23.01.2022 Rounding out this #waybackwednesday trio with some beautiful tutus ready to be shanked! I promise this isn’t as violent as it sounds. An important final step in the construction of any tutu is the thread catches, or shanks holding the layers together to both the layers directly next to them, and then for these plate tutus it’s particularly important that shanks also loop through multiple layers to hold the entire plate formation together to act as one,... rather than separating or drifting apart. During dance, it’s quite possible for shanks to come loose, even if installed properly, due to the vigors of the dancers, so one of the jobs of a costume standby is to check over each tutu for all its shanks and restitch them before each performance if necessary. This allows the plate tutus to look their best and allow the performance of each individual dancer to shine! See more

20.01.2022 Black masks back in store! I finally found a good solid polycotton I was happy with the quality of As always, available through the Mask Maiden Melbourne website, and part of every sale goes towards Mask Maiden’s purchase of fabrics for free masks for healthcare and frontline workers. Direct link in the first comment!

05.01.2022 I think one of the things that I learned from my major car accident - that Covid has definitely hammered home for me since then - is that life doesn’t always go according to plan. Here’s a bit of an odd one for my feed- a throwback to these delightful spring dresses I made for the young actresses in a music video being produced and shot by a uni friend, for another uni friend’s relatively new music project. Sadly, we got through one day of the shoot, had t...o reschedule for extra coverage to complete it... and then a fire tore through the fields we’d been shooting in later that week, meaning we couldn’t finish the shoot as planned! I learned a lot, this being my first music video shoot (before I’d even gone to @waapacostume ) - and I’m sure @sndrvnkls did too. Anyway, Elk Road seems to be doing pretty well since then (which is a massive understatement), and I couldn’t be prouder of our Perth boy making it huge It’s a funny old world, isn’t it? I’m trying to cling to the idea that things not going to plan doesn’t mean they won’t turn out alright in the end. Vic lockdown is a struggle, but I’d rather be here than in any of the countries completely ignoring basic epidemiology, so there’s always a silver lining. What’s something that didn’t go to plan in your life? Did it work out for you? See more

05.01.2022 I think we’ve got a bit of a blue theme happening this week! Here’s a throwback to tailoring - I really loved using this gorgeous Dormeuil wool for construction of this suit jacket for my partner. It’s always so much fun seeing the structural stitching and bones of a jacket either when it’s in a partial state of completion like this one, or when opening it up for alterations! Windowpane plaid is so much fun to fussy cut for pattern matching too... I should make some suit trousers for myself in a fabric like this, haha. I’m getting the itch again! What’s something you like looking at in a partial state? What are you in the middle of right now?

01.01.2022 Memento Mori- a reminder of death. Or just of spooky scary skeletons! Gorgeous (jasmine scented!) skull candle by the wonderful Bex FX Studio Bought this fabric for masks for Halloween, but it came in a little bit late for my Hallowe’en mask orders through Mask Maiden Melbourne - nevertheless, it’s always a good time to wear a skull on your skull and get those goth vibes going for spooky season or all year round! ...I may have been subconsciously influenced by my maxillo...facial surgeon. I’m finishing up my orthodontic treatment with a jaw surgery soon, and she is a lovely individual who collects skull-themed memorabilia. I guess kind of like how I collect scissors, they’re a marker of her profession? I might make her one of these to say thank you. As always, masks available at Mask Maiden Melbourne! Link in first comment with tags part proceeds of every mask goes towards our free mask program for frontline health workers. My masks all have three layers, a conformable nose wire for best fit, and elastic channels for longevity (so you can swap them out if they stretch out).
