25.01.2022 A big thank you to a community member who has made a very generous donation to our young people and families as they navigate their way through these strange times. It is vital we support young people to continue to secure housing, remain safe and supported in these difficult times. We have relied on donations like this, from the community, to support our young people to stay safe, supported and connected in these times. For more information, please visit: https://www.nwyas.org.au/
25.01.2022 Thank you to the amazing community members who donated a toybox, blanket, desk and chair for a young Mum and her 4 year old daughter. The young Mum was ecstatic to receive the items and worked with her NWYAS worker to organise the room together for her daughter. Its these valuable donations that help the young people in our program build their home and make it feel welcoming for them and their families. #givit
25.01.2022 Maria is a 20 year old young Mum. When she first referred to NWYAS she had been couch surfing with friends with her son after being forced out of home from a young age. Maria was in need of stable accommodation. She had been forced out of where she was staying and at significant risk of sleeping rough. Something unimaginable for her and even more daunting due to COVID-19. NWYAS was able to advocate for Maria to gain stable housing, however working remotely due to COVID-19 res...trictions meant it was hard for us to support her directly and in person. With funding through our COVID-19 donations, we were able to provide Maria safe transport to sign up at her new place, provide emergency relief and help to move her and her sons belongings safely to her new accommodation. This is one positive story that has come from the wonderful support received through donations during this difficult time for the young people we support. 25.01.2022 Another huge shout out to Szephyr Guitars who donated this 'shred head' machine to our service. Our young person was thrilled and over the moon to receive such an awesome guitar. This awesome donation will help further our young person on their musical journey. This was the third guitar Szephyr Guitars produced last year in collaboration with students at Ferny Grove SHS. Students named it as such as they wanted to make a shred machine. This has definitely lived up to it's name! From all of us here at NWYAS and from the joy it has brought our young person, thank you so much!
25.01.2022 Thank you so much to Share the Dignity for the amazing donation of women's bags. These bags will go directly to the young women in our program who have experienced significant homelessness and adversity in their lives. These beautiful bags are packed with essential items and sanitary products which are otherwise difficult for the young women in our program to purchase themselves due to poverty and financial barriers.
24.01.2022 We understand the cost of domestic and family violence. We all know too many young people and families impacted. We all know too many communities struggling b...ecause of it. Today we extend our love and heartfelt agony to the family and friends of Hannah Clarke and Aaliyah, 6, Laianah, 4 and Tray, 3. Our hearts break for you and your inconceivable loss. A mass murderer just killed an entire family and perpetrated unimaginable harm on their extended family, friends and community - those left behind to figure out how to grieve such pain and horror. Those trying to figure out how one who was meant to care for family members committed such unspeakable acts Through this horror we hope you find peace born of the love you knew with Hannah and her children. To all those emergency services professionals and medical professionals, neighbours and community members who did all they could to assist - thank you!!! You are the people who give hope in these dire circumstances. 24.01.2022 A big shout out to Bridgeman Baptist Community Church for providing our tenants with the beautiful gift hampers full of Christmas goodies! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. It's with such generous and thoughtful community support like these hampers that can make Christmas (and 2020) a little bit brighter for the young people and families we support.
23.01.2022 Please help! NWYAS is fundraising for brokerage support to meet safety, health and connection needs of the very vulnerable families that we are housing and supporting. Can you help? What we most need in this time is brokerage money, allowing us to be creative in how we support our young people. Through this health crisis one of our families secured long-term accommodation through a private rental, transported to various open houses by ubers and remote support provided b...y NWYAS. Every dollar donated to NYWAS for a COVID specific response will directly assist young people and young families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and who are effected by the health crisis and service shut downs in this time. To donate feel free to contact us on (07) 3855 5233 or visit: https://www.nwyas.org.au/get-involved/donate/
23.01.2022 Did you know that from 2018-2019, 2 in 5 young people who needed assistance from homelessness services also reported mental health issues as a primary concern. Sleeping rough, couch-surfing and living in an unsafe environment all escalate mental health issues for young people. Visit our website to learn more at https://www.nwyas.org.au/
23.01.2022 For YHMD this year, some of our young people participated in an art project remotely from their home. Some of them also shared what it means for them to have safe and stable accommodation. For a lot of our young people, it is so important to have a safe space to express themselves and connect with others through art and creativity.
23.01.2022 In the lead up to International Womens Day on Sunday March 8th 2020, we celebrated with young women in our program through conversations over lunch. It was such an honour to celebrate IWD and talk with young women in our program about their experiences facing adversity, their bravery and constant fight to create an equal world for not only themselves but also their children. Thank you to all the young women who attended todays event and a special thank you to the Lord Mayors Charitable Trust for funding this event. #IWD2020
22.01.2022 If or when the coronavirus situation worsens, self-isolation will play a key role in protecting our community. How will people who are homeless manage to self-isolate without walls, a roof or doors? People who are homeless and rough-sleeping are not only significantly vulnerable to catching the virus, they may become seriously unwell. Rough-sleepers are often in very poor health. They may be elderly. Many have health conditions. How do you manage a flu or illness when youre homeless? Coronavirus is a community issue. Lets consider it from all angles.
21.01.2022 Deadly Choices! Heres to focusing on health and wellbeing!
21.01.2022 Zero Discrimination Day is a call for all peoples to be able to live a productive life with dignity, free from discrimination and exclusion. As outlined in the newly published Housing Policy in Australia: A Case for System Reform, this is difficult for young people experiencing homelessness, as many are not being accepted for affordable housing. The report notes that from 1996 to 2016 the number of affordable housing properties has remained the same across Australia, however the number of people requiring affordable housing has doubled in this time. This is resulting in many young people being excluded from the private rental market and creating a higher demand on homelessness shelters and services.
20.01.2022 We'd like to thank Mylestones Printing for printing our 2020 Annual Report. Mylestones Printing provide sustainable employment opportunities for people with disabilities. We are very impressed by the quality and by their customer service, thank you for working with us! A digital version of the 2020 Annual Report is available on our website here: https://www.nwyas.org.au/ann/nwyas-2019-2020-annual-report/
20.01.2022 We wish to thank the Hills and District Chamber of Commerce for all their support to our staff and young people through COVID-19 and self-isolation. The Hills and District Chamber of Commerce is such a support for our community in good times and in bad. We really appreciate all that they do for us, for local businesses, for not-for-profits and the community.
20.01.2022 "Domestic Violence has the same traumatic effect on all victims and sets into motion a cycle of violence, mental and physical health challenges and the increased likelihood of experiencing homelessness throughout their lives." This is especially true for young people experiencing homelessness.
20.01.2022 Congratulations to Amy who passed her P's test yesterday! Amy is a young single Mum who was in our supported accommodation for 9 months before exiting into long term housing with her daughter. In the time she was in our housing, she achieved many goals which she said she never had time to think about due to a long history of couch surfing, sleeping rough and transient living. Amy achieved so much and upskilled many areas of her life in a short amount of time. After gaining stable housing she told her Case Worker she was determined to pursue her goals - the main one being gaining a drivers license. This would ensure independence and safe travel for her and her daughter. With support through our Keys to Drive Program - Amy was able to achieve this. Awesome work Amy!!
19.01.2022 Most of us have taken some steps to prepare ourselves for a community-wide outbreak of coronavirus. We pick up an extra packet of toilet paper (or three!) and a few extra cans. Maybe we take precautions and stock up just in case. For the most vulnerable people in our community, there is no money for a few extra items. As we stack our extra cans into the cupboard tonight and check our stockpile of toilet paper, please take a moment to consider how many families open thei...r cupboards to completely empty shelves. Thousands of families in Brisbane live in poverty and struggle to meet their basic needs. Shelves are emptying. The media is flooded with stories about impending disruption and risk and worry. How do you prepare yourself and your family if you cant afford your groceries on a good week, let alone stockpiling for self-isolation? Coronavirus is a community issue. Lets consider it from all angles. See more
18.01.2022 A massive thanks to the Gambling Community Benefit Fund Queensland for supporting NWYAS! This will mean so much to so many young people. Thank you to Mark Furner for taking the time to visit us at the office and talking with us about our program. We appreciate your ongoing support.
17.01.2022 A big thank you to the kind community member who thought about our young people and how they were coping at a time like this. We divided her beautiful donations of toilet paper between the households that needed it and made the gift look as dignified and pretty as possible. All our tenants report they have enough toilet paper for now. Have you checked with the people in your life? Are there vulnerable people in your world who may benefit from a touch of kindness and dignity in this time?
16.01.2022 We're currently experiencing technical issues with our phone system. The office is still open. If you need to contact us or require assistance, please leave a message on our website here: https://www.nwyas.org.au/contact/ and we will call or email you back promptly.

15.01.2022 For the last few years NWYAS has created an art work for Youth Homelessness Matters Day with our tenants. Given this time we are working remotely for #YHMD2020, we still wish to stay connected with our tenants and raise awareness about youth homelessness. This year we are sending out art and creative supplies to tenants and bringing together a collage artwork to help raise awareness of why it is important young people experiencing homelessness have access to safe and secure housing. Watch this space for more.
14.01.2022 A big thank you to Craig for his help and contribution to our organisation these past 9 months. Craig has been our locum Case Worker and Mobile Support Worker during this time. We will miss you and wish you all the best for your future in the sector!

11.01.2022 Mabo Day Celebrations is Wednesday June 3rd 2020. Tune in to the live stream tomorrow to commemorate, celebrate, acknowledge and discuss the legacy of Eddie Mabo.
10.01.2022 Massive shout out and huge thank you to Annie and Patrina from Bunnings for coming out to help NWYAS rejuvenate some yard space at one of our property blocks. Thank you so much Annie and Patrina for providing the tools, equipment and beautiful plants necessary to make this happen. Such awesome work and looking forward to some greenery to come!
10.01.2022 The 6th to the 12th September is National Child protection week. NWYAS supports many young people who have had an experience of being in care themselves or with their own children. These young people are our communitys most vulnerable because means they do not have natural family support systems. Many have experienced extreme trauma exiting the care system sometimes from abuse and neglect from their families of origin and from their experience of being in care themselves. Every child and young persons life matters. NO Young person under a child protection order should ever end up homeless.
10.01.2022 We are looking forward to the upcoming #Platform1225 event, make sure to get your tickets, this is a great event every year!
10.01.2022 North West Youth Accommodation Services is here to help. Refugees face several obstacles when applying for accommodation. These include language barriers, lack of documentation from previous rentals, identification and employment. Along with a lack of affordable housing. To find out more please visit out website; https://www.nwyas.org.au/
09.01.2022 A big thank you to the three outstanding community members who have donated through Rotary or through our website to assist our tenants and service users in this time. The COVID-19 health crisis has hit the whole community hard but it is particularly challenging for young people who are already vulnerable and isolated. Many of the young people we house and support require regular contact from specialised services to stay safe and this connection is compromised by poor reception, broken phones and a lack of data as well as most services needing to cease face-to-face contact. NWYAS is desperately fundraising to ensure the day-to-day needs of the homeless young people we assist are met in this time. To donate feel free to contact us on (07) 3855 5233 or visit: https://www.nwyas.org.au/get-involved/donate/
08.01.2022 "It starts with trusting someone enough to tell them you need help. Telling them you need to get to somewhere safe because you have no one in your life to rely on. Its not safe to go home, youre not welcomed there. You are forced to beg someone so you can sleep on their couch for the night." Over the years we have heard the voices and stories of young people experiencing homelessness. "Between 2017-18, approximately 43,000 young people sought help from Specialist Homelessn...ess Services (SHS). in the last decade, family violence and breakdown remains prevalent, and housing affordability continues to worsen." - National Youth Commission into Youth Employment and Transitions (2019). During COVID-19 restrictions, we have also noticed an increase in referrals to our service. With figures rising, we are realising the gravity and consequences of this situation for a lot of young people at risk and experiencing homelessness during this time. Your support is what can help young people experiencing disadvantage have a chance at rebuilding their life. Thank you to the amazing tenant who drew the lovely picture below for YHMD. For this event we asked tenants what safe housing means for them.
08.01.2022 National Homelessness Week runs from 2 8 August 2020. This years theme is Everybody needs a home, which reflects on the importance of having a home to stay... healthy and well during the COVID19 pandemic and from the devastating impact the bushfires have had for people who have lost their homes. During the week, people are asked to contact their local MP and get them to sign a pledge supporting investment in social housing. 08.01.2022 During this time we reflect on our feelings of being connected, community and creativity. Through donations funds we have received for our Stronger Together Program, we have been able to support young families in our program to create and express themselves whilst at home. We have been able to deliver art supplies and craft materials to our tenants to help relieve stress, minimise anxiety and encourage creative thinking during this difficult time. Watch this space for more to come!

06.01.2022 The media is saturated with hour-to-hour updates on the escalating coronavirus (COVID-19) situation. Tearooms and social media platforms buzz with conversations about empty shelves and a looming toilet paper shortage. Industries and businesses brace for impact. We wonder how these preparations and the pending health crisis will play out for the most vulnerable people in our community. How do you protect yourself from the risk of infection when youre rough-sleeping? To avoid infection, we are told to wash our hands, sneeze into tissues and stay home if we are sick. How does that play out for a person who is homeless and rough sleeping? How do you protect yourself when you live and sleep in a public place, without easy access to soap and water? Coronavirus is a community issue. Lets consider it from all angles.
06.01.2022 NWYAS is still offering the same service, we are just delivering it differently during the COVID-19 pandemic.
06.01.2022 The COVID-19 health crisis and the lock-down of services has put a lot of very vulnerable families at risk. The young people we support struggle to maintain connection with specialised services remotely due to poor reception and limited data or broken phones. Domestic violence and mental health issues are rapidly increasing at a time when marginalised, vulnerable people have never been more isolated and alone. Can you help? Every dollar you donate to our COVID-19 specific fund directly benefits homeless young people connected to NWYAS stay safe, healthy and connected in this time. 06.01.2022 Today is Youth Homelessness Matters Day 2020. For so many of us during this unprecedented time it can be hard to stay connected and support young people experiencing homelessness. Its so important we acknowledge so many young people in this country do not have access to a safe, stable and secure home. Young people who have accessed our program have told us time and time again how important it is that they have access to stable housing. Not only to allow them the opportunity to build towards their future but also for their safety.
04.01.2022 Today is International Womens Day. Many young women who refer to our service have incredible survival stories to share. Here at NWYAS we wish to celebrate these women and all the women in our lives and working in our organisation past and present. #IWD2020 is about #EachforEqual. Collectively, each one of us can help create a gender equal world. Gender equality is important for communities to thrive. We can all build on this story together and create a bigger impact as a whole. For more information please visit: https://www.internationalwomensday.com/

02.01.2022 Thank you so much to our volunteer project coordinator Mel from Positive Bridges Consultancy Services, who has been putting together these beautiful personalised welcome packs. These packs will be given to our young people as they move in, providing them with toiletries, food, treats and thoughtful gifts. Handmade cards with a lovely message are attached saying, Welcome to your new home. This gift was put together by a community member who cares. Positive Bridges’ vision is to build a bridge between people with disabilities and the mainstream community, through the provision of high quality information.

02.01.2022 Reconciliation Australias predecessor, the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation (CAR), was established from recommendations of the 1991 Royal Commission into ...Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. Almost three decades on, most of the reports shocking findings remain unchallenged and unabating. In fact, Guardian Australias Deaths Inside database chronicles the more than 400 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have died in custody since. A crucial part of Australias truth-telling process is understanding how the past impacts the future. As in the days of CAR, reconciliation cannot occur without justice, equity, and historical acceptance in our institutions; and relationships built on trust and respect in our communities.
