25.01.2022 Rat Bait Toxicity: We have seen an alarming number of patients with rat bait toxicity this week. We are well aware just how bad the season has been for mice at the moment, but it is important to remember that rat baits are dangerous and potentially deadly to anything that consumes them. Rat baits are typically flavoured to make them be attractive to rodents and this can also entice other animals to eat them. Most rat baits that are on the market are based on anticoagulants. ...If a pet is affected by an anticoagulant poison, the signs of the toxicity may not be evident for several days. The main signs of such toxicity relate to anaemia from blood loss, signs can include: Loss of appetite Weakness Pale gums Blood in urine or faeces Blood appearing in the saliva or vomit Blood appearing from the nose Breathlessness, from blood pooling in the chest cavity Primary Poisoning: is caused when a pet eats the rat bait directly. Secondary Poisoning: occurs when an animal eats a poisoned mouse/rat. Rat bait poisoning can be treated, but the chance of recovery depends on how severely the dog or cat is affected, the amount of bait consumed, and what kind of bait they have eaten. Seeking veterinary treatment as soon as possible is critical, with many needing prolonged treatment due to the lingering effects of the baits.

15.01.2022 Foal Immunoglobulin G (IgG) Testing: It’s always a very exciting moment when your foal finally first shows their face in the world. A foal is born with a functional immune system (if all is normal), but has a general absence of immunoglobulins to aid in the defense against infection. The foal acquires their initial immunoglobulin protection from the mare’s first milk and without receiving adequate levels this can lead to serious health problems for the foal. Foal Immunoglobul...in G (IgG) tests assess the adequacy of colostrum intake and antibody absorption. Foals should ideally be tested at 12-24 hours of age. IgG test categories: > 8g/L adequate passive transfer of immunity 4-8g/L Partial failure of passive transfer of immunity 0-4g/L Failure of passive transfer of immunity Failure or partial failure of immunity is a recognized risk factor for the development of septicaemia or joint infections. Knowing a foal’s IgG levels helps your vet decide whether further colostrum or a plasma transfusion is indicated. See more

08.01.2022 Sometimes you get those extra special patients that just stand out and this precious girl was certainly one of those. Being born nearly two weeks overdue, she came into us very weak, with her little organs fighting against her and not meeting those important first milestones that normal healthy foals should. Heading into the start of a weekend, the on call vet and nurse were about to spend a lot of hours around the clock with this very large foal to ensure she pulled through. Thankfully this girl was the biggest fighter we’ve seen in a long time and the cute cuddles we got from her all weekend made up for all the sleepless nights.

03.01.2022 Dr Katie making the most of some very cute Koala cuddles!

03.01.2022 Chiquita came into our equine hospital last week for an eye enucleation, after suffering an ongoing eye issue that unfortunately was not resolving (despite the owners very best efforts). Surgeries like these are obviously very daunting for owners, as they are unsure of how their horse will cope adjusting to day to day life with only one eye. Although eye enucleation is always a last resort, it is amazing to see how well horses adjust to only having one eye. In cases like this, we also generally always see an instant improvement in how bright the patient is, due to the fact that their eye was so painful for them prior to removal. These images speak for themselves, showing just how happy and comfortable Chiquita looks only a couple of days after surgery. We are very pleased to see you looking so happy again sweetheart!

02.01.2022 Friday Feel Good This precious little baby was not in a good way when she first presented at the equine hospital earlier this week, after being born approximately 3 weeks prematurely. Dr Kate and the team of nurses and vets worked tirelessly around the clock for the first 48 hours to help keep this sweet girl alive. We are very pleased that today after a few days in hospital, this little baby is now strong enough and well enough to head home.
