01.01.2022 What is that hard yellowish deposit that builds on teeth over-time? This hard deposit we call tartar or calculus. It comes from that soft sticky film called plaque, that consistently and constantly forms on the teeth, that over a period of time, calcifies and forms this hard deposit. The tartar sets hard and cannot be removed by a toothbrush. It is stuck strongly to the tooth and needs to be professionally removed by a dentist or hygienist.... The concern with the tartar forming and being stuck for periods of time is that it is very porous, just like chalk. The pores in the tartar allow bugs or bacteria to harbor within and because it forms in and around the gums it particularly affects the gums. This irritation is caused by a bacterial infection, which is the foundation of gum disease, gingivitis or periodontitis. Just like a left wood splinter irritates the skin. The tartar filled with bacteria irritates the gum. However, unlike the wood splinter that causes enough irritation that draws your attention to its exact location. Gum irritation often causes no obvious signs or symptoms and patients are often surprised to hear that this is happening when diagnosed in the dental examination. As seen in this post image the gum is swollen. Check out the triangle of gum coming up between the teeth. If this were a healthy gum, it would be flat, sharp, light pink in colour, tight and pointed. In this image you can see the swelling in the width and the peak of the gum triangle. The gum appears to be pulling away from the tooth, almost giving it a floppy appearance. This is a direct result of the bodies immune system reacting to the bacterial infection. The only way to remove the infection and irritation is to have the tartar professionally regularly removed. Just as you would remove the wood splinter from the skin and allow the skin to heal. The tartar needs to be removed to allow the gums to heal and tighten back around the tooth.
