24.01.2022 #ThrowbackThursday We’ve got a passionate bunch working in the Northern and Yorke region and for many of them, that interest in our landscapes, the environment and agriculture was sparked at an early age. For a bit of fun, we’re stepping back in time to find out exactly when and where it all began.... First up is Landscape Officer David Hughes. (Yes, he has met his famous namesake, comedian Dave Hughescheck out the photo). David was barely out of the cradle when he discovered a love for weed control He’s pictured here squashing sour sobs at about a year old! But over to David to tell you more I always had a keen interest in working on the land. My father, a market gardener from Payneham, grew and sold flowers, potatoes, cauliflowers and stone fruit and my two brothers and I got involved from a young age. Rotary hoeing, spreading fertilizer, irrigation and burning were my specialties. In my childhood, I also spent time helping my grandfather and uncles at their merino sheep stud. I helped out at SA country shows and the Royal Adelaide Show during the school holidays, cutting and bailing hay and also had a bit of fun riding horses. The not-so-fun parts were shifting irrigation and treating fly struck sheep. Later on I studied Agricultural Production and then Agricultural Business at Roseworthy with graduate studies in Community Management at University of Technology, Sydney. I also completed an Advanced Diploma in Conservation, Land Management specialising in Weed and Vertebrate Pest Control through TAFE. I must really love this job, because I’ve been employed in the current and previous Board system on the Adelaide Plains and Barossa Ranges since 1987. Now that the Northern and Yorke region’s boundary has expanded to cover Adelaide Plains, Gawler, Light and the Barossa, I’m now part of the Northern and Yorke Landscape Board and loving working in more northern parts of SA. . . . 18.01.2022 #ThrowbackThursday Want to know a bit more about our Northern and Yorke team and what sparked their passion for the environment, agriculture and our landscapes? Meet Jess Cavallo ... Jess is a Landscape Officer who works from our Gawler office. While she’s on a pest plant mission now, her first foray into the world of weeds wasn’t so illustrious! Over to Jess I grew up on a cropping and livestock farm just outside of Paringa in the Riverland and spent my summer holidays cutting and packing stone fruit on a neighbour’s property. One year I remember being tasked with digging up Caltrop on the irrigated block, but didn’t last long after complaining of being sick and getting sent home. Glad my work ethic has improved a little since then! While at school I always had a love for the environment, attending camps at Calperum Station and in Albury Wodonga. I even did a two-week environment exchange to Ellijay, Georgia in the USA. After school, this love for the outdoors didn’t disappear and I decided to spend three years studying a Bachelor of Applied Science: Biodiversity, Environmental and Park Management. It was a great three years of partyingwhoops, I mean studyingbefore I landed my first job as a District Officer for the Eyre Peninsula Landscape Board, based at Ceduna. I worked with a great team who taught me so much (you know who you are!) After a short sabbatical in a native plant nursery in Melbourne I returned to SA and a new District Officer role, this time in the Gawler officewith another great team! One of the things I enjoy the most about my job is working with private landholders to improve property management, especially those rare native patches. . . . 16.01.2022 Spotted a weed you haven't seen for a long time? With these spring rains, conditions are ideal for weeds to emerge that have been missing in action during the dry spell. Two pest plants with huge potential to cause headaches for landholders are African Rue and Creeping Knapweed. They both have extensive root systems that make them very difficult and expensive to control once established.... 14.01.2022 In addition to a Netflix binge this weekend, think about spending some time tackling prickly pest weeds like Caltrop. South Australia's current COVID-19 restrictions coincide with the germination of this spiky declared weed, which spreads by sticking to shoes, tyres and stock. Landscape Officer Ben Page says right now Caltrop is easy to pull out by hand. "Think of it as a COVID-safe activity; a quick walk around your property with your eyes peeled for Caltrop."... And if you've already got Caltrop prickles from previous years, here are a couple of tips: 1 Throw on some thongs and walk over the infested area (then carefully dispose of the prickles) 2 Lay down a piece of old carpet, walk over it and then put it in the bin. Look out for Innocent weed and Khaki weed too, as it's the prime time for these burr weeds to take hold. Read the full story: https://landscape.sa.gov.au//201120-dont-let-caltrop-hitch . . . 13.01.2022 Got Salvation Jane on your property? Here’s how to look for the biological control agents that can keep this pervasive weed at bay. Landscape Officers Jess Cavallo and David Hughes demonstrate a quick and easy way to look for the friendly root and crown weevils in your paddock. All you need is a shovel and piece of white cardboard or old corflute sign.... And if you don’t find any, we’d love to hear from you! While we can’t release the agents this year due to low numbers, we hope to work out the priority areas for biological control in the next few years. Please get in touch with the Northern and Yorke Landscape Board on 8841 3400. And don’t forget there are other ways to keep on top of Salvation Jane: Outcompete weeds by growing healthy pastures and local, indigenous plants Avoid overgrazing areas as Salvation Jane thrives on bare ground . . . 09.01.2022 They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks, but beef producer Vic Patrick disagrees. After 50 years of farming I didn’t realise how much I didn’t know the course is more than a refresher and extremely valuable. Vic was part of a group of livestock producers from across the Barossa, Lower North and Northern Hills who participated in a profitable grazing systems course, Gra$$ to Dollars, which was supported by the Northern and Yorke Landscape Board and Meat & Liv...estock Australia (MLA). Talking Livestock's Deb Scammell, who delivered the course with Tim Prance, said, "They built skills to manage stock in a way that improves pasture production and maintained ground cover, as well as strategies to select the best pasture varieties for their production goals and apply fertiliser to optimise production and soil health." 02.01.2022 Our landscape ecologist Dr Grace Hodder and a troop of trusty volunteers have had a busy time in the field during the past two months. As part of the Marna Banggara project, they’ve surveyed mouse abundance in barley and wheat crops on southern Yorke Peninsula. This baseline data will be used to monitor the effectiveness of Barn Owls in controlling mouse numbers, a potential flow-on benefit for the agricultural community. In coming years, we hope to augment current population...s of native Barn Owls by installing nest boxes in the project area. At the same time, a National Parks and Wildlife Service SA team has spent several twilight hours surveying Barn Owls to determine whether predator-prey numbers are in balance. Surprisingly this season, predator numbers were lower than prey numbers, whereas they have correlated in the past.
