19.01.2022 Rodent Contaminated Feed Have you had hay stacks or grain sheds impacted by mice? Before you feed out contaminated feed have a read of the below! ... Mice urine can spread Leptospirosis (Lepto) there are more than 250 different strains of Lepto. Two of which can cause abortions in cattle. With many others causing severe illness in humans. To protect cattle against Lepto they should be fully vaccinated. This required 2 doses of either a 7 in 1 vaccine or Leptoshield. Lepto is not know to cause clinical disease in sheep. Adequate PPE is required for humans as no vaccine is available. Botulism is a rapid onset usually fatal disease caused by a bacterial toxin that lives in dead mice carcasses, causing flaccid paralysis. The animals go down and cannot eat or drink and will eventually die. Botulism vaccination is available for sheep and cattle but some do required 2 doses so plan ahead prior to feeding! Assess damage and contamination of each feed and determine risks involved. If a high contamination is present it may be best to not feed. If there is minimal contamination and you can take reasonable steps to manage risks via vaccination and safe handling of hay then it could be used.
