24.01.2022 Oak Lodge was one of the destinations on a walking tour called ‘Drunk Richmond’, led by James Parker and Alan Townsend today.

23.01.2022 Richmond boasts Australia’s oldest continuously used bridge which looks stunning at any time of the day. Why not come out and have a look? While you’re here, pop in to Oak Lodge at 18 Bridge Street. You can have a sticky beak inside one of Richmond’s equally boastworthy Georgian mansions for an insight into times gone by.

22.01.2022 Richmond has strong links to Tasmanian-born aviator, Harold Gatty, who was a household name in Australia in the 1930s. Harold’s father, James Gatty, was the Council Clerk for the Municipality of Richmond from 1923 until 1939 a period which covered all of Harold’s famous flights. He would often visit his family in Richmond and two of his sons attended the local St John’s School for a number of years when in the care of James and his wife. We have published the rest of this article on the website at coalriverhistory.org if you are interested in reading more. You will find the pictured memorial at Oatlands and the house opposite st Luke's Church in Richmond.

17.01.2022 Today we enjoyed an excursion to Kempton to look at the Council Chambers, Glebe House and St Mary's Anglican Cemetery. Alan Townsend and Alex Green provided informed and interesting commentary. Our visit was topped off with a tasty lunch at Dysart House, aka the Old Kempton Distillery. It was a thoroughly enjoyable outing and thanks must go to Lois Green, Alex Green and Alan Townsend, as well as John the bus driver for their efforts in making this happen.

09.01.2022 Does anyone know anything about this lady, Mrs Quinn, who died at Colebrook in 1908? According to the Tasmanian Mail, she was an old colonist. Even a first name would be helpful.

09.01.2022 A selection of wallpaper, walls and windows from today's excursion - and a lovely surprise in the garden if you look closely.

07.01.2022 From 1855 until 1872: Reverend David Galer, rector of St. Luke’s, lived at Oak Lodge. On 27 November 1859 he was riding to Jerusalem when he came across something completely unexpected. From the 'Hobart Town Daily Mercury', Tues 6 December 1859, p. 2-3: Rev. David Galer, sworn, gave his evidence as follows - On Sunday afternoon,Nov. 27th, I was proceeding to Jerusalem to perform Divine Service. At a short distance from Campania Creek and just rising the hill in the direction... of Mr. Kearney's, I observed the form of a man lying among some wattle by the side of the road. This was at 25 minutes past 1 o'clock. I thought it was some one asleep. And as my usual practice in such cases is to ascertain that nothing is the matter, I looked intently at the object as I passed. When very nearly passed I was turning my horse to approach the man, when I saw the face covered with blood; my first thought was that the man had been seriously injured in a fight, but on getting close, the fearful fact of the man having been murdered was evident. The following link takes you to the inquest and the details are not for the squeamish. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/3259570

07.01.2022 Below is an interesting thread that begins with a portrait of Winston Churchill Simmons, the Commonwealth of Australia's longest-serving council warden. At Oak Lodge there is a copy of the beautifully written and illustrated thank you letter that he received upon retirement. You can find further details about the man in the thread shared below.
