25.01.2022 Connecting Australian school students to the wide variety of study and career options available in STEM is what the NYSF is all about. We're delighted to see NYSF 2020 Alumni, Alana Dooley featured today in The Australian giving her thoughts on high school subject selection. The article highlights the advice of Australia's Chief Scientist to give students clear and consistent advice around taking core subjects in senior high school years to ensure they are best prepared for u...niversity studies and can achieve their STEM job aspirations. https://www.theaustralian.com.au//465eda9834193251a1f48ed4 Alana is a year 12 student at Warwick Senior High School in Perth who loves physics and plans to attend university in 2021 and work in STEM. Also, a proud Nunga woman who grew up on Noongar Country in WA, Alana recently won the 2020 Naidoc Perth Award for Education Achievement. Alana said, "having a clear framework to advise the types of subjects you should study based on what you want to do at university would take a lot of anxiety out of choosing school subjects in Years 11 & 12." In regards to planning her future, Alana who attended the NYSF in 2020 said, "university outreach programs were helpful, and so were initiatives like the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) in which she participated in January this year, to help students decide their subjects". Today's article follows a new report from the Office of the Chief Scientist and the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute titled the ‘Mapping University Prerequisites in Australia’ paper. This paper analyses university mathematics and science prerequisites for domestic undergraduate courses across a range of disciplines. https://www.chiefscientist.gov.au//mapping-university-prer #STEM #STEMeducation #AMSI #ChiefScientist #NAIDOC #womeninstem

21.01.2022 (This week in ScienceAlert!)

21.01.2022 This year has thrown countless challenges at us all, and with lockdown bringing feelings of social isolation and loneliness, there couldn't be a more important time to have a conversation about mental health by asking R U OK? Today is R U OK Day, so take a moment and reach out to that friend you haven’t seen in weeks, that family member who is acting a little different, and that person who is always bright and bubbly because you never know how someone is feeling on the inside. For a guide on how to ask if someone is okay and following up the conversation, head to their website https://www.ruok.org.au/join-r-u-ok-day

19.01.2022 Congratulations to 1998 NYSF Alumna Dr Denuja Karunadaran, for receiving the People's Choice Award in the 2020 Queensland Women in STEM Prizes. As a fellow of The University of Queensland Institute for Molecular Bioscience, Dr Karunadaran's research focus on how immune response drives obesity and how this then drives cardiovascular disease. 17.01.2022 Participants of the NYSF Year 12 Program attend at a time filled with change, pressure, and decision making about their future. The NYSF aims to help with their study and career choices by highlighting the vast array of STEM careers, but feelings of anxiety and uncertainty surrounding this can sometimes bubble up during the program. As part of the 2020 Student Staff Leadership Program, the Student Staff Leaders were recently joined by Catherine McCarthy from Mental Health First Aid Australia to discuss mental health, and how to support someone in a mental health crisis on the program and beyond. You can read about the mental health training our Student Staff Leaders received here: https://www.nysf.edu.au/helping-in-a-crisis-mental-first-a/

17.01.2022 Congratulations future NYSF Alumna and 2021 NYSF Year 12 Program participant Catherine Shaw for winning a Bronze Award in Rowe Scientific Depth Study Awards at the Science Teachers Association of New South Wales Young Scientist Awards. Her research found that the Fitzroy storm glass was less effective at predicting the weather at different concentrations of potassium nitrate. We look forward to all the bright minds joining us at the 2021 NYSF Year 12 Program in January. Wollondilly Anglican College

12.01.2022 These school holidays, it's time to take Australia's Chief Scientist's Storytime Pledge. NYSF CEO Dr. Melaine Bagg took the storytime pledge and recommends Ada Twist, Scientist, by Andrea Beaty, an inspiring tale about a curious little girl who loves science. The message is that it's okay to be different and that not all experiments will be a great success... and that's okay too! What story will you be reading to your children these school holidays? Take the Storytime Pledge to prioritise sharing a book with a child in your life, and help our next generation reach their fullest potential. https://www.chiefscientist.gov.au/StorytimePledge

10.01.2022 Do you know what’s happening in this snap from the NYSF 1986 Year 12 Program, because we’ve wracked our brain and have no idea! Comment below if you know

10.01.2022 A great new initiative by Australia's Women in STEM Ambassador supported by Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources, to raise awareness of the endless possibilities STEM careers on offer aimed at children 8-12.

09.01.2022 Although at the time, NYSF 2017 Alumna Jasmine Elliott had reservations about the Year 12 Program, she later realised just how important the program was for her personal growth as a future scientist. "Because when you’re shouting chants, when you’re pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone and meeting new people, and when you’re presenting a speech about making snails faster, you’re not doing science, but you ARE growing as a future scientist, no matter which field yo...u pursue." Jasmine's experience at the NYSF Year 12 Program has been crucial across her journey and her many interests, from medicine to ethics and justice. 09.01.2022 The hot and cold of ScienceAlert this week!

07.01.2022 The amazing work of NYSF’s founding partner Rotary does not stop at supporting Year 12 students finding their STEM passion. In 1979 Rotary International began their fight against Poliovirus, a highly infectious disease that most commonly affecting children under the age of 5. Since then, Rotary and its partners have done incredible work to immunise more than 2.5 billion children against Polio in 122 countries, reducing cases by 99.9% worldwide! On August 25 WHO announced all 47 regions in Africa are free of wild poliovirus, a major milestone achievement in public health. 07.01.2022 NYSF 2004 Alumna Lucy Du has continued to step outside her comfort zone since stepping off the bus to the NYSF Year 12 Program. Since then, she has worked with Australia's Chief Scientist to improve STEM participation in schools, and advocated for more inclusion of women in STEM. 'NYSF was the first time I was pushed out of my comfort zone. Similarly, science has taught me to be curious and to always challenge the status quo. Continue to challenge yourself by stepping out of your comfort zone. Only then can you grow to reach your full potential." 02.01.2022 STEM experience is hard to come across in rural towns, but fortunately, Emily Banks applied for the NYSF 2014 Year 12 Program and suddenly found herself in the big city of Perth where she saw the real world applications of STEM, all while surrounded by people that soon became her great friends. When it came to choosing my university options, I was inspired by the people I'd met at NYSF to couple my passion for science and maths with my love for the environment.
