21.01.2022 Senior Members of South Australian EPA Visit Site Last week we hosted a site visit from senior members of the South Australian Environment Protection Authority Tony Circelli CEO, Peter Dolan Director of Regulation and Kathryn Bellette Director Strategy and Assessment. The EPA group were touring the Upper Spencer Gulf Region, visiting a number of industries and familiarising themselves with the numerous environmental aspects of the region and the issues that different indu...stries needed to consider and manage to minimise environmental harm. The visit from this group was the first since the beginning of 2018 and as our site has undergone considerable change since then, they were keen to see firsthand what improvements had been made, what our focus areas were for the coming months and importantly how we were tackling things like LIA to ensure we delivered the step change improvements that are required. The visit consisted of a presentation covering a wide range of issues we are managing and tour of the site. A particular strong focus was our current LIA performance and the challenges we are facing regarding meeting our new licence conditions which we will report to at the end of December.

19.01.2022 HARRISON IS ON THE MOVE Meet 8-month-old Harrison. He loves spending time on the floor playing and sliding around as he gets ready to crawl. He also loves chewing and sucking on things. Babies are vulnerable to environmental lead exposure and can absorb more than 50% of the lead that enters their bodies. As babies get older and spend more time on the floor and begin to put toys and objects into mouths, their blood lead levels can increase quite rapidly. Harrison has just had ...his first blood lead level test at the Environmental Health Centre. His Mum, Teesha, said his results were good and she knows it’s important to keep an eye on things. Here are Teesha’s Tips: Wash dummies regularly, especially if they end up on the floor; Keep a spare clean dummy in a sealed container ready to swap in; Wash baby toys and playthings regularly, particularly those that get sucked and chewed; Wash and dry hands frequently yours and baby’s; Before laying a baby on the floor put down a clean rug or blanket as a play mat. These can be washed; Clean floors regularly. Either vacuum or damp mop when the kids are elsewhere; Leave shoes at the door to stop dirt being tramped in on those clean floors! Share this post with family and friends who have little ones or little ones who come to visit. EHC recommends babies should have their first Blood Lead Level test when they are 6 1/2 months old. 12.01.2022 SAFE TO SWIM OFF SOLLY BEACH SA Health has confirmed that it’s safe to swim in the Pirie River because the heavy metal contamination found by a recent Uni SA study is contained in the sediment. Avoid swallowing the river water and hit the showers and wash off any sand and sediment before you head home.

11.01.2022 As part of Nyrstar’s ground water testing program, PFAS chemicals have been identified at a number of sampling bores around the site. Due to the diverse use of PFAS chemicals in household and industrial products for decades, PFAS chemicals have been identified throughout the broader community. While PFAS have not proven to cause any specific illnesses in humans, Nyrstar is currently investigating potential PFAS sources on site. Investigations are ongoing.

01.01.2022 PAINTING OR RENOVATING? BE LEAD PAINT AWARE Prior to the mid-1970's, paint used on the exterior and interior of many homes and buildings contained high levels of lead. Lead was used in paint as an effective colour pigment and it made paint tough and durable. However, lead-based paint can become a significant health problem when it deteriorates or is damaged or disturbed. It can enter our bodies as we breathe in fumes and small particles or swallow paint flakes or dust. Befo...re you start painting and renovating check out these resources. https://www.environment.gov.au/.../lead-paint-fifth... https://www.sahealth.sa.gov.au//Fact+Sheet+-+Lead-based+pa Copies of these resource are also available from the Environmental Health Centre @ 117 Gertrude Street, Port Pirie See more

01.01.2022 Workshop First Year Apprentices Shine with 5S Improvements The Workshop first year Apprentices have implemented many small but incredibly important 5S improvements this year with guidance from their mentors Gary Curley, Marcus Farrugia & John Stapley. 5S has proven a key in the development of the Apprentices when using the principals with their safety record being a testament to this. Comments have been positive ranging from, having the correct tools in place, able to find ...things easily, eliminates time wasted & the frustration of looking around for equipment. The most noticeable change has been in the pride shown in their work, work areas & the quality of finished products. If you are enjoying what you are doing & you have a well-supported program with the right equipment the environment created can only fast track your development. A big shout out to the Mentors for embracing the principals of 5s & guiding the Apprentices to make a better work place for all to experience. One more improvement to watch out for in 2021 is a new cabinet designed especially for the new Apprentices which will have all the materials, tools & drawings in a booklet format as a one stop shop for their initial hand skills development.
