22.01.2022 #TuesdayTip #LetItSit Who doesn’t love to sit and rest and put your feet up? I know I do. It’s time to gather my thoughts, catch my breath and ponder. Did you know that your words love to sit and rest too?... I know ... you think I’m crazy but hear me out. When you walk away and let your words sit, your brain has a rest and focuses on other matters (think coffee and chocolate). This little break for your brain means when you go back to the screen, your words will appear different, or clearer, or even worse. It also means you can read your words with fresh eyes and a fresh thought process. The ‘freshness’ may pick up a typo or grammar error or give you a new idea for a different word to use or an alternative way to write your text. In fact, I’ve just let this post sit and I’ve come back and found an errant word, incorrect comma placement and added a few more words. 21.01.2022 You know the moment when you feel like you can whip up a business card using an online template because it won't take too long and you kind of know what you want and the template is easy to use? Well, this morning I was doing just that. I had the foundation: logo, brand colours, and the photos ready to go. Next minute - AKA three hours - I was frustrated, overwhelmed and promptly closed the tab and contacted a professional whose job it is to do just this.... I should have outsourced this in the first place as I know design it's not my strong point. In these three hours, I could've been doing something more productive in my business: planning my social media content, networking with potential clients, and my nurturing current clients, or even working on one of my manuscripts. But instead, the morning slipped away from me, and I achieved nothing. Does this sound like you? Are you frustrated by how much time you waste on something an expert could do quicker? 20.01.2022 #TuesdayTip #RemoveDoubleSpaces A few weeks ago posted about no longer using a double space after a full stop. Remember: No more tap tap!... Here is a quick way to find and replace them in your Word document, which is very useful for manuscripts and longer text. 1. Click anywhere inside the document (or select a portion of the document) and press CTRL+H (or the ‘Replace’ button on the Home banner). This opens the Find and Replace window. 2. On the ‘Replace’ tab, in the ‘Find what’ box, type two spaces. 3. Then in the ‘Replace with’ box, type one space. This is asking Word to search for all instances of double spaces and replace each with a single space. 4. Select Find Next until you come to the instance you want to update. 5. Choose Replace, or choose Replace All to update all instances without stopping at each one. Note this finds all instances where there are two spaces, so if you’re using spaces instead of Tab align, then it will delete the extra spaces. As always, if you need any help, I’m here to chat

15.01.2022 #6TipsForEasierWriting Let's face it, we all have to write at some point. For some, writing is their livelihood, and for others, it's just an annoying part of their day. From manuscripts to emails, newsletters to blog posts or even these pesky social media posts - we need to park our bums and write something.... Here are my favourite 6 tips for making it easier ... 1. Write in the morning: For most of us, writing comes easier after a good night's sleep and fewer mistakes are likely to occur. 2. Write every day: 'Practice makes perfect!' Writing is a skill and the more you do it and exercise that muscle, your concept of writing both mentally and physically will improve. 3. Carry a notebook and pen: You need to be ready when the inspiration hits. Have a notebook in the car, by your bed, in your bag, even in the loo if you're that way inclined 4. Be a storyteller: Humans are drawn to stories, so tell us one! Start with 'Once upon a time ...' and see where it leads you. 5. Let it rest: Step away from your words, go for a walk, tick something else off the to-do-list, then come back with fresh eyes and with your editor's hat on. 6. Cut the fluff: Every word has a purpose, so if it’s not doing its job, get rid of it. Words such as just, like, really and that are often not needed. Do you have a tip you’d like to share?

Writing is like going on a solo voyage around the world. You’re the one planning the route & steering the ship, hoisting the sails & scraping the barnacles from the hull just like you’re the one plotting, character building and telling the story And pulling into the occasional port to restock, take stock and refine the journey ahead or asking for help to fix the motor is like working with an editor. Sometimes a fresh set of eyes is all that’s needed to ensure it’s all smooth sailing to its final destination PUBLICATION. My editing style is nurturing with a big focus on readability. Pronounced: sis-uh-FEE-un In Greek mythology, Sisyphus was a cruel and greedy king of Corinth condemned eternally to roll a heavy stone up a hill, only to have it always roll down again. Sisyphean means: requiring continual and often ineffective effort. Unending, thankless, and ultimately unsuccessful efforts. Sentence: Roy was stuck in a Sisyphean loop, typing the same memo over and over. Note: Sisyphean is capitalised as the word is based on a name. What weird word have you come across this week? It's something that pops up in my editing, for both businesses and novelists. When sentences are short, they're easier to read. If it's easier, then your audience or reader will stay engaged and hopefully get to the end! The tip: each sentence should have one simple thought.
