25.01.2022 HHHypothalamic Amenorrhoea (HA) Put very simply, HA = absence of your period for more than 6 months when no medical diagnosis can be found after all appropriate testing has been conducted. If you are experiencing HA (and also haven't just come off the pill)... perhaps the underlying reason as to why you have lost your period is undereating/overexercising and consequent stress on your body. If we do not provide our beautiful bodies with enough nutrients (and a wide varie...ty of them) our body cannot and will not thrive. Our hypothalamus (part of our brain) so intelligently decides we should stop ovulating...as a protective mechanism! Losing your period is your body screaming out for help and support Especially as females, we must provide ourselves with enough nourishing foods on a daily basis in order for everything to function properly, mentally and physically. 21.01.2022 NNNight Routine What is your nighttime routine? How do you help yourself wind down at night? ... Sleep is one of THE MOST important things for our well-being. Sleep allows for our body systems to repair and regenerate, including our precious nervous system, adrenals and brain! A few days with zero sleep, we would be completely dysfunctional!! And although vital, sleep is often one of the first things we sacrifice to get stuff done Ideally, we want to aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep/night, depending on you and what your body requires. It is science. There are a few genetically predisposed individuals or those that partake in DEEP meditation daily that can cope with less sleep. Yet for most of us, we need to be aiming for that 7-9 hrs/night. Remember, everything starts with sleep. There are nights that are just beyond your control, if you have small kids etc this is OK and hopefully only temporary . 20.01.2022 SSSStreeeeesssssss. Oh boy, this is a big one and I don't quite know where to start. Stress acts to motivate and sharpen your focus and reactions when you are faced with an immediate issue or ‘danger’. This is a GREAT RESPONSE!! This kicks in your sympathetic nervous system, otherwise known as your ‘fight/flight’ response, enabling you to respond to this danger.... The issue these days is, we are often staying in this ‘fight/flight’ response as these ‘immediate dangers’ are popping up numerous times a day, e.g. work deadlines, financial concerns, our increasingly busy lifestyles, A PANDEMIC, just to name a few. This is keeping our ‘fight/flight’ response alert, and less time for our poor little parasympathetic system (‘rest and digest’ response) to do what it needs to do. This chronic stress/ 'fight flight' mode, sustained for long periods of time is affecting every system of your body and this is when stress quickly becomes not such a great thing. The good news? 14.01.2022 OOOpen the blinds baby! Carrying on from yesterday's night routine post, what do you do first thing when you wake up? One of THE most important things we can do when we wake up is open the blinds!! To help regulate our sleep-wake cycle (circadian rhythm), we need to allow actual sunshine (not our phones or artificial light) to hit our eyes first thing in the morning. This helps promote the production of cortisol - our awake hormone! ... So open those blinds as soon as that alarm goes off (or a minute or two after), eat breakfast outside if you can, have a stroll around the block etc. Let that sunshine in! 14.01.2022 MMModeration ....it is all about moderation!! Why this post? Firstly, it has one of my amazing humans in it @nomad_chiro and one of my favourite drinks....heeeellloooo Espresso Martini. ... Secondly, it's aalllll about moderation. I do not and will not ever expect PURE health and wellness in all that my patients do and consume every second of every day. That is completely unrealistic, boring, insane and just downright silly! For me, achieving health and wellness is actually all about moderation when it comes to food and lifestyle. Eating a wholefoods diet and living a wholesome life is not about restricting and depriving yourself. That would do no good for anyone (trust me, I tried ). Keeping in mind there are foods/drinks (ahem....espresso martinis) that do not necessarily nourish our cells, but they are damn delicious and part of a balanced diet. It is OK to eat/drink them!! I am not promoting an espresso Martini every day, but when the mood strikes - heck YES! All in moderation my friends! We literally live once. And that's it. Apart from flexibility with food, allowing yourself some kind of luxury each day is a lovely way to also achieve moderation...it could be running a bath, reading a book, having time out to meditate, booking in that weekend away, switching off screens at night and so on. And yes....we are nearing December and we all know what that means... the CHRISTMAS PERIOD! Eep! Christmas time can bring up a whole range of things for different people, especially after this year we have all had. 2020 has been an ENORMOUS year for us all! ... I want to ask, what have you been doing for your mental health, enjoyment and happiness? Think about it.what are you doing each day for your mental health, enjoyment, happiness, and/or relaxation? I encourage you to start allocating time EACH DAY up until the Christmas period (and ideally beyond), for your mental health, even if it is just 5-10 minutes. This might look like going for a walk around the block in the sunshine, pouring that bath and lighting a few candles, booking in that little road trip, meditating, spending time with that friend who always makes you feel good, doing that class you have been talking about for so long, and so on. We are all different and unique amazing individuals and we all function as individuals at our own personalised, natural weight, whatever that is for you. ... I see a lot of patients starting their day with a coffee on an empty stomach (zero judgement of course - I have been guilty of this also). Especially without food in the stomach, water too, this coffee on an empty stomach is promoting our STRESS RESPONSE. We can experience enough stress in the day as it is, so let’s do what we can to prevent stress first thing in the morning. So instead of reaching for that coffee straight away, think WATER FIRST YOU LEGEND, and ideally breakfast too! About 1-2 hours after your water and breakfast is then a great time to enjoy that well-deserved coffee

05.01.2022 Dear QQQuads, Thank you <3 Thank you for... 1. Enabling me to walk, squat, lunge, run, swim, sit, stand, in fact, move in any way!... 2. Taking me to and from everywhere I go, every single day. 3. Lunging on the d-floor/living room on a regular basis. 4. Always supporting hips, gluts, hamstring and knees. They love you and all that you do for them. Knees especially thank you for all the stability you have provided them over the years. 5. Just always being there, supporting me in every way possible and doing your very best. Quads, you are pretty great and I am very glad and thankful to always have you right there, every step of the way I think we all fall into the pattern of picking out body parts and speaking to them so horribly and with no appreciation. Always wanting to change some part of ourselves in some way. Often, we keep going back to that one body part or two. Today, I ask you to think about that body part that you are so quick to criticise....and thank it for all that it does for you. What does it allow you to do and achieve? Without it, how would you function at your best? Hint: you wouldn't. Each time you catch yourself speaking so negatively about it....stop yourself and instead, thank it for all that it does for you. 03.01.2022 DITCHING THE SCALES Our view of health and how many seem to talk about health & well-being, is still saturated with focussing on weight, terms like ‘weight loss’, ‘summer bodies’, ‘lose weight and feel great’ are everywhere. We are C.O.N.S.T.A.N.T.L.Y hearing, reading and talking about weight and the appearance of our bodies. And oh boy, do I strongly believe this needs to change. How about we started focussing more on all the other amazing aspects and indicators of our... health? Taking our focus away from this constant desire and pressure to be (for whatever crazy reason) a smaller version of ourselves, to weigh less/lose weight, to change ‘X’ body part and so on. 03.01.2022 Good Morning Today, we talk about REST DAYS. When I was in the midst of my ED, rest days were a foreign term. Allow my body to rest and incorporate days of no high intensity exercise into my week!? I just couldn't allow myself to do it due to my biggest fear: weight gain. Coupled with under-eating and undernourishment, my poor body and mind suffered BIG time. ... Fast forward the clock, having been in recovery for 2+ years, I LOVE my rest days. Part of my recovery journey (with the help of my glorious Psychologist) was incorporating rest days into my week and also reducing the intensity of the exercise I was doing on the days I did choose to exercise. This my friends, was where the magic started to happen. My periods became like clockwork and I slowly learnt how to; - stop punishing my body through exercise, - allow myself the very much NEEDED rest days from high intensity exercise, - enjoy movement and exercise for all the great things it brought me. And here I am talking movement/blood flow/organ functioning, bone health, strength, happiness, overall health and well-being....NOT weight loss. Guys and girls....we need our rest days, Every. Single. Week. LADIES who have lost their period to something similar: If you want your periods to kick back in for good...this is paramount. I know this isn't easy for some to hear and don't get me wrong....I still move my body on my rest days (because our bodies need to move) but it is more a gentle stroll, stretch session, or walk with my husband/friend. Perhaps a swim at the beach (in summer).
