others drier so it's going to be interesting to see how they taste as

16.01.2022 I can *almost* accept an interstate, pandemic AFL grand final (that my team isn't in :P) but one at night just doesn't seem right. Am I right?! I'm distracting myself from that with study. And this fascinating old This American Life podcast on acetaminophen/paracetamol toxicity and its narrow safety margins was part of that distraction.... We know the adverse health risks of significant overdosage of this drug but hepatotoxicity may occur at doses within the therapeutic range. Serious problems may result in people with polymorphisms in the genes coding for one or more of the key detoxification enzymes. Thankfully many of these genes can be tested for now but polypharmacy, particularly in the elderly, is prevalent. It's comforting many have a great local pharmacist in their healthcare team but there has been an increase in paracetamol poisonings, and resulting liver damage in Australia over the past decade with paracetamol being the leading cause of acute liver failure in the Western world. https://www.news.com.au///b6b69b9a5e0d9a11c5b86fcbb5477eb4 Before you think I'm all anti pharmaceuticals - I'm not, likewise, there are a few natural supplements I tend to avoid prescribing or use at a low dose for limited periods. Some over the counter herb formulations have been found to be hepatotoxic in some people but this is generally at significant overdosage or more commonly, when self-prescribed. I love it when people bring up the gaps in our knowledge of particular herbs or low dose supplements which may have a long tradition of use and high safety profile. Yep, we do need more of our talented natural medicine researchers working on fleshing out the details of how our herbs work. Or don't. But we still don't know the complete mechanism of action of paracetamol and this doesn't stop it being one of the most consumed pharmaceutical drugs in the world. Food for thought. https://www.thisamericanlife.org/505/use-only-as-directedp

14.01.2022 Parma/Parmie/Parmy? It's Monday, sun's shining and I've been thinking about the great things we do in Melbourne. Of which one is Chicken Parmigiana. No ham. Chips on the side. Crisp green salad. ... I was corrected in my 'Parma' reverie though by someone from Geelong (heck they can probably still dine in down there so power to them) who said 'Parmie' It has always been 'Parma', surely? Some googling found this great (warning: swears) article on the Parma/Parmie debate. I'm open to new evidence. And linguistically ParmIE does make sense, it's something I can take on board. Ish Where you are on the parma/parmie/parmy divide? The best in Melbourne btw - Carosello! Insanely good. Edit, link actually attached now. In my parma excitement, I forgot. https://newmatilda.com//great-australian-debate-chicken-p/

14.01.2022 A friend shared this (note: swears) and what resonated about our amazing city and people who live in it was: "The real story here is the superhuman humanity, the extraordinary ordinariness, and just how remarkable the otherwise unremarkable amongst us are being. In reality a reality we’re all seeing with our own eyes we’re a city of 5 million extremely ordinary, extremely worn-out people, suffering a trauma people not here will never understand" Keep on keeping on Melbour...ne. https://theshot.net.au//melbourne-is-not-a-city-in-revol/"

12.01.2022 Has anyone else eaten their fill of Easter eggs ... already : small chocolate easter eggs in muffin liner Merve Sehirli Nasir on Unsplash

12.01.2022 Lentils: Love ’em or loath ’em? There's something really nourishing about lentil dahl. The small red lentils are the quickest but the others only really require a bit of a soak/longer cooking time. They are rich in fibre and provide food for your gut microbiome too. ... You can dial-up or down the spiciness, add plain water, stock, coconut milk, add extra veg, tomato paste/sun dried tomatoes & green leafies at the end. Serve with rice, quinoa or flat bread, yoghurt, pickles, salad. Pretty easy & cheap feast which is great on this gloomy Melbourne day.

11.01.2022 Feeling very thankful on Anzac day. Time to pause and consider the great sacrifices of the Diggers which have allowed us to continue our wonderful Aussie way of life. And to pay our respects to those that returned, and the current serving ADF members. And for me this day is completed with a great Anzac biscuit (or 3) while watching Collingwood play Essendon. Go Pies. ... Image: poppy with green trees and blue sky in the back ground. With thanks to Beasty on Unsplash.

11.01.2022 What a weekend! I hope you have had a great one?! I took advantage of the wonderful sun here and weeded the garden and washed sheets and towels and all that fun stuff! And pressed go on my online shopping cart I admit I shut my eyes when I saw the bill . ... It's still probably cheaper than the smaller shops I've been doing, I have a cohesive plan for the week and a restocked pantry. I couldn't be more adult today if I tried Might need a walk and an ice cream now :P Stay well

09.01.2022 Wishing all the Dad’s out there a super awesome day (Melbourne has turned on the sun for you!). May you all get great new socks ;) Props also to the sole parents who carry the parenting load, the step Dads and those wonderful blokes who provide that Dad vibe to others who need it, and thinking of those whose Dads either aren't with us or you have a complicated relationship Stay well

09.01.2022 Wow, all the *feels* Check out the reverse word on this quick link here. Love = Heal.... https://www.instagram.com/p/CO77l-lNLqP/

07.01.2022 Iso pop quiz: are you a swivel peeler (left) or Y peeler (right) fan? Straight up I can tell you I *hate* one of these, with a passion. It takes a tedious yet meditative task and stuffs it (harsher words than that are used when it's the only peeler to be found )... Team Swivel or Team Y? Or something else?

06.01.2022 I believe there is a layer of hell called 'first aid refresher'. Am I right? As useful a skill as it is, the prework is not my ideal weekend but doing the F2F session with a bunch of other naturopath's sounds fun and a great way to turn drudgery into something to look forward to But while there is blue sky here in Melbourne on what is predicted to be a gloomy weekend I'm pounding the pavement.... Oh Saturday mornings, you're the best!

05.01.2022 My #covidart collection is growing. Because, home & looking at the walls This is ’Nothing Lasts’ from Felicity Chiao. She has also described it as ’intrusive thoughts’ which gave it an extra nuance at this time. It's a reasonably cheap print on Society 6. ... Art & aesthetic experience may improve mood and overall wellbeing and here's a nice article on some reasons why https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6458291/

05.01.2022 JOMO: As I reflected on *not* waking up in Milan for a millisecond this morning (and appreciating that the sound of steady rain is so transportive you can really close your eyes and imagine being anywhere) into my inbox popped a link to an article which segued into JOMO - the joy of missing out. Yes, I missed using that hashtag yesterday. ... It's a good read. I wonder if identifying your values, setting goals & living a purposeful existence might also be useful at drowning out the ‘noise’ and focusing on what you need. Let you know when I figure that out or vice versa Link here: https://nesslabs.com/jomo

04.01.2022 Here’s hoping we in Vic receive some good news today from the Premier. I've a sense we won't be overly thrilled so I'm thinking about doing some baking later... and the ideas range from decadent melting moments through to healthy oat slice depending on how much TLC we need How is everyone travelling!? ... This past fortnight I've done a Thyrve gut test and I'm half excited half trepidatious to see how the coronadiet has impacted on my gut bugs. I'm also keen to see how Thyrve’s testing panel compares to other tests. it's certainly cheaper than many available here but the support available with local tests like Microba is A1. I've watched David Attenborough’s A Life on our Planet like many other people. I've been big proponent of the modified Mediterranean diet for a while and now I'm seeking out more regenerative agriculture products to lessen my impact. It's expensive but hopefully offset by consuming less & enjoying more. Let you know when my first delivery arrives. I’m scrambling to finish a fascinating & insanely in-depth nutrigenomics (the study of the effects of food and food constituents on gene expression) course. I love that it's independent of any companies test so that I can continue to review raw data v being shackled to one test. Manuka is in a teach out mode pract friends so unfortunately not available in this in depth mode anymore I've been gifted a newer iWatch (thank you so much friends!) and it's sheer lightness (aluminium v stainless steel) and longer battery time has me recording more workouts & getting back on the I’ve been listening to Tame Impala’s new album & it's so effortless cool it's easy imaging I'm in a rooftop bar, sans mask (oh it’s a glorious feeling - give it a go!) Enjoy your Sunday - no matter what

04.01.2022 I should be taking a ride on a big jet plane bound for Italy today, where I was going to show my daughter some of my favourite places and discover some new ones. Working from home and not doing the almost 2-hour commute means I have probably spent more time with her in the past 6 months than the prior 6 years. Let's be real, single parenting, homeschooling & WFH is not all sunshine & unicorns. ... And yet I have zero FOMO of this holiday. I'm happier than a clam (or will be when the refund is finally processed ) Because I'm so incredibly grateful of the time we have had together over the past six months. To me, time is a gift. And I'm really mindful of not getting what I thought I wanted but actually experiencing something much better, at home. I know many people are struggling with the extension of quarantine and are at their wits end. We all have different self care strategies - mine is taking advantage of early morning quietness - I hope you’re able to dip into them over the weekend. Stay well

02.01.2022 Is it just me Melbourne or does anyone else have their happy tunes playing tonight? I’ll still be working from home but the ability to move around, grab a meal and go to a few shops in a covid safe way is https://open.spotify.com/track/60nZcImufyMA1MKQY3dcCH
