25.01.2022 Enjoy Charlis Laser session. Videos of the amazing Bruce and little hero Oodle coming soon.
24.01.2022 More inside scoop of what pets -inside vet clinics without owners- were doing. In this video, you get to see how dogs during lockdown have also missed having visitors, so when their vet appears around the corner, even vets wearing masks turned out to be beyond exciting for the pet. Enjoy, especially his big smile-head bob around 9 seconds in. The sound on the video is off so whilst it might look like he is barking, he is actually making the most adorable squeaks to try to get his vet to come closer.
23.01.2022 Vet Ventilators Call-up just now How that relates to tick paralysis and also information on Heartworm injections. Vet Hospitals and Specialist Vet Centres often have ventilators for use in ill dogs for many reasons. In Australia, the ventilators are most often used for severe tick paralysis dog cases.... Vets have just now been asked in Australia to make our ventilators available to the human hospitals. So-Tick Preventionif you never used it before on your pet and you are in a tick area-please consider- at least for the next 3months- using Tick Prevention in your dog so we keep pets and humans able to stay well. There is no issue with stocks of Bravecto so order, prepay and collect from your vet. At our clinic we are still discounting Seresto Tick collars down to $20 to help some owners cover their dog for several months for ticks until these current runs of crises ease off. For the general overal health of Cats that go outside and to keep them well so as to reduce demand on shared medical supplies: we suggest cat Bravecto. We have $30 off on some boxes of Bravecto spot-on Cat; 6.25-12.5kg (1 box):2.8-6.25kg (2 boxes). or $15 off one single vial of the 1.2 -2.8kg size. No rainchecks. Prepay over the phone where possible. See more
23.01.2022 New Pets: Walks & Parvo Virus. PLEASE DO NOT WALK YOUR NEW PUPPY UNLESS IT HAS COMPLETELY FINISHED ITS PUPPY VACCINE COURSE. I am seeing so many new puppies out and about being walked now as so many owners at home and free to walk them. Which is good on one level, but a Disaster on another if these tiny and young pups are not fully vaccinated. We do not need a Parvo epidemic on top of everything else especially given the PPE and Isolation facilities needed for Parvo on top o...f the Covid demand for PPE gear. If you know someone who has a new puppy-and especially if It is their first pet-please check-in with them that they know not to take the dog out. One tiny piece of contaminated faeces contacted out on a walk and you have a critically ill or dying pup in days. Breeders/Pet-shops/Rescue Societies: Please, please ensure your buyer knows to keep these pups in until their vet says clear to walk. You are the first point of contact, the-duty-of-care is on You the seller,to ensure these pets are kept safe from the start. If you can share this post to where you think it might just help keep a pup safe from an old and ever present foe that is Parvo virus please do so. Check the following post which will give dog owners some tips on Toys for chewing and training. See more

21.01.2022 Click-n-Collect App Order Promotion May to August. The owner of Kubra’ Steep is the Winner of our $100 clinic voucher. The prize is for using our OFVC App to pre-order food, pet supplies or medications. Many thanks to all our clients who, where they could, used the App during this period to pre-order items. Our phone lines at the time were not coping with the sheer volume of incoming calls, so using the App, rather than dropping in or phoning to contact us diverted some of t...he traffic via the App. We have now installed a new telephone exchange at the clinic in last couple of weeks, which seems to be fixing the many line issues we were having. To celebrate the new phone lines, we will run a combined promotion for September to Oct where all phoned-in orders or any App placed orders will go in a draw for a $50 clinic voucher. As the App is still our preferred method to pre-order, all App orders Sept/Oct will also get a free Educ Treat bag & Tennis Ball in addition to going in the $50 draw. See more
21.01.2022 Click & Collect App style As we slowly ease back on some of the restrictions at the clinic, we would like to still encourage clients where possible to pre-order using the App. This has been a wonderful way to keep organised, obey social distancing rules and keep the phone lines free. To encourage as many as would like (not in any way compulsory) to continue to order via our apps contact or order forms: All orders from via our App will go in a draw to win a $100 voucher. The ...$100 can for use against consults or examinations, vaccines/operations etc at the clinic. If additionally, anyone pays over the phone when the nurse rings to let them know their order is ready; if their name is drawn, they will win an extra $50 to use on any procedure or food, wormer, flea product (not medication) of their choosing from the clinic. You can download our app via the button on this page. many tx OFVC See more
21.01.2022 Non-essential Service Shut-down. As yet, we dont know if any or all vet set-ups will be shut down and to what degree, so we dont know where OF Vet Clinic sits in the ruling. Any appts booked this week for young puppies or other dogs/cats with illness etc will be brought forward to Monday/Tuesday. Our staff will contact those clients early tomorrow and organise a time even if we have to work longer hours. What we ask is that No-One turns up with the expectation of being se...en there-and-then or having an order put through quickly. We stopped walk-ins last week, this will be the same tomorrow. We ask you either Please Ring to place your order for food, tick products or medications etc so we can get them organised, we will then text you, you prepay, ring when you have arrived and we cold-drop it at front door of clinic when we text you to leave your car. You can download our App Now off this page and place orders via this Now which will be filled as they come in. Clients needs will be filled before non-clients so we ask our clients to get organised tomorrow until lunch time Tuesday: We can then help any non-clients with their needs at that point. See more
20.01.2022 Dear Clients. The clinic is now closed until this coming Tuesday. Our thanks to all our loyal, longstanding clients and to our many, many new clients, who have worked with us to help keep everyone safe and the clinic to remain open to assist with everyone’s pet’s needs. We are very grateful for the respect and the care shown to all of us by so many of you during this crazy year. Sadly, we have had a handful of clients either leave us, or equally be asked to leave by us, as ...they were unable to agree to the Covid-driven protocols we had in place. We understood this new way of operating is stressful, We too can find the new protocols inconvenient. We would not willingly chose to have to keep people outside for purchases nor only have one client inside per pet consult. However, so doing has protected many vet clinics from being shut down by a contamination from Covid affected people. Happily, these very safety protocols are also the reason why, we now have so many new clients from outside our normal area, travelling to our clinic with their pets. A special Thank-You to our own two vet nurses, Kallie and Victoria, without whom we could not have survived these past Covid crazy months. Both women worked selflessly to support Mark and myself to keep the clinic open and to stay Covid safe. We could not have done it without Kallie and Victoria and we are eternally grateful for their hard work and their smiles and good humour throughout it all. We welcomed back Chloe, who returned from maternity leave, some weeks ago. We had missed her ready smiles, hard work and kind spirit, so it is lovely to have her back on board. We were delighted to bring on another new full-time nurse-Alanis- into our Vet-team Family. Despite her young age, Alanis has a wise head on young shoulders, a wonderful dry sense of humour and a hard work-ethic that is a joy to behold and to work alongside. Thanks also to our Casuals, Lina and Bec, who despite short notice, have been so gracious at helping us keep on top of a heavy work-load. Merry Christmas to Everyone, From Aine, Mark, Kallie, Vic, Chloe, Alanis, Lina & Bec. ARH Emergency Vet Service is providing after-hour care until Tuesday 9am for many of the Vet Clinics in the area: Phone: (02) 4283 8432
20.01.2022 Veterinary Essential Service. It has been heart-warming and affirmative to see the vast majority of vets understand that the privilege to be classified as an Essential Service came with moral obligations for it Not to be Business as usual. Almost all Vet surgical theatres closed down early to just emergency-use only during Covid. This meant that the wearing of incredibly vital but increasingly rare PPE gear of full visors/gowns etc could be reserved for high-risk case ...work, but not for general around-clinic wear for all. That way, the staff stay safe; but we as a profession could then maximise the flow of much needed PPE to the frontline human doctors and nurses. Pet owners can play their part in this by not encouraging or applauding Vets who have continued to keep theatres open and operating as normal. Instead, maybe nicely and gently encourage those clinics to rethink their business model. These are not normal times and we All have to make sacrifices: especially where it means being then able to support frontline medical nurses and doctors. One way to minimise use of PPE is how several practices in our area provide afterhours. Over the Easter Break, Albion Park Vet Hospital will be providing emergency out-of-hours care for clients of many of the surrounding clinics. Doing so, reduces the vet use of PPE to just their staff over the Easter break; which is a win-win for all. Animals get seen, staff stay protected and what needs to be used is used with no wastage. For a heart-warming story about a Vets role in this disease: (and maybe the need for journalists to still have proof-readers, ie mis-spelling of veterinary), read about a Faroe vets approach to the pandemic. https://www.theguardian.com//vetinary-scientist-hailed-far
19.01.2022 Health Alert: Pet Food recall. Australian Vets have been asked to be on the alert for cases of Megaoesphagus over concerns certain foods 'may' be triggering this condition. We don't know too much at the moment other than one company: https://veganpet.com.au/ has launched a recall of some of their product. We don’t sell Vegan food so we have no information on whether this company has had cases of concern. We have not seen this condition thus far in any of our patients ... Whilst I give kudos to the Vegan company for doing a recall early on the piece. I would disagree with their recall advice to throw the food away. Certainly, stop feed the Vegan food immediately; but wrap it up airtight and put away from your pets. That way if an issue occurred with your pet, the Australian Petfast investigators then have samples of your pet's food to test. If everyone throws the food in the bin, it could make it harder to identify the problem ingredient or contaminant. Other than the alert from PetFAST about dogs suddenly starting to regurgitate their food and a possible, as yet unproven, link with some food, we know nothing else about this alert. As more information comes to hand, we will update this page. In the meantime, please share this alert. See more
19.01.2022 Change of Opening Hours. We have reduced down to a small team per shift, with only one nurse on for some of the days for the next TWO weeks. The Clinic hours will change as a result of that. As the hours may change again from week to week during Covid, always either check by phone or on our Facebook or Website Blog pages for our current times. Regardless, please ring before calling-in or dropping-past:not only because we need to minimize how long people are having to wait a...nd be away from their home, but because we may not be at the clinic when you do just drop past. Mon-Weds 9am-4pm, the phone will be answered directly. The phones have been very busy so if constantly engaged when you keep ringing, you can use the options advised for Thurs-Sat. 9am-4pm Thursdays, Friday & Saturday 9am-11am, the phone may be answered directly If however you are diverted to our answering machine: you can then use our Oak Flats Vet Clinic App Contact- Us form to send us your name, phone number, animals name and a brief explanation of the purpose of your call. You can also upload photos of the area of concern you have with your pet via the apps Pet Cam button. That will be the fastest way to contact us on those 3 days during those hours. The button to download the App is on this page. You can also contact us straight off the contact button on our clinics website. We aim to return your call promptly but if busy dealing with other patients, there may be a delay of a couple of hours before we contact you back. If the case is urgent or critical or after-hours or an emergency, Albion Pk Vet Hospital provides after-hours access for several of the vet clinics in our area. Please do not use this Facebook page to contact us or leave a message on the unmonitored answering machine to contact us: It could be a couple of days before we access those messages. The App and the website messages come through direct to us: Please use those when the phone option is not possible during our normal opening hours.
19.01.2022 There is now an updated post May 4th on this topic above. Health Alerts x 2 First: We are seeing a run of vomiting dogs in last 48hrs. The first Common shared area seems to be around Lakelands Oval Dapto.Try to avoid that oval for some days. However, If your dog has gone to this park in last 7 days, please Dont start walking your dog in a new area as that will only spread the problem. The dogs affected seem off-colour, not themselves, then start vomiting some hours later. As ...yet, none have needed hospitalisation, just some strong doggy anti-vomit medication and dietary support. (and NO, we dont think it has anything to do with Covid-19 etc).. Happy for this post to be shared if you know of anyone who uses this park area and/or whose dog appears off-colour this week..The alert is purely to help prevent as many pets from becoming unwell where possible. Update:01/05/2020 If you have more information on other dogs affected as in size, age and street living in and food fed, that would help greatly as well. You can report here or more privately via our oakflats app (button on this page) or ring the clinic on 0242565968 See more

17.01.2022 Hilarious Video from a dedicated member of our clinics fur-kid family. Whilst we are impressed with the enthusiasm Lisa showed in embracing our previous posts challenge to use the lock-down to give pet toys a good wash and inspection; it would seem the dogs themselves are less than impressed with the behaviour of their owners. Happy for any other owner to send in photos or videos of the challenge that we can share here.
16.01.2022 TOP TIPS TO HELP PREVENT FOOD POISONING AND SPOILAGE. Given the large number of pet food recalled this year; especially by BLACK HAWK (and some other companies who shared the same ingredient supplier), it is probably a good time to repost one of our previous articles on tips on pet food storage. These tips will help ensure that if you do have a recall on your pet food, you have the information to hand to help you identify if your food is affected. Even if you do not have a...ll the information on date and site of purchase, size of bag, batch number and date of expiry on a particular food, it is still worth emailing the company with your concern and also have your own vet fill out an AVA Petfast food injury repor In view of the large number of larger breed dogs in the last 8-12 weeks affected by a similar disease outbreak (that is different to the circulating vomiting bug), we would encourage the owners of those dogs to lodge these forms. If there is a contaminated ingredient out there in some of these Australian made dog foods then it needs to be found as soon as possible. The tips also ensure that after you return the contaminated food, there is no home cross-contamination between the old and the new food. Tips to Reduce Spoilage of Pet-Food 1. Always empty the bin out totally between one bag and the next. Do not just top-up the bin with new food as this: Increases your risk of storage mite infestation. Confuses any contamination claim. Increases the risk of mould and moisture. 2. Once empty, wash your container out well with some washing-up liquid and warm water. 3. Turn upside down to drain and place in SUNLIGHT for about 20 minutes. 4. Once the bin is dry and cool, only refill with the new food. 5. Big storage bin: Still keep the food in its Original bag in that bin. The bag helps preserve the food and if there is any issue with the food, you still have the barcode. 6. Write the date you opened the bag: either on the bag or on a sticker on the bin lid. 7. Do not use paper bags to store food, they absorb the oils and increase risk of food contamination. 8. Avoid the presence of rugs or cushions or beds where dry food is stored. 9. Make containers insect proof as storage mites use insects as a means to transport from one affected area to a clean area etc.
15.01.2022 Now we have Homework for Cat & Kitten owners. Full article can be read on Dr Aines blog on our website: https://www.oakflatsvet.com.au/homework-for-new-cat-or-kit/
15.01.2022 Toys. To keep your puppy entertained indoors, we have a series of 3 Blog posts on our website about safe toys, dangerous toys, educational toys etc which may be helpful to everyone. Try and have a dog toy box with 4 or 5 toys and only bring out 2 per day. We like to wash soft toys in toy wash in most washing machines but equally a good hand wash in dog shampoo, then rinsed or soaked for 20mins in 50:50 vinegar and water then dry on the line works a treat. If you have not wa...shed your adult dogs toys for a while, then now is the week to do this. At the same time check for any loose buttons or beads or strings appearing. Repair asap. There is an increasing number of reports of dogs getting into medical trouble from chewing on lots of childrens school items now being found at home during this home schooling explosion-erasers, artificial sweetener-laden sensory toys, craft and science projects: Make sure the 2 legged kids clean up after them to protect the 4-legged fur-kids etc https://www.oakflatsvet.com.au/hidden-danger-dog-toys/ https://www.oakflatsvet.com.au/dog-toys-summer-christmas-s/ https://www.oakflatsvet.com.au/a-day-in-the-life-of-a-resc/
14.01.2022 The best start to any work-day is when a client makes you smile the moment they appear. We all so enjoyed Nathans approach to mask wearing when he visited us yesterday.
14.01.2022 We thought pet owners might like to know how the fur-kids were handling the changes in vet visits during Covid Social Restrictions. The Pets ended up teaching Vets some valuable lessons on what pets would prefer as opposed to what humans thought the pets preferred... Hope the linked blog post also helps reassure any super- anxious owners that their pets were probably doing far better than the owner during these new style visits to the vet. Moving forward, veterinary visits should evolve to include a mix of the old and the new visit protocols, so that pets continue to benefit from lessons learnt. https://tinyurl.com/y7qbstha
13.01.2022 Health Alert: There appears to be a small outbreak of Canine Cough around the Barrack Heights area at the moment. In some of the cases, the pets vaccine was accidently overdue whilst the dogs still attended Doggy Day Care. Be alert to coughing signs in your dog and regardless, check your pets vaccine is current. The canine cough, CC, vaccines are not like Parvo vaccines, the CC vaccines are just like the human Whooping Cough vaccines -they dont stop you getting the illness..., they just stop you getting the more severe forms of the disease. However, if the Herd Immunity drops, such as in a doggy day care where several dogs might have lapsed vaccination for this respiratory vaccine, bigger outbreak and more severe illness can occur. It is a timely reminder for any Doggy Day Care to be checking the vaccine status of all attendees on an on-going monthly basis, so that overdue pets are identified early. If your dog is coughing, please ensure your vet clinic knows this before you arrive. Our clients have alerted us to this issue, so we could up the PPE we wear and also keep the infectious dogs outside still in their car etc. The upside of COVID is everyone is being cautious about all infections, so this outbreak should be contained faster than normal. Whatever you do, DO NOT PUT A MASK ON YOUR DOG. To do so is downright dangerous and very distressing for the pets. It is not cute, nor funny, a mask is just not acceptable ever on a pet, even for a photograph. Update 13/08/20: Mt Warrigal now showing some cases. Avoid walking your dog there if possible.
13.01.2022 Covid 19 Non-elective Procedures Update. Yesterday, Mark and I took the decision to halt all elective surgeries in solidarity with the human medical profession, which desperately needs to have maxiumum supplies of protective masks gloves etc available to them. We are heartened by the understanding and support of our clients in taking this decision. It is not one we took lightly, as it will severely impact on our business income and survival etc but it is a decision we have... no hesitation in taking. We are all in this together. Unless Everyone gets their head out of the sand and realise things have to change Everywhere for the good of Everyone, then life will take a lot longer to get back to normal With regards to vaccinations. we will be doing all kitten/puppy and 15 month of age vaccines as the need arises. Adult vaccines will be assessed on a case-by-case, client by client basis. Ill/lame/itchy animals will be seen as need arises-some will be done at the clinic, some by teleconferencing. I have been asked: 1)Why we have taken the options we have over the last week? 2)How come All other vets not doing this? 3)How come the caller has not read any information that supports the clinics decisions? The Answer is: We have always read extensively, have always kept ahead, have always been accused of knowing something someone else doesnt and hence attacked for being leaders, not sheep, so we are used to it. NOW we are so stretched and stressed we will Not be explaining ourselves anymore. We took so many calls yesterday, that by last night, we & our staff had no voices left and were all physically spent. We need to conserve supplies and that includes our voices and our own health. We are making judgements on what relates to our small business, not to some one elses small business in the same or completely different field. We took a huge number of call yesterday, we simply cannot continue to spend valuble time defending commonsense decisions. If you cant support us in trying to keep everyone safe and vet clinics open, we are happy for you to find a new vet and will email that vet your history file without any delay. If you want to know more;:Read this. https://www.smh.com.au//it-s-pure-greed-call-for-elective-
13.01.2022 Lessons from Luna: An excerpt from the log-book of A Day in the Life of a Rescued Dog. Mid-week seems a good day to post this general health reminder.
13.01.2022 Part 2: Preventing Covid-Contouring. Treats & Weight Gain. We are seeing what we now christened Covid Contouring as the shape of many animals expand from living alongside and co-sharing their human owners multiple daily treat snacking. ... Not good and especially not good when this unfit and now overweight dog is also taken for unaccustomed walks. I read elsewhere an excellent veterinary comment Exercise is for Fitness Food is for Fatness in pets. It takes an extraordinary amount of exercise for a pet to lose weight but only a tiny increase in food intake for a large weight gain. Many commercial treats are high fat, high preservative and high salt; some are 28X the recommended salt level. Many supermarket treats are product of China and have been the subject of previous food recalls. If you have to treat your pet either try: to take it from their daily food ration or use small amounts of fresh chopped carrot or apple (as long as your pet is not allergic) or EDUC treats. We love EDUCs low calorie, low allergen, low salt recipe and most dogs go nuts for them. To read more about EDUC, our previous article on our website will give you all the information you need: https://www.oakflatsvet.com.au/educ-dog-treats-rc-product-/
13.01.2022 How to ensure your Holidaying Pet gets to do an E.T. As Australians look to holiday more around Australia in coming months, chances are that means more pets will travel away on holiday with their owners. To ensure any pet who escapes whilst away on holiday gets to be found soon and to go home: make sure your pets details are up-to- date, not just the on the NSW Government registry, but also consider a second level of security by adding your pets detail to an Australia wide ...registry. Australia wide C.A.R has been around for many years and now for just $5, this Register gives that second level of protection to your pet. For the Stay-at-Home pet; make sure your pet-sitters have a HomealonePet card in their wallet, that can be used to contact you if the sitter falls ill. We have an Alert Card for Pet-sitters & owners not using NSW Trustee services (http://tinyurl.com/y75ge7xu) Free to download and use. We also have a free Poster to download and display in offices and notice boards. 13.01.2022 Dogs and Covid 19 Update. The current belief is that dogs are not actively infected. 12.01.2022 OFFER now closed 01/07.20 FREE: 3 single vials of 1.2-2.8kg Bravecto Cat.. First person in Today to our door to get them has them-no holds. Have to be collected and used Today as short-dated. They were packed away in the wrong place during Lockdown so not discovered until this week:-) It would be a waste to just throw away if someone could use them.
12.01.2022 Enjoy our video of Luna expressing how it feels to be out post lockdown. However, if anyone visiting the South coast over the coming weeks, there are 2 health issues fur-parents need to be aware of. 1)It would appear Nowra has had a flare-up of dog Parvo virus so be aware of that if you are travelling there. 2) Of some concern is that the paralysis tick is still managing to stay active. The risk is lower than summer time, but the risk is still there. If your pet is not normally on tick prevention, try to start at least 2-3 days before you go into tick areas. The products take some days to get to full protective level on your pets so start using tick prevention sooner rather than later.
12.01.2022 Covid Update. From today, Tuesday 21st July, we will still allow one owner in per appointment as long as that person arrives wearing either their own mask or an appropriate scarf covering their mouth and nose. Veterinary workplaces cannot maintain social distancing with owners, so masks are now compulsory during this current surge of cases and hotspots. No mask means only the pet comes inside. We will review the mask policy in 30 days.... Even if you have tested negative for Covid, we ask you not to book with the clinic for 21 days. If you are suffering from the rhinovirus cold or the flu currently doing the rounds of the area, please dont attend the clinic, We dont want to catch those condition either. Your pets needs can still be meet without the need for you to arrive at the clinic.

11.01.2022 Euthanasia. Clients the world over ask their Vet: "How will we know when it's time to stop?" Vets invariably & correctly reply; You will know." However, until the owner actually gets to that point of knowing, there is an awful lot of worrying and concern until that that moment of clarity and knowing is reached. At our clinic, we have a short Quality-of-Life Questionnaire that we share in-consult with clients, to help prepare the family.... Many fur-kid parents would like to have more advance warning of the sort of things they need to be alert to, when caring for a terminal or very elderly pet. As such, the University of Ohio has a free chart listing the sort of questions and checklists owners can answer, so as to help know in more detail ‘when’ they might need to let their pet pass-on. Death ends a life, not a Love. Euthanasia is the gift of a peaceful death, gifted by a loving owner to allow their pet to be finally free from physical or mental or emotional pain and suffering. https://vet.osu.edu//co/HonoringtheBond/HowDoIKnowWhen.pdf See more
10.01.2022 A big Thank-you to all our clients for their amazing support of our team during the ever-changing conditions Covid imposes on workplaces. This week we asked clients coming in to wear masks and almost everyone did so. The tiny number of clients who didnt realise or forgot their masks were also lovely and happy to have their pet come in whilst they stayed outside. Our surgical masks have surged in price and decreased in availability so we have to really restrict providing them to owners. However, Rathas Place caf (a help2help initiative) in Oak Flats had a stall out the front selling reusable masks, so consider supporting this worthwhile local Oak Flats charity fundraiser.
09.01.2022 Changing Covid Conditions. Following the information release today of an Al Park Rail business being visited by a Covid + person this week, we are now changing our clinic visit protocol. 09.01.2022 Laser Cases. We thought it would be enjoyable for everyone to see some videos of several of our patients reaping the benefits of laser therapy for a range of complaints. Our thanks to Oodle, Charly, Bruce, Mia, Digger and Louie for their co-operation and to their owners for their consent to show the footage etc. For the purposes of filming and for safety, the laser technique is modified slightly from how the laser is normally applied. The first video shows Louie, who experi...enced a rapid and severe onset of IVDD which left him quickly paralysed. The video shows his amazing recovery. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlmUSmPNNSs The second short video shows Digger, an 11-year-old dog terrier with a recent onset of not 1 but 2, torn cruciates. Digger presented struggling to walk, let alone leap into peoples laps as he loved to do. After the laser sessions, Digger is back enjoying walks and surprising people with his lap launches. (Mia the Rottie in this video has her own story and video coming up soon). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaf0dW4m8-s More videos to come tomorrow
08.01.2022 Canine Cough Update. 3 weeks ago, we alerted owners about a small number of dogs with Canine Cough/Kennel Cough. Sadly the number of cases continue to grow. We now ask all owners to confirm with their own Doggy Day Care that only vaccinated animals are attending. Owners also need to ask what happens if a vaccinated dog did start to cough. ... One of our clients reported that she only discovered when she picked her dog late in the evening that it had spent the day coughing! The owner was advised to take it home and 'try some honey.' Not only was this exhausting for the pet and then highly distressing for the owner; it meant a number of other dogs spent all day in the same shared airspace as the infectious coughing dog. It is not any Day Care Centre's fault to have a vaccinated dog attend and then start coughing. However, once it does start coughing, the centre must have a protocol in place to remove the ill animal from the general group and contact the owner asap. We suggest owners also confirm their Doggy Day Care, that only vaccinated dogs are allowed attend their sites. Canine cough in the vaccinated pet is rarely fatal but can still cause great discomfort to the pet. (and to the owners who get no sleep). In the unvaccinated or immunosuppressed pet, the condition can be fatal. We had an horrendous CC strain hit our area about 9 years ago and many elderly dogs died. For dogs with pre-existing coughs from heart or obesity and tracheal ring collapse or old dog allergic airway disease; please keep alert to any changes to their cough sound and frequency. It may well be the dog has now been exposed to and suffering from an infectious agent.
08.01.2022 Due to the extra-ordinary numbers, these past 10 days, of Illawarra clients suffering from Covid-ive Colds/Flu/Fever/Sore throats and given also a significant number of clients returning here from Hotspots, we and other Vet clinics have had to move some of our Vet visits back to a Teleconsult format. We do so because, it doesnt matter if the Cold or Flu, we catch from you is Covid -ive. If the Vet staff fall ill with any cold etc, then the clinic could close for up to 2 wee...ks. If that happens, then no animals will be able to see a Vet. One of the items Vets often need is a video of the pet walking in as straight as line as possible. This is so that the Vets can assess gait, head posture and a whole raft of other subtle signs. However, so many clients struggle to get a useable video of their pet walking towards them. Today, one of our clients aced this request. We are now sharing this simple short video with everyone to show exactly the type of footage needed to best help Vets help pets and owners. Thank you to everyone for being so willing to help all Vets stay open and stay safe, for the benefit of all the animals. See more
08.01.2022 Health Alert 2: As if we hadnt enough going-on with Covid 19 lockdowns and now vomiting dogs, Paralysis Ticks have decided to make some late and unwelcome appearances this last week. The current rains will only make the issue worse if we go back to warm days. Best check Now that your pets tick prevention is up to date. Regardless of what product you use for ticks, a good checking run-over of your hands on your pet to look for odd lumps or bumps is always worth doing.

If you experience any of these phone issues, for non-urgent cases or medication refills, food stock etc, you can use our [email protected] to send your request. It may take a couple of hours for us to reply to your email, so dont worry if you dont he...ar straight back. You can also use the App button on this Facebook page to access our vet clinic app. The app has a contact form tab with several pre-filled forms for food, medication and general orders. 07.01.2022 Huge thanks to everyone during the first phase of Covid for being so willing to help and support us to remain open, care for your pets but also keep our staff and your families safe. We are back doing routine consultations, vaccines, surgeries etc. Clients are invited back inside: 1 adult only per pet so that our small reception area can comply with social distancing rules. We may often still wear masks and are happy for clients to arrive wearing masks if they wish. For the... moment, we ask you wait in your car until called in; If for no other reason that Covid has really highlighted how all the pets are so less stressed waiting in the car, rather than in a vet reception area. Mums with babies & small children especially have found it far less stressful to be able to stay in the car. We offer this service moving forward, if anyone still wants to do this. Our hours may change from week to week for a little while yet, so check either our website page hours or phone for more info. Pre-ordering via our app is encouraged: Pre-orders via our app in May won a free stomach wormer. Orders in June will win a free EDUC treat bag per client. Cashless is still preferred where possible See more
07.01.2022 Alert: New Paralysis Ticks site around Oak Flats. Wentworth Cottage Park has been the site of recent tick paralysis cases for us. Whilst it is most unusual to get paralysis tick in our immediate area, this park and also the scrubland between New and Old Lake Entrance road have both been the source of the most recent paralysis tick cases for our clinic. There were also reports lasts summer of dogs getting paralysis ticks on local school grounds. Whilst the newer generation... tick products are safer and more effective, nothing replaces the need to do daily tick searches on pets during the tick season. Read your products instructions well. Some products must be given with food to work. All products have a delay time of anywhere from 8-72hours before they become protective. R See more

02.01.2022 Social Distancing includes your Cat and Dog. If your cat is one who strays from home daily, reconsider allowing this to happen. You dont know where or with whom you cat is spending its day. Whilst you may be not allowing your cat to lick your face or lie in your bed & whilst you may not be sick, the other unknowns in your cats life may well be allowing all of the above and may themselves be unwell. Equally, folks have less tolerance in general now for unknowns entering t...heir zone, so another reason to keep your cat home. Dogs-aside from most folks not liking when you dog runs at them even in play-a fall is a fall, it would be even more sensible to keep your dog on a lead beside you and distant from passers-by. As we are seeing on TV and knowing personally, people of all ages and backgrounds are lying or ignoring their risk factors for Covid. Keep your dog safe by keeping them back from others. Keep your cats safe by keeping them contained within your yard. If you yourself are unwell, you need to separate yourself as much as possible from your pet and practice good handwashing and other hygiene measures. We understand this information is different and people can ask questions. We do not mind. If you are worried, ask away. Our aim is to make everyone as upskilled and on topic as possible. Please be kind to each other. All we are asking is for you to keep your animals home safe with you, here in Australia, under the conditions in which We keep our pets. Your pets are part of your family, you should know where they have been and with whom they have been in contact. That is just plain commonsense! Any poster, but particularly pet owners resident overseas, should refrain from making sensationalist and fear-mongering statements inappropriate to Australian conditions-conditions about which they know nothing. Knowing the whereabouts of your fur-kids during this pandemic is basic commonsense. It beggars belief that anyone could find that advice an excuse to be abusive.
01.01.2022 Click-n-Collect App Order Promotion May to August. The owner of Kubra Steep is the Winner of our $100 clinic voucher. See more
01.01.2022 Update May 6th. Thank you so much to everyone who has supplied information. However, due to the tidal wave of replies and phone calls we have to suspend taking any more information for the moment. Our phone line has become so overloaded that our own clients cant access us for their animals care. The sheer volume of incoming emails and Facebook questions leaves not time to do anything else so any new questions will not now be answered What we know so far in this evolving si...Continue reading
01.01.2022 Reducing the impact on dogs co-sharing lockdown with their owners: Repetitive injury & Obesity. Currently most dogs are in a very happy mental state as they have their owners home 24/7. Returning to work however means all owners should start gradually preparing their pets to cope with a return to separation. We will offer some tips later on that topic, but for now there are a couple of immediate concerns we need to address. Part 1: Walks... Normally not an issue of concern. However, we are seeing an increase in the number of pets, for whom all these new, unprepared-for regular and multiple daily walks are triggering a worsening of a pre-existing injury or heart or disc problem, that had gone undetected up to now. Always watch your dog carefully on any walk. If they start to slow down or drop behind you on the walk, when normally beside or in front of you-then take note. Watch how your dog is walking, their breathing rate and general level of happiness or unhappiness. There is an hilarious video of a Queensland Labrador who protests walking by lying down and playing dead and refusing to budge. By happenstance the other day, a labradoodle walking along Shellharbour beach cycleway did exactly the same going-on strike action. For reasons best known only to the dog, they had had enough and wanted to go home. For some normally anxious dogs, there are simply too many dogs and people out and about at the moment. Going for their walk sees them flooded with a barrage of events that terrify them. If this is your dog, it is perfectly ok not to walk them as much, if at all, until life is calmer for that dog. Part 2 on Treats and Obesity will follow shortly.
01.01.2022 Shell Cove. As one would expect, snakes now very active there. However, some are coming up close to backyards and dog-runs so keep a sensible eye out. If you have a snake bite after hours, ARH Emergency Vets Wollongong which is open & fully staffed each night from 6pm-8am, plus has vet staff on-site 24hrs, all-weekend and Public holidays, will have anti-venom and ventilators etc on-hand.
01.01.2022 Change of Service Conditions at OFVET Clinic. Dear Clients. Sadly, we now have to keep the front door of the clinic shut across, even when we are working in-sight, inside the building when you arrive. We have now moved to do All communications by phone. That applies to even picking up your pets medications....Continue reading
