21.01.2022 It's our New Year's Resolution at the Northern Valleys Locavore Store to reduce food waste even more! Inevitably, there is food spoilage and waste in a grocery store and our commitment to offering the best quality produce means sometimes food that is still good enough to eat must be removed from the shelves. Staff get first dibs, and we have some very lucky chooks, cows and sheep at home. However, this year we'd like to do more, and we're planning to share lots of different ...ways to preserve food that's in season and abundant in store, as well as ways to use up those things in the fridge that are past their prime, yet too good to waste. This week we're starting with my family's favourite 'fast' food - passata! If you haven't heard of it before, passata is just the Italian name for a simple tomato pasta sauce which is handy, healthy and very versatile. In mid-summer we have an abundance of tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini, squash and onion in store, and it's a fantastic time to stock your freezer full of sauce which can be quickly heated up and added to pasta, used as a pizza sauce or a base for a stew - or any number of quick meals with a tomato base. 18.01.2022 CALLING ALL LOBSTER LOVERS!!! Fresh crays in Bindoon next Thursday! We're very excited that Lancelin Crayfisherman Clint Moss will be delivering fresh lobsters direct from the back of his boat to the Northern Valleys Locavore Store next Thursday!!... As you may have heard, local crayboat operators are having a tough time this year due to COVID limitations. Many, like Clint, are relying on their BOB (Back of Boat) sales to keep them afloat. This means they can sell up to 100 crays direct to public or local retail and restaurants each day. But you do normally have to collect them from the jetty in Lancelin. So we thought we'd see if any of our Locavore Store customers are keen to buy some delicious fresh WA lobster at the BOB price and collect from Bindoon? To make the trip worthwhile for Clint, we'd like to presell as many as we can before next Thursday. Order now to support Clint Moss and the Lancelin lobster industry!
