16.01.2022 New habits! What is involved in forming new habits? Habits are formed over time from performing repetitive tasks. There are hundreds of habits that we do automatically every day. Setting an alarm before bed every night, brushing your teeth every morning, drinking coffee when you first get out of bed, doing the laundry, and paying bills on time are all habits. Most would agree these habits all have a positive outcome. But, how do we change habits with less desirable outcomes?... First, become aware of what your habits are and what triggers them. Is it the smell of a doughnut? Is it skipping a workout because you can’t find your socks (guilty ) Cues trigger you to perform a behaviour and performing that behaviour is associated with a reward. With something like eating a doughnut, the reward is immediate; you feel good. With exercise, it is a little different. Working out can be tough and a little uncomfortable, so for some, the reward comes from avoiding this discomfort i.e. skipping a workout. The problem is, while the short-term reward feels good, the longer-term outcome of repeating these scenarios is not positive. So, what is the solution? Find a way to interrupt the cycle! Do you need to walk a different way so that you don’t pass the doughnut shop? Do you need to have your socks laid out the night before so that you don’t skip your morning workout because you can’t find your socks? * Start by writing a list of all your habits across the day, * Group them into positive and less desirable habits, * Identify the cues linked to less desirable habits, * Put strategies in place for interrupting the cycle.
