08.01.2022 NWMC is greatly saddened by the bushfire tragedy currently gripping Australia. Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones and the communities who have lost homes and possessions. The fires have also been devastating for Australias wildlife and wild places, as massive areas of native bushland, forests and parks have been scorched. It is currently estimated around 1,25 billion animals may have been killed directly or indirectly from fires that have burnt over ...10 million hectares across Australia (equivalent to the whole of country of Austria). This heart-breaking loss includes thousands of koalas and other iconic species such as kangaroos, wallabies, kookaburras, cockatoos and honeyeaters burnt alive, and many thousands more injured and homeless. Many forests will take decades to recover and some species may have tipped over the brink of extinction. Only when the fires clear will we see the full extent of the damage. Whilst we may not have the full picture yet, we already know we will need a national wildlife and nature recovery plan to deliver: The generosity of Staff here at NWMC has seen many donate part of their wage with Directors Brian Lee and Sean Noonan matching every dollar donated. Money raised is currently an impressive $5716. NWMC have researched many worthy Bushfire Appeals and have elected to donate to The WWF Australian Wildlife and Nature Recovery Fund who are working towards: - Wildlife response - including partnering with wildlife response organisations, communities and scientist nationally for a swift and effective response and recovery at scale - Habitat restoration for people and nature - including restoring forests and damaged wildlife habitat, stopping deforestation, including cultivating habitat connectivity, core habitat and Indigenous and rural fire management. - Future proofing Australia - including driving innovative solutions to help mitigate climate change, driving climate preparedness, species adaptation and long-term wildlife and nature conservation efforts towards securing Australias natural resources for people and nature. If you would also like to help WWF-Australia get emergency funds to care for our injured wildlife and when the fires clear, help restore the forest homes our koalas, kangaroos and other animals have lost we urge you to donate directly via the below link. https://donate.wwf.org.au/donate/koala-crisis/koala-crisis Thank you to the following staff members who donated Lisa Chambers, James Forde, Raymie Kieran, Hannah Mark, John Murphy, Vivien Murray, Sean Noonan, Brian Lee, Michael Vogel @emmapearce Felicity Scott
