25.01.2022 I was contacted recently by people concerned that surveyors were working in Benthall Street and surrounding streets, and that was a precursor to works pertaining to the Strathmont Redevelopment. Not so. The surveyors were contracted by Council to undertake work to ascertain levels on local roads so Council engineers could work out the necessity of road reconstruction in the area. You may have noticed some other local roads have been reconstructed in recent years. When road re...construction in the area is occurring, Council staff will advise residents with plenty of notice via letterbox drop of what is occurring, its likely impacts and measures to minimise disruption. If residents have further questions, they are welcome to ring me on 0418 809 364 or to post here. See more

23.01.2022 What is going on? The State Government is proposing to redevelop the land of the former Strathmont Centre, land to the north and east of James Nash House, the land of the former Oakden Older Person Mental Health Facility; and SAHMRI and TAFE land at Gilles Plains. There is no proposal to change the suburb name of Oakden. As part of this redevelopment, the State Government wishes to rezone this land (the planning jargon word for a rezoning is Development Plan Amendment, or DPA). The State Government's information is below, from the Community Drop In Session held on June 1st:

16.01.2022 The City of Port Adelaide Enfield Councillors will be hearing from Renewal SA and consultants Holmes Dyer tonight at a briefing session. I have been informed this briefing is more of a broad brush presentation about the outcomes of the public consultation and the general directions from here to the next stage, so please do not expect to know about specific street openings, for instance. If you wish to attend, the briefing will be held from 7pm to 8pm at the Port Adelaide Enfield Town Hall, 34 Nile Street, Port Adelaide. I will be posting the key points from the briefing session on this page when I get home, and in a flyer for delivery to be delivered soon.

10.01.2022 Comments on the proposed rezoning officially close TODAY. Please email your comments to [email protected] If you don't get them in today (I cannot find where they have indicated a time, so I guess 11.59pm is OK), then at least submit your comments over the weekend and ask that your submission is still considered. Legally, there is nothing to stop them accepting late submissions.... My submission includes the following: 1. The area directly to the north of the existing residential portion of Oakden is rezoned to match the existing zoning of the rest of the Oakden suburb, to assist the new area to integrate with the existing residences; 2. Residential areas to the north of the existing zoned area replicate the Suburban Neighbourhood Zone as approved for the Northfield Light Industrial DPA of February 2018 with the addition of key higher density areas directly abutting Grand Junction Road, the proposed new active sport facility and key stormwater retention and/or detention basins near Grand Junction Road; 3. Currently dead end streets in the north part of Oakden either remain dead end even if extended northwards do not meet up with the new north Oakden connector road or if they do, are heavily traffic calmed; 4. A new cricket and soccer facility with clubrooms is built in the new area; 5. As many large existing trees as possible are retained by using linear walking paths and large parks, with no 'pocket parks': 6. There are lights at the new northern collector road intersection with Sudholz Road; 7. There is acoustic treatment to the rear of existing homes in Benthall Avenue; 8. Hilltop Drive becomes a dead end from the east and south into Heritage College and the part of Hilltop Drive from Fosters Road meets the new northern connector road: 9. A public swimming pool is built in the north western corner of the Mixed Use Zone in partnership with the PAE Council; 10. A public transport route goes through the new north Oakden connector road. I welcome feedback and questions.

09.01.2022 The history so far... 1988 Then Labor State Government Health Minister Kym Mayes announces redevelopment of Agricultural land in the Northfield, Hillcrest and Gilles Plains areas for housing will commence shortly. It will be the biggest urban infill project in Australia at the time, and still is to this day. 1990 Health Minister Don Hopgood announces pending closure of Hillcrest Hospital and redevelopment of that land for housing, but questions hang over heritage listed build...ings on site. 1991 Announcement of IDSC's Strathmont Centre closure "within few years" by Minister Hopgood and redevelopment of that site for housing. 1993 Work begins on Regent Gardens redevelopment which becomes the major part of Oakden. 1999 Work begins on Northgate. 2007 Work begins on Lightsview 2019 State Liberal Government announces impending closure of Strathmont Centre as no residents are left on site. Land to be redeveloped along with the site of the former Older Persons Mental Health Facility on Fosters Road, infamously known as 'the Oakden Facility'. Also redevelopment announcement of former IMVS (now SAHMRI) land at Gilles Plains and closure of redevelopment of land at Gilles Plains TAFE. The latter two parcels are not expected to become available for about 10 years due to economic and contractual reasons. See more

07.01.2022 BREAKING NEWS!! After more than a year of no news, the State Government has just put its new plans on its website, as below. As part of this, I have also been informed that they plan to release almost half of the land for sale, possible as early as this year, as a trial run to see how the market takes the proposal. This is not a great sign for a masteplanned site, but it may not turn out to lead to a bad result, it all depends on what is being proposed, and most importantly, ...how it is developed and with which developer. We don't know that yet. I will provide a critique of this proposal after I have a chance to read it later in the weekend, and of course, I welcome any comments or questions from those who have read the proposal. https://renewalsa.sa.gov.au/projects/oakden-gilles-plains/ See more
