25.01.2022 I am now an accredited practitioner for Fitgenes! The reason I chose to learn and offer this, is because your DNA does not change, you only need to test once - and it's a personal blueprint of you! By learning some of your unique genetic variations, you can tailor your food and lifestyle to support optimum health and longevity.

22.01.2022 Healthy eating, weightloss and alcohol intake during the fun festive season is a challenge!! Heres 3 quick tips to help reduce the after party regrets: #1 Exercise in the mornings before the busy events for the day take over. ... #2 Eat a healthy snack before a party to avoid hunger and over-indulging in the party food. #3 Alternate each alcoholic drink with a water. You can have a soda and slice of lime and pretend it's a vodka mix. You will be more hydrated, slow your alcohol intake and reduce any hangovers!

22.01.2022 Cutest picture of intestine I could find! The little finger like projections are called villi. They increase surface area for absorption of nutrients. Most digestion occurs here. Enzymes are released from the pancreas to complete digestion of carbohydrates, protein and fats, and bile from the gall bladder also assists with fat digestion. Damaged Villi and inflammation can result in reduced digestion, intestinal permeability (leaky gut), nutrient deficiencies from inadequate a...bsorption and increasing food intolerances. Improving digestion is the key to many chronic health complaints. Always a good place to start!

15.01.2022 Nearing the end of our digestive journey! The lining is much smoother in the colon than in the small intestine, designed to move waste along. The colon is where most of our microbiome live. They help ferment and breakdown any remaining carbohydrates and protein, producing short chain fatty acids and even manufacture some vitamins.... You really want great diversity and harmony with these guys. A less than healthy diet, some medications , or pathogen invasion (gastro, parasites, candida etc), can result in microbial overgrowth of undesirable species and crowding out the good guys. A happy microbiome loves lots of fruit, vegetables and fibre.

13.01.2022 Next up in the digestive journey is the stomach. Able to produce 1-3 litres of gastric fluid per day, containing hydrochloric acid (HCL) and digestive enzymes. One of HCL's function is to break down protein. The low pH (high acidity) also keeps the environment fairly sterile. Did you know that the cause of acid reflux is often due to low stomach acid? This causes slowed digestion and food stays in the stomach longer.... The higher pH also can allow bacteria and pathogens to survive and relocate to other areas of the digestive tract. Symptoms can include bloating, pain, flatulence, diarrhoea, constipation. and many other downstream presentations. When talking with clients about complex health problems, digestions is always discussed.

12.01.2022 A gene is essentially a DNA sequence that produces a molecule with a function. Humans share 99.0% of DNA. The remaining 1% is what makes each of us unique, like height or hair colour. It also can differ in our risk for developing health conditions like diabetes or cardiovascular disease. The interaction between your genes and the environment (diet, exercise, lifestyle) has the strongest effect on your health.

10.01.2022 How it works. Book in for an initial consult to discuss your health requirements or concerns, outline of the program and complete the test (a cheek cell swab sample). The test takes 4- 6 weeks for laboratory analysis. A genetic profile is sent to your practitioner (me) for interpretation.... I will contact you and arrange a time for your follow-up report of findings and personalised program outlining interventions to improve heath and wellbeing (Nutrition, exercise, lifestyle) for healthy living and healthy ageing. Look out for my special offer in October!

10.01.2022 We all know that thought, sight and smell of food triggers our appetite.....the smell of cooking bacon or brewing coffee, the sight of mouthwatering strawberries.. But did you know this sends a message via the vagal nerve to increases oral and gastric secretions in the mouth and stomach? Preparing the upper digestive tract for the arrival of food. Before digging in, take a few good whiffs of your meal. This helps you really appreciate your soon to be consumed sustenance (mindfulness) and bonus, aids in optimal digestion.

09.01.2022 How can it help? My own Fitgenes genetic profile test came back with genes having variations associated with inflammation (explaining symptoms like delayed onset muscle soreness after strenuous exercise). Beneficial diet and life style choices included eating anti-inflammatory foods, supplementing with omega 3’s and to avoid over training at the gym.... Good news was other variations indicated red wine and coffee (two of my favourite things) as being beneficial in moderation. Targeted and proactive health

07.01.2022 What is Fitgenes and how can it help me? Basically Fitgenes is designed as personalised genetic profiling for health, wellness and longevity. It will report on genetic variations, which can influence your fitness, health and nutrition.... Genes tested influence inflammation, cell defence, immunity, vitamin D receptors, methylation and homocysteine metabolism, cardiovascular health and fat metabolism and cholesterol regulation. This can then give you the tools for preventative health, maintain health long term and help achieve personal health goals.

05.01.2022 Having a diverse range of microbiome (gut bugs) is optimal, and eating the types of foods that fuel the more beneficial species helps to keep the less desirables in check. Prebiotic supplements like GOS, FOS, Inulin, Lactulose, PHGG and Acacia Fibre are also available. People following a low FODMAP diet need to start slow and carefully, preferably with PHGG and Acacia.

02.01.2022 Mastication! Such a great word - just means to chew your food. Chewing breaks food down into smaller particles, increasing surface area to mix with saliva. Sounds a bit gross, but enzymes in the saliva begin breaking down fats and carbohydrates. Try holding a piece of cracker in your mouth and you will notice it gets sweeter as the carbohydrate chain is broken into smaller sugar molecules.... Chew your food well to aid in proper digestion!
