25.01.2022 So, here's a true story from my business history. After selling one of our cafes I decided to invest in a small business in an area realted to but not directly Hospitality. On paper the business made perfect sense. It was semi passive, it had a great revenue stream and it was an industry I knew and understood. It had low staffing costs and high profit. ... I made the decision to buy the business based purely on financial reasons. Over the 3 years of owning it, I had small bursts of inspiration however not enough interest to see it through. It became a hassle more than anything. Now this business supported my family and I for a few years before it was sold again, at less for what I paid for it But..it gave me one massive lesson, that is clear and relevant still. Do not buy a business based purely on financials. To have the drive, motivation and staying power to reach your business goals, you have to love your business. A business is way more than just the financials, it is your creative energy, it is the place where you go every day, it's your community. It is on your mind constantly. If your business is not providing you any more benefits than financial, you will loose interest really quickly and it will become a chore. And it will be worse than a job you hate because you won't be able to just resign and walk away. You are tied to your business. If you have experience in an industry that makes you smile, then stick with it.
