11.01.2022 Thi friends, we are having technically difficulties delaying the October Newsletter release. Keep an eye out in your inboxes for it to pop in over the weekend or next week. So you don't miss this event if you are interested... The University of Adelaide Professorial Lecture Series... Sugars Solutions The Mouth and Beyond Presenter: Professor Paula Moynihan When: Monday 26 October, 6 - 7 pm Where: The Braggs Lecture Theatre, North Terrace campus and online Cost: Free register here: https://www.adelaide.edu.au//professorial-lecture-series-p Sugars Solutions The Mouth and Beyond Sugars have received a lot of bad press over recent years, but is sugar really the demon it is made out to be? What are the effects on the mouth and the body of eating too many sugars-rich foods and drinks? Are all sugars bad for you? and how do Australians fare when compared with global recommendations on thresholds for intake? These are some of the questions that Prof Moynihan will address in her presentation Sugar Solutions, the Mouth and Beyond. In addition to presenting her research on the impact of dietary sugars on teeth, that underpinned the WHO Guideline on Sugars Intake for Adults and children, she will also summarise what we know about the role of sugars in obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Focusing on potential solutions to the sugar issue, she will consider the importance of both upstream (e.g. sugar tax) and downstream (e.g. public education) approaches to sugars reduction. This will include her recent research to evaluate Public Health England’s ‘Sugar Smart’ health marketing campaign and developing approaches to support sugars reduction through schools and dental practice. Hear more about our speaker: Paula Moynihan is Director of Food and Health in the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. She is an internationally renowned researcher in the field of nutrition and oral health. Her research focuses on the interrelationship between nutrition and oral health across the life-course, including the impact of diet and nutrition on dental caries, sugars and health, and the impact of compromised oral health on nutritional wellbeing. She also researches novel approaches to dietary intervention using co-development methods, and mixed methods evaluation.
