23.01.2022 Have you heard about the BEXSERO immunisation? Meningococcus is a bacteria that is likened to "the shark attack of the infectious world". It strikes with very little warning, death can occur and there is risk of losing a limb or two. Penicillin can fix it, but detecting it early is impossible. There are a 13 types with designated letters such as A, B, and C. Type B causes 80% of disease in Australia is responsible for nearly all the deaths. Type C has had an effective vacc...ine since 2003 and is covered through the childhood immunisation schedule. But type B has a large number of strains which has made vaccine development difficult until now. BEXSERO is the name given to the new vaccine and it covers around 80% of Meningococcus B strains in Australia and other parts of the World. It is not yet on the standard schedule but is recommended and can be obtained privately. Speak to your GP or Nurse for more information.

17.01.2022 Such a helpful article on tricky kids behaviour: To quote If youre still concerned after doing some reading, a visit to the GP is a good starting point. The GP can provide an initial assessment and refer the child and family to other professionals if additional assessment, treatment and support are necessary. Access to specialists, such as a paediatrician or psychiatrist, requires a GPs referral. Referrals are not required to visit a psychologist, but its best to visit the GP initially to help determine whether this is necessary. The GP can also refer to someone they highly recommend.

15.01.2022 Social Media and Depression- Is there a link? Is using social media making our kids unhappy? Evidence is mounting that there is a link between social media and depression. In several recent studies, teenage and young adult users who spend the most time on Instagram, Facebook and other platforms were shown to have a substantially (from 13 to 66 percent) higher rate of reported depression than those who spent the least time. Does that mean that Instagram and Facebook are actua...lly causing depression? These studies show a correlation, not causation. 05.01.2022 Immunisations really are safe! Dr Michaela Baulderstone at the Oakden Medical Centre is fully vaccinated herself and her children are fully vaccinated. She says it give her great peace of mind. "I can be confident my family can avoid serious preventable illness" "As a family, we spend time with small children all the time. Here is a little checklist to help you out: - Do they need comfort or attention? - Are they hungry? - Do they have a dirty nappy or an irr...itated nappy rash? - Do they need burping? - Are they uncomfortable? - Are they needing to suck something? e.g. dummy, teething ring - Are they overtired and are the conditions right for settling? e.g. dark room, wrapped etc - Could they be sick or have a fever? An unsettled, crying child can be very overwhelming. Don't forget that you might need to take a break too! You can leave them in a safe place and walk away or pass them over to someone else. To quote: "playing games for between 121 and 240 minutes per week was associated with better scores on Language and Literacy and Mathematical Thinking at 10 to 11 years of age. ... It just means offering a range of foods from the five food groups and it adds up to the best possible nutrition for your childs growth, development and learning. If your child is fussy about eating fruit and vegies, it doesnt mean they will never like them. 01.01.2022 It must be a full moon tonight - there were a fair few grocery shopping intolerant kids out today. Here are some tips to make the trip more pleasant for all involved: - "Look with your eyes, not your hands" can help to avoid the fruit pyramid rolling away. - Ask your toddler or pre-schooler their opinion. Which flavour yoghurt they would like and show them their options (it can still be the cheap brand only that's shown!) - Cut out pictures or write a 'kids shopping list' ...for your pre-schoolers/primary aged kids and they can check it off. - You can say 'no' nicely! 'I'm sorry, I know that looks good but maybe next time, it's not on our list today'. - When you reach your limit, don't shout and abuse your child - get down to their level and explain that 'Mummy is getting tired and I know you are too. If we smile nicely and behave - we can get home quicker'. - When we are beyond that point: walk away! The shopping can wait. REMEMBER: a child will behave only as well as they are treated!
