23.01.2022 Grave scores first gravel rally win of the year Somerset driver Nic Grave and Queensland navigator John Lakeland have taken out the first Tasmanian gravel rally event of the year, with a fighting win in the Page Hire Blythe Road Rally at Natone on Saturday. Competing in a Subaru Impreza WRX Sti, Grave and Lakeland won the seven-stage event by just 41 secs from Stowport driver Kade Barrett, in a Plymouth Fire Arrow, joined in the navigator’s seat by former Tasmanian and now A...delaide-based competitor David Guest. Hosted by the North West Car Club, the rally was the first round of the NWCC Rally Series, featuring a unique out and back format, minimising use of Sustainable Timber Tasmania forestry roads. Grave and Lakeland’s outright victory also saw them claim all-wheel-drive honours, while Barrett and Guest were the fastest rear-wheel-drive team with their second placing. Fingal-Launceston combination Leigh Ford and Nic Browne finished fifth in their Honda CRX, more than five minutes behind the outright victors, but took out front-wheel-drive category honours in the process. Saturday’s event also included a regularity rally, which is a new concept for gravel rallying in Tasmania and based on similar categories in circuit racing and tarmac rallies, with the aim of achieving an average time for the stage. Regularities can be contested in normal road cars with a few basic safety requirements, such as carrying a fire extinguisher, and using helmets and appropriate footwear and clothing. Competitors are given a conservative target time for a stage (much less than full-on rally stage times) and crews lose time for going over or under the time, with the aim to become as regular as possible over every stage, hence the name. Teams lose five points for every second under the target time, but only lose one point per second for going over, discouraging drivers from trying to go too fast and err on the side of a slower time. Nathan Bugg and Kyle Peters were declared provisional winners after losing a total of 233 points. Impressively, they only lost two points on the first stage and four points on the fifth stage, compared to their worst effort, losing 69 points on stage six. Malik Fischer and Robert Jackson finished second in a Subaru RS after losing 261 points, while the Nancarrow-Duniam combination claimed the final podium spot after losing 347 points, competing in an unlikely Valiant Ute clearly demonstrating there’s no need to rally in a hotted-up turbocharged all-wheel-drive to be competitive in a regularity event.

23.01.2022 Reminder to all entrants of this weekend BJR khannacross, please make sure you fill out and send back the 3 Self-Scrutiny and Covid 19 Declaration forms. They can be found on the Motorsport Australia website with the sup-regs. These are a requirement of your entry and will be needed if you wish to run on the day. Any issues please contact the event secretary. Yvonne Payne... Event Secretary North West Car Club m 0418 593 302 See more
