24.01.2022 PODCAST ~ The Essential Guide to Regional PR with Odette & Co It’s easy to get dazzled by major media outlets and their numbers. Often, regional media is the only place to find these stories. That means it can be a goldmine for niche angles or hyper-local stories. How do you maximise your chances of coverage in regional outlets?... Odette Barry covers different parts of regional media on the Hack Your Own PR podcast. EP 12 ~ Georgie Robertson of The Regional PR Co talking how to secure coverage. EP 13 ~ Kimberley Furness of OAK Magazine talking the next wave of regional media. EP 14 ~ Nine journalist Sarah Lawrence on the ins and outs of regional TV news. Take a listen and let me know what you think. https://podcasts.apple.com//meet-new-face-re/id1503118547

20.01.2022 THE BUSH BOUTIQUE ~ With the cancellation of trade fairs Australia-wide, bush-based businesses are creating their own opportunities to grow their stockist base coming into Christmas. Founded by NSW business woman Dannielle Maere, The Bush Boutique is an online collective of bush-based businesses offering a range of wholesale opportunities for retail store owners. "Due to COVID, we had to pivot quite quickly to ensure our online presence supported us during... the nation-wide shutdown. In less than a month, more than 30 businesses have signed up to The Bush Boutique. The Bush Boutique are hosting a virtual trade fair from August 10 - 17 2020. 19.01.2022 Natalie Frankie says this best... "When Taylor Swift drops a new album we share her music. When Kylie launches a lip kit we buy it. When Kanye goes gospel we all talk about it. So how come, when the people we love launch a business or release a new product or create incredible content most people cannot be bothered to support them?... WE MUST RALLY BEHIND SMALL BUSINESS. Remember: It is absolutely free to be an advocate for a friend who is running a small business. And if you're willing to do it for a celebrity, shouldn't you also do it for the entrepreneurs and creatives in your real life?" I couldn't have said it any better - or articulate it in a way that didn't seem like I was ranting! So go spend a couple of minutes liking your friend's last three business posts and, if you’re on Instagram, share one to Stories (bonus points if you amplify it with a Location sticker, Support Small Business sticker or @mention your local tourism account) See more

14.01.2022 NEW PODCAST EPISODE Kimberley Furness has always known words are her thing. What she didn't know was the pathway she would follow to become a creator and editor of her own magazine. While starting a print magazine might seem like too daunting of a quest to attempt, Kimberley launched OAK Magazine in just six weeks and now, three years later, represents an exciting new chapter for regional media in this country. Kimberley is passionate about women in bus...iness, especially in rural and regional Australia, and she loves hearing and sharing their stories. Her mantra of connection, collaboration and community is testament to this. As a mother of four, life is busy but Kimberley has learnt that making time for her passions means she is a happier person all round. Little did she know this is making her a role model for the next generation who are learning from her actions that women are strong, resilient and creative. Kimberley shares with us her business journey from journalist to beauty therapist to business owner, overcoming barriers in the workplace, the joy that comes from finding your community and so much more. Thank you to this episode's guest host Mardi Holland, a friend in every sense of the word. Listen to this episode on your favourite podcast app - https://afriendofmine.captivate.fm/listen

14.01.2022 A little story about the impact an advert in OAK Magazine had on me. Kimberley Jo from BOOB LOOB Breast Cancer Awareness Self-Check Shower Gel advertised in Issue 7 and shared the story behind her brand on our blog. Reading it gave me that little nudge to check my breasts. At 38, I've never put too much thought into doing a self check... even though my mum is a breast cancer survivor. Yes, you can insert an eye roll.... Earlier this year, I found a lump, the size of a pea, in my right breast. I sat on the discovery for quite a few weeks... months by the time I got to the doctor. I first asked Dr Google for answers, secretly hoping I was overreacting. Google was useless and confusing. My anxiety got the better of me and I finally opened up to my husband and family (mum and nan) who, of course, all told me to book an appointment asap. I've since had an ultrasound, a mammogram and now due for a fine needle aspiration biopsy. At the moment, I'm told there is nothing too concerning about the lumps (we found one in the other breast) and the biopsy will provide further clarification and a baseline for us to measure in the future. I can keep you up to speed with my journey, although updates will be few and far between - like any working mum, I've formed a terrible habit of putting my own health at the bottom of the priority list. (I'm working hard to break this habit!) At some point, we also need to talk about the financial cost. You literally cannot afford to be sick. These tests really add up when you are under 40 and cannot access them for free through Breastscreen. I really worry about how many women might be putting it off because of their financial situation. The costs are even higher for those who need to travel to access health care services. But what I really want to highlight today is how important it is to get to know your normal. BOOB LOOB encourages women to perform breast checks that are easy and effortless. Know your breasts, know their 'normal', and stay on top of breast health. Thank you Jo for sharing your story and developing a product which promotes early detection and how vital it is to get to this disease as early as possible and prevent its spread. I have three bottles of BOOB LOOB I'd like to gift to our OAK community. Send me a private message through FB or Instagram if you are interested. You can also visit Jo's website ~ https://boob-loob.com/

13.01.2022 If you want someone to succeed, be a part of their success. Today is Women’s Entrepreneurship Day. Tag your favourite local lady biz or be your own cheerleader.... I absolutely love discovering new female founded businesses in rural and regional Australia. (I actually go and check out all the accounts you tag and give them some FB/Insta love. It’s a small gesture but I know how important a like, comment or share is for our online presence.) Kimberley See more

12.01.2022 Instagram trends always start somewhere. #challengeaccepted is a little more than just a black and white selfie with a positive message about female empowerment and friendship. It is a very serious gesture of defiance in support of Turkish women who are fed up by the lack of accountability for perpetrators.

07.01.2022 Meet Denise + Janeen ~ WholeBrain Bendigo Denise Smith founded WholeBrain after realising there wasn’t a program available to support children who, like her own, are right-brain learners. Denise says her biggest achievement is still being in business after 18 years.... "Getting to this point, especially being so close to publishing our books, has been a result of years of hard work and persistence. Our program is so unique and was built from listening, watching and learning from our children and students. There was no ‘how-to’ guide to follow." 05.01.2022 Meet Angela Mitten, counsellor and consultant at Chrysalis Counselling & Consultancy. As a teacher, Angela supported many children and families. When it came time for a career change, she realised the empathy and compassion she had for those students and families who were struggling, was a key strength. "I'd faced many of my own challenges in juggling motherhood, relationships, mental health issues and work/life balance," says Angela.... "While I loved my career in education, I also knew that I needed a change. Although I had considered many options, I kept coming back to counselling as being what I really wanted to do. I wanted to deepen my ability to support people through difficult times as I had been supported." Angela went back to study and now offers therapeutic counselling services through her business Chrysalis Counselling in Bendigo. Angela shares with us the journey of starting a business, the impact of COVID-19, her favourite works tools, imposter syndrome and a strategy called 'Dropping Anchor'. "Dropping anchor is the most powerful strategy I teach to clients. We cannot always make the storm go away, but we can drop anchor to steady ourselves while the stormy seas rage around us." 04.01.2022 I pressed pause on OAK during the first lockdown. Restrictions made it unsafe to send out photographers and I had four little ones to homeschool. Lockdown 2.0? No more pausing. Time to press PLAY! We've locked in another AMAZING front cover queen! ... There is still room for a story or two but more importantly we have a number of advertising options available to keep your business front of mind. I want to ask you... Does the CEO of Instagram or Facebook do a happy dance when you set up an ad with them? Unlikely. Will they send you a nice email to say thank you and answer any questions on how you can best make it work? Doubt it. Will they recommend your brand to a family, friend or stranger? No. Would it make you feel better working with another small business who really appreciates your support and in turn will support you? That has to be a YES! I do a happy dance when you book an ad. I'm always here to answer your questions and I can't help but share my knowledge and connections to help grow your business. It's also not uncommon for me to book a treatment or purchase a product from your business as a way of paying it forward. I’m not trying to pressure you to book your next set of advertising with OAK but I’m encouraging you to find a community or platform that is best suited to your small business... and the survival of regional and rural businesses. Surely we know by now, how important it is to build our own local ecosystem which supports our families and community in return. If you are interested in advertising with OAK and becoming part of our community, get in touch via email [email protected] Issue 8 will be released late September/early October. Kimberley, Small Business Owner See more

01.01.2022 WOMEN OF THE VINE ~ Some would say Brigitte Rodda has the ultimate job - her day entails making and tasting wine with the Grampians as a backdrop. Brigitte works at Best's Wines - Great Western, one of the best hidden gems of the Grampians wine region. Established in 1866, it is one of the oldest wineries in Australia. While Australian female winemakers are not in the majority in the industry (1 in 10 winemakers and grape-growers are women), they are leadi...ng the way in innovation and sustainability. Brigitte believes winemaking is the perfect marriage of science and creativity and is community to crafting delicious wines people can enjoy. "Winemaking is such a satisfying and rewarding career choice. It's taken me around the world and back again. Plus there is lots of support from other women in the industry, so reach out and get involved." You can read Brigitte's story, including her wine recommendations, in the latest issue of OAK Magazine. https://www.oakmagazine.com.au/products/oak-magazine-issue-8
