25.01.2022 Dietary forms of iron include haem (from an animal source) and non-haem (from a plant based source such as spinach). The body absorbs haem iron more efficiently, however, there are ways of maximising non-haem iron sources. Some of the ways include: Having a source of Vitamin C with the plant based iron (such as lemon juice, orange, red capsicum, strawberries).... Removing any hidden inhibitors from your meal (such as caffeine containing beverages, oxalates or phytates). Try sprouting some seeds before consuming. 24.01.2022 The average Australian woman can expect to have approximately 30 years of regular menstruation... this results in around 360-400 periods over her entire lifetime. Compare this with our ancestral forebears who only had access to unreliable birth control at best, resulting in an ongoing cycle of pregnancy and breast-feeding. As such, these women had an average of only 40 periods throughout their lifetime. (Trickey, 2003). You may be wondering where the influx of issues with w...omen's reproductive and hormonal health have come from. There are many potential contributing and sustaining factors involved. We, at Nurture Point, have plenty of resources and information to share. 23.01.2022 The word 'fertility' for a woman can act a euphemism for an abundance of good health. For those who are aware of how to track their menstrual cycle, they can often see whether they have ovulated throughout the month. Things like stress, under-eating (which becomes a stress to the body), lack of sleep or changes in medications can all be found to influence a woman's menstrual cycle and fertility rates. At Nurture Point we aim to build better body literacy for women to give t...hem the confidence of knowing when something is off, or needs support. If you would like more information about how to track your menstrual cycle and understand more about ovulation check out our recent blog "Ovulation & Your Peak Fertile Window: How To Tell If You’re Ovulating" (our link is in the bio section under linkt.ree/NurturePoint). 22.01.2022 It's only Monday, keep going! #womenshealth

22.01.2022 Sleep . I used to wake up of a Monday morning planning what time I'd go to bed that night. I felt rotten until about 10am when I drank 2 double shot flat whites because I just wanted some energy to face the day. But then I'd come home of an evening and think "Yes! I've been tired all day, I'm really looking forward to getting some good, solid sleep!" And then something interesting would happen. I'd get distracted, I'd check out my phone, get excited about what else was happe...Continue reading

19.01.2022 It is a common experience for some young girls to start taking hormonal contraception early on in their reproductive life to "normalise" their period. This has resulted in many of our clients then preparing themselves to withdraw from hormonal contraception with mixed feelings. They may start experiencing symptoms ranging from mild anxiety, acne, or the resurrection of some more serious symptoms like severe pain, heavy periods, clotting, or flooding. Sometimes their periods ...do not return whatsoever. It is important to be aware that hormonal contraception does not normalise a rogue period. Hormonal contraception stops the body from having a biologically functional period. What you will experience when you take the sugar pills, for example, is called a withdrawal bleed. It is not a period. The difference may seem to be an issue of semantics for many, but it is an important distinction to make for several reasons. 18.01.2022 Ovulation, and having a regular menstrual cycle is not just about baby making. Ovulation, and the delicate hormonal cascade which supports ovulation is required for: Bone Health Mental and emotional health... Cardiovascular health Immune function Having healthy cycles is more than just about procreation, it has systemic benefits for a woman. Just like testosterone isn't just about fertilising eggs and clearly has many other benefits, women also need their own endogenous supply of oestrogen, progesterone and other sex hormones. 17.01.2022 For those interested in women's health.

17.01.2022 If you have been told this, unfortunately you may be labouring under a common misconception. Wink, wink - let's justify a method of contraception and call it something else. Being on hormonal contraception does not regulate periods. It puts them on hold until you stop taking the drug. What you may experience on hormonal contraception is a withdrawal bleed (which is completely different!). The distinction between the two processes is important. Hormonal contraception generally... stops ovulation (that's how it works to prevent pregnancy). So the belief that it would regulate how your hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis sends appropriate signalling for regulating a monthly cycle can be misconstrued. If you found this helpful please share. #womenshealth #pmsing #periodpains #endometriosis #pcos

15.01.2022 A great diet can come undone if our body cannot absorb the nutrients we are eating. Women, in particular, can be vulnerable to the effects of low nutrient absorption. A great example of this is when we're eating an appropriate amount of protein (which is fantastic) - but then finding it difficult to absorb the iron that is bound to that protein. Challenges with iron storage (ferritin) can be influenced by gut integrity. How can this be optimised? To name just a few things: ... eating bitter foods (broccoli, dandelion, rocket keeping good gut acid (by taking apple cider vinegar) eating mindfully (taking small bites, chewing slowly) minimising stress and building good body awareness by monitoring gut symptoms. What sort of symptoms can we be on the look-out for? Reflux, heartburn, discomfort, bloating, brain fog post meal and food sensitivities.. to name just a few! We are more aware of how important gut function is to overall health. By making these small and achievable changes nutrient absorption can be maximised. If you, or anyone you know could do with another reminder of how to optimise your gut health please share this post or book in your free 15 minute discovery call at https://app.simpleclinic.net/public/diary/index/pkr

15.01.2022 Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a systemic disorder which features diverse symptoms and drivers. It is believed that about one in seven women are potentially impacted. Accurately diagnosing the condition can prove challenging and a definitive criteria for classification is a contentious issue. There can be four general types of PCOS (such as insulin-resistant PCOS, inflammatory PCOS, pill-induced PCOS and hidden-cause PCOS). While evidence has not clearly linked envi...ronmental toxins with increased risk, studies have found significantly higher levels of perfluorinated compounds, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), bisphenol A (BPA), pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons amongst women with PCOS compared with women who don’t. Interestingly, there is evidence which links maternal exposure to BPAs with PCOS development in the daughters of these women. https://doi.org/10.3109/09513590.2013.871517 If you find this information interesting or you think a friend would benefit from knowing more, we would be thrilled if you shared this post, tagged a friend or followed our socials. 14.01.2022 We get a lot of mixed messages as women in the modern era. One of the most consistent messages, however, is that in order to be considered worthy or lovable, we must look our best at all times. 11.01.2022 It's tough to know how much sunshine is good for you. There is a lot of information out there and it can be daunting to find a consistent message that is right for you. Every person has a unique Vitamin D requirement that is dependent on their baseline levels, skin tone, immune function, weight, genetic predisposition, time of year and geographic location. As a general rule of thumb it's a good idea to check the ultra violet (UV) index before you venture out. So how do you do... that? Details on how to download the Sunsmart app for Apple and Android to follow. Here are a few quick tips to keep in mind when choosing to slip, slop, slap or free-range: If you have a genetic predisposition towards skin cancer development take specialised advice from your dermatologist or GP. People with very dark skin tones may need up to six times more exposure to UV radiation to produce as much Vitamin D as someone with fair skin. During Summer avoid peak UV times during the middle of the day (optimally aim for a maximum of 10 minutes worth of exposure before 9am or after 4pm) when the UV index is UNDER 3. At other times of the year in places like Melbourne and Hobart from April through to September, or Sydney and Adelaide in June and July, you may need a maximum of 10 minutes exposure in PEAK UV times (ie 10am to 3pm) to synthesis enough Vitamin D. 11.01.2022 Did you know that food can be a source of Vitamin D? Fat-containing animal foods such as kidneys, egg yolks, cod liver oil, liver and fatty fish such as mackerel, herring, salmon & sardines. Full-fat dairy foods such as cream, full-fat milk and butter. 11.01.2022 A common blood test used to assess fertility rates because it may identify egg reserve, there are few things to bear in mind with using it as a diagnostic measure: Any testing for fertility will be influenced by the preceding 3 month period (so illness, infection or changes in medication, can all impact the results). It cannot be used to diagnose conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). To diagnose PCOS further hormones need to be tested (like androgens and ...oestrogen). While it's fairly stable through the menstrual cycle, when taking the contraceptive pill it can be reduced by between 30% and 40%. It's best taken on day two or three of a new cycle. AMH is just telling us the pre-antral follicle count in a woman. While this may give us a snapshot of the count, it cannot be used to identify egg quality or ovarian function. Results are best taken in context with other signs and symptoms. I love helping reclaim their hormonal health! 11.01.2022 #freakyfriday While we are coming out of winter and into spring it may be time to review our vitamin D status. Vitamin D is a crucial hormone that is involved, at a minimum, in immune, bone, mental and reproductive health. At Nurture Point we appreciate that not everyone has the luxury of sun exposure without facing significant risks. Being an Australian based company we recognise that even we learned the value of slip, slop and slap early in our development. In turn this has... left us at risk of low vitamin D status. When you cover up (which is something we do recommend you do during peak UVB times) with sunscreen, sunglasses and skin covering fabrics, you will not be able to synthesis Vitamin D. One of the most influential musicians in history was the legendary Bob Marley. Interestingly enough Bob passed from a rare form of melanoma, which was in part linked with a genetic predisposition. Even the people who we think are not at risk, still need to be protective of their health and wellbeing. If you found this useful please feel free to share.

09.01.2022 #tuesdaytips Accurate absorption rates of vitamin D via supplementation is still being explored academically and rates vary widely. Science is beginning to appreciate that, as a fat based hormone, supplementation can be maximised by taking the supplement immediately prior to a fat-containing meal. If you are taking your supplements away from food you may not be getting the most out of the money you have spent. If you know of someone who would benefit from this please feel f...ree to share. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25441954/

09.01.2022 Have Fun with Fungi! As a child I used to pick the mushrooms off my pizza because they tasted funny. Thankfully that was then and this is now Mushrooms have been found to be able to synthesis nutritionally substantial amounts of Vitamin D precursors when exposed to sunlight. When eaten, our bodies can convert these Vitamin D precursors to an active form and utilise for bone cognitive, motor-skill, hormonal and immune health. Sunday sustenance tips for today:... Expose any type of edible mushrooms for approximately 10-15 minutes before eating for best results. This process is best done with fresh mushrooms. As the mushroom ages the quantity of Vitamin D reduces rapidly. For optimal absorption refrain from cooking the mushrooms as this can also reduce the amount of absorbable Vitamin D. UV exposure does not denature the mushroom proteins which means that it's still an ideal alternative for vegetarians and vegans. This is important when we think that our usual food sources of Vitamin D include things like oily fish and whole dairy, which may not work for vegetarians and vegans either. What sort of symptoms can we be on the look-out for to know we may need a Vitamin D boost? Slow motor reflexes, low mood, Seasonal Affective Disorder and recurrent cold and flu symptoms... to name just a few! We are more aware of how undervalued our fungi friends are to overall health. By following these small and achievable steps we can do the best for our bodies. If you, or anyone you know could do with another reminder of how to optimise your gut health please share this post or book in your free 15 minute discovery call at https://app.simpleclinic.net/public/diary/index/pkr #womenshealth #pcosaustralia #acneaustralia #pmsing #bodypositive #itsallconnected #letstalkaboutit #womenoftoday#womenshormones #balancinghormones #postpillbreakouts #empoweredwomen #nutritiondeficiency #nourishyourbody #selfcareisnotaluxury #selfcareisnotselfish #empoweringwomentoreclaimtheirhealth https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6213178/

08.01.2022 Considering how much I love food eating for two just makes so much sense! It might surprise you to find out that you are more microbe than you are human. The ratio is roughly about 10 to 1. Why we want to keep these guys happy is that these microbes can help or hinder our health by the types of products they make. If we keep feeding less desirable microbes they just end up making more microbe-babies. There is a tipping point at which they start crowding out the ideal or desi...rable microbes. While we might eat for taste to please our own personal 'buds, spare a thought for the microbes who live in and on us. They're main fuel source happens to be the fibres in our food. If you eat a Standard Australian Diet (SAD for short ) which is low in fibre, you'll be starving out the desirable microbes and impacting their ability to keep you healthy. SO! It may be the unsexiest superfood on the market BUT eating a high fibre diet is going to tip the scales in your favour by feeding desirable microbes. Follow these quick tidbits to keep you on track: Aim for at least 28-30g of fibre EVERY day (a very large pear can have up to 10g of fibre while 1/2 cup cooked rice noodles only has about 0.90g) Source the majority from fresh, unprocessed fruits and vegetables Eat vegetables at every meal (it's not just for dinner alone!) Cut down on sugar (because this is the primary fuel source for those undesirable microbes) If you want more 1 on 1 coaching we would be thrilled if you link back to our bio to book in your free 15 minute discovery call. 08.01.2022 Vitamin D absorption and skin tone are linked. The deeper the pigment (or melanin), the more difficult it will be to absorb optimal levels of ultra violet radiation through the skin for Vitamin D synthesis . Now that we travel extensively across the globe we are in environments which may be different to what we are genetically prepared for . For the English-rose skin type staying out in the wintry sun of the United Kingdom, for example, may be an ideal match for synthesi...sing the appropriate Vitamin D levels within shorter time intervals where the UVB levels are moderate. Once an individual with that skin type then relocates to a much hotter, harsher climate with a much higher UVB rating (for example, Australia), it may be more difficult to gain optimal sun exposure while still respecting the risks associated with excessive UV exposure such as sunburn and cancer risk. 08.01.2022 In my humble opinion people put up with sh!t for far too long! If it's bothering you, or you've always wondered whether it's normal? Ask the question. Naturopaths & Nutritionists have been talking about the importance of good gut function for longer than people have wanted to hear. There's a reason . The gut is the engine room of the body . So if you're experiencing:... Excess flatulence Reflux or heart burn Discomfort before during or after a meal Problems digesting your foods or pain afterwards Insomnia Hormonal dysfunction Fatigue Problems with iron storage An inability to handle big, fatty or greasy foods Bloating I'm hear to say that, while it may have been normalised if ignored for a long time, it's not normal and there are things which you can do about it, like: Digestive enzymes (helps break down nutrients) Bitters (like bitter green salads - rocket, radicchio, Brussels sprouts, sauerkraut or apple cider vinegar) stimulates the stomach to get ready for food by making stomach acid. Stomach acid is actually there for a reason - it breaks down proteins. If you have low stomach acid it can be fixed. Antacids are not the always the best solution and might just be making things worse Slowing down as you eat Moderating alcohol intake Avoiding coffee and other stimulants on an empty stomach By following these small, achievable steps you can help stoke the engine room back into operation. 08.01.2022 Stress doesn't necessarily cause acne but it can exacerbate a pre-existing issue with it. That is because cortisol (one of our key stress hormones) delays wound repair by its suppression of the immune system. When we are flooded with stress it can also upregulate sweat production by engaging in our sympathetic nervous state. Acne has affected up to 85% of adults throughout their lifetimes and usually appears on the face, back (aka backne), or even your neck (aka lymphacne) a...nd shoulders. Everyone's favourite, right? As teenagers develop, they have been known to utilise hormonal birth control as a means of 'treating' their acne. This works by suppressing sebum production but it can have unexpected and undesired consequences later down the line. We are putting together some great resources on skin and hormonal health this month and we are excited at the prospect of spending more time with you. More news to follow! 07.01.2022 In honour of our Vitamin D Series this month we thought we would give you a few top tips that are often missed about Vitamin D: Approximately only HALF of the Vitamin D in food is absorbed Approximately 5% of your daily Vitamin D requirements come from food.... Farmed fish may only contain 25% of the Vitamin D levels found in wild-caught fish because of artificial feeding. Low-fat dairy foods are a less than ideal food source. If you found this helpful please share it. To book in your free Discovery Call please follow the links in the bio!

07.01.2022 Sunscreen prevents sunburn by blocking UVB light. As a result, using sunscreen lowers Vitamin D synthesis. In order to convert Vitamin D the skin needs to be 'bare' to the sun. Glass filters out the UVB rays and therefore blocks the capacity to make Vitamin D. Many people work indoors, have listening to the 'slip, slop, slap' message, are institutionalised or wear protective clothing or attire that covers their skin and prevents them from making Vitamin D. Considering approx...imately 95% of your daily requirement is sourced from skin exposure (and only 5% from dietary intake) it can become increasingly challenging to get the optimal Vitamin D levels. If you found this tip helpful please share. If you would like to book in your free 15 Discovery Call please follow the link in the bio.

07.01.2022 This is a bit of poetic license in depicting how I see mothers of young teenage girls race to hormonal birth control. They want a way to 'regulate' their teens monthly cycles. While this may seem like an easy fix, sometimes it can bring a whole raft of other considerations which are best discussed with a qualified practitioner who focuses on preserving women's fertility. Placing a young woman on hormonal contraception too early may inadvertently delay future fertility. Take... heart, there are plenty of ways of regulating a teenage girl back to feeling better. Please share this with someone else who could find this helpful. www.nurturepoint.net #womenshealth #pmspain #ilostmyperiod #fertilitytrends

05.01.2022 Keeping things separate... Things like calcium, oxalates, phytates & tannins can interfere with iron absorption and storage capacity. Ways of optimising absorption include:... Steaming your greens to reduce the oxalates (which are considered anti-nutrients). Pre-soaking nuts and seeds to reduce oxalates & phytates in filtered water and rinsing before eating. Separating any calcium supplementation from iron containing foods or supplements. Sprouting some seeds to maximise nutrient absorption and bioavailability Waiting an hour before and after supplementation or eating, before we have caffeine containing beverages. For our ladies who are interested in fertility and conception it's important to remember that our iron status will directly impact foetal development. For our ladies who are prone to heavy periods, low iron can make this worse. For quick ways on how to rebuild your iron status, feel free to go to our Freebies section (www.nurturepoint.net/freebies) or follow the linkt.ree/NurturePoint link in our bio. #womenshealth #pcosaustralia #acneaustralia #pmsing #periodproblems #periodproblem #menstruation #bodypositive #itsallconnected #periodpositive #letstalkaboutit #womenoftoday #periodleave #postpillacne #womenshormones #balancinghormones #postpillbreakouts #empoweredwomen #nutritiondeficiency #nourishyourbody #selfcareisnotaluxury #selfcareisnotselfish #empoweringwomentoreclaimtheirhealth

04.01.2022 Guess what your cells don't have? They don't have eyes! Your cells can't see what's going on until they receive instruction from someone higher on the food chain about what to do or what to expect. Part of this messaging system includes hormones - it's the way our brain communicates to the furthest corners of our bodies. Take for instance eating - our bodies are primed to have two dominant states (sympathetic nervous and para-sympathetic nervous states). The process of e...ating is ideally done when the para-sympathetic nervous system is in gear. It's the division that is supposed to be in charge when you are in your rest, romance and digest phase . However... When we don't prime our bodies to prepare for food by calming down and focusing on what we are doing, the body (and particularly the gut), may not be ready or aware of what's supposed to be happening. When we are eating over the sink, staring into the rabbit hole that is our mobile phone, or scarfing down something quickly over our keyboards - our bodies are not engaged in the para-sympathetic nervous state. If you are that person who can do a thousand things simultaneously and still feel 100% relaxed GOOD FOR YOU. This update is not for you. It's for the rest of us who then feel bloated, have reflux, discomfort, brain fog, lethargy or have problems with the back end of that process . So today's top tips for better digestion and chemical messaging throughout the body: Turn off your blue-light device (mobile, laptop, tablet, PC). Put away any other tasks. Sit down to eat. Look at your food and engage all of your senses (this will help prime your body in the para-sympathetic nervous state). Take a full half an hour (more if you can) and chew each bite before swallowing. Put down the utensils between bites. Listen for the cues your body is sending you (hunger, satiety). By following simple steps you may improve the nutrients your body absorbs and utilises to help get you through your day. 04.01.2022 We're excited to release some of our free resources! Have you ever considered that it may not just be something you have to bottle up or disguise with synthetic drugs? Curious to know what type you may be experiencing or your teenage daughter may be experiencing? I have found more and more in clinical experience that the initial symptoms teens experienced in their first 5-10 years of their reproductive health are not addressed until much later in life when they are preparing... for pregnancy. Often these symptoms would have been easier and cheaper to address much earlier on! And sometimes the root cause of the issues impacted other areas of their life such as the connection between PCOS and insulin resistance and increased type II diabetes risk. Take our free fun test to find out which type of PMS you may be experiencing and download an information pack loaded with valuable and easy to follow information about what you can do about it. Did you know that there are five different types with different drivers and nutrients you can use to support your symptoms? Wouldn't it be great to get those all of those years back and enjoy being a woman?! Please take the test and share it with your girlfriends! 03.01.2022 Low Vitamin D status is associated with low mood. Coming out of winter and isolation may have come at a cost to our Vitamin D stores. Our body uses Vitamin D as a hormone which is why it can impact brain function, muscle reflexes and mood (including seasonal affective disorder, PMS, insomnia, anxiety and depression). Vitamin D also plays a role in calcium balance which impacts muscle and nerve function. Evidence is beginning to emerge showing Vitamin D also impacts our capaci...ty to make decisions, concentrate, our physical reaction times and our memory. So the next time you walk into a room and forget why you went in there, you might want to have your reserves checked . If you found this helpful please share. 03.01.2022 A poignant reminder of the important things to look forward to..

01.01.2022 I remember getting to the top of a moderately sized hill, struggling to catch my breath. Could I have been just 'unfit'? Maybe... But I also know that as an endo lady I err on the side of lower iron status. In fact, even at my fittest my iron was at it's lowest and my fatigue and anxiety were peaking. I need to be on the ball with my work so I don't ignore where my iron is at any one time. Iron plays a vital role in neuronal processes such as myelination, synaptogenesis, beha...viour and synaptic plasticity. Iron deficiency has been found to alter parts of the brain, including the hippocampus, striatum, amygdale and prefrontal cortex. This can result in cognitive deficits leading to memory and learning issues. (Osieki, 2010).
