20.01.2022 Photo credit to Haldon Animal Hospital. For simplification purposes these are generalizations of some breeds not show, sport or performance dogs. This to help ...the average pet owner to see where their dog may fit in the spectrum. Many pet owners don’t understand what an over or under weight dog is. We need to educate on what it is and how dangerous it can be. Keep in mind that every breed is different, so you can’t judge all dogs the same. What’s pet weight for a lab is obese for a greyhound. All medical issues should be addressed first and weight loss should be supervised by your vet. The terms are just generalized descriptions so lean, conditioned, well muscled and fit could mean the same thing to different folks. Captions on photos: Skinny this is a dog that needs serious help. All the ribs, spine and hip bones are exposed. The texture and shine of their coat is rough and dull and the dog is just generally depressed. Needs immediate veterinary help. Malnourished/Thin These dogs have some ribs showing and their coat texture/gloss is usually dull. This dog’s diet needs to be changed to improve his coat and to gain some weight. Needs veterinary help. Fit These dogs often get mistaken for being too skinny, but you will note their coat is glossy and they have a lot of muscle tone. Think of them as gym addicts. Some dogs just run and play more than others and tend to prefer play to food. If you have a fit dog and you are concerned about their weight, change his food to advanced fitness/working dog brands of food. Consult your vet to make sure they are still in prime health. Ideal: This dog is neither fit nor pet weight. Ribs are easily felt (some breeds even seen), but usually not visible. The dog has good muscle percentage and low fat. Do this test: flatten your hand and feel over the back of your knuckles, they are easily felt, but with a layer of skin and they’re not showing, this is what it should feel like if you feel over your dog’s ribs. Pet Weight: This is just over ideal, but still not overweight. Dog’s muscles are visible and ribs are still felt, but not visible. This is a fine line that should be kept under control, because the dog can easily become overweight. Overweight: If you flatten your hand like with the ideal test, you must now feel over the bottom of your hand, if your dog’s ribs feel like that, it’s overweight! If you first need to feel through a layer of fat to feel the ribs, or worse, you can’t feel them easily at all. Try to either cut back on their food (less treats too!) and give them regular exercise. A dog is an instinctual eater and will always look hungry and beg for food, don’t fall for their puppy eyes. Dogs enjoy walks a lot more as they receive a lot more stimulation by sniffing, walking and just experiencing new surroundings. So whenever you feel sorry for not giving them that extra treat, rather take them for a walk, they will thank you more. Obese: Consult a vet regarding diet foods or meal times and sizes. Obese dogs don’t live long or happy lives. An obese dog is just as at risk as a skinny dog, but because society seems more okay with obese dogs, it’s somehow not seen as wrong. Start slow with exercise, short walks or even swimming (with assistance so they don’t sink) as it’s not as hard on their joints. Be sure to not over exercise as obese dogs are prone to heart problems. Over time make the walks and swims longer while also feeding less and less. Over 58% of dogs are obese, yet 78% of dog owners deny that their dogs are obese. This is a serious problem that can lead to heart failure, diabetes, joint failure and many more conditions that can cost your dog’s life! Overfeeding can kill your pet, think before you give them treats or the type of treats, more food or table food. Rather take them for a walk, swim or run. A healthy weight dog can live 3 yrs longer than an obese dog. You wouldn’t let them starve to death, so why overfeed them to death?

20.01.2022 It’s been a Schnauzer kind of week 10 weeks til Christmas Have you booked your appointment yet?

18.01.2022 Back in the salon at 8.30 this morning. Shavon & Carly are short staffed today, so wait times may be a little longer than we’d like. Will get back to all our Voicemails, Texts & Inbox’s as soon as we can.

17.01.2022 When we first met Baxter, he was very anxious throughout the grooming process. So much so, that we couldn’t touch his face or feet without him biting, due to his anxiety and fear. Today, after weeks of building a groomer/client relationship, we completed his first full haircut, without any problems at all! So proud of how far this little boy has come, and how precious does he look?!?

16.01.2022 Introducing - Shavon Hey guys! I’m the new head honcho here at CCPG, and I know how hard it is to trust anyone new with your fur babes so I thought I’...d do a quick intro so you know who you’re leaving your kiddies with. I’ve been in the industry for 8+ years now, as well as having a lifelong background in dogs & everything to do with them! (Parents were those crazy German Shepherd types & my mum is one of the best groomers I know!) I’ve worked alongside & trained under some of Australia’s best groomers, which has given me the skills and confidence to successfully groom, run & manage my first salon baby, Oasis Pet Styling- Singleton & now, this new venture! During my time on the tools, I’ve scored myself qualifications/knowledge in Hand-scissoring & Breed Specific grooming, Dog Behaviour & Handling, Skin & Shampoo science, as well as a couple of others. I’m a fur mama myself, to 3 little devils - Panther the Staffy, Mani the Toy Poodle, & Opie the Rottweiler. Clearly I have no preference or bias when it comes to breeds & sizes of dogs I’m also a human mama to a beautiful 14 month old boy, Roman, with a second due in early March. I’ve got some amazing things planned for CCPG, in the New Year, but upholding Sonya’s love & care for your pets is my #1 priority. At this stage, my phone & this Facebook is full of messages of people wanting appointments, which I’m doing my best to get back to, between grooming, kids and life! The bad news is, I’m running out of appointments for December, so if you haven’t booked, there’s a fair chance you won’t get an app til the New Year. As with everything new, I am expecting some teething issues, so your patience will be greatly appreciated during the month of December. I’m looking forward to meeting everyone soon & can’t wait to get to know you & all your fur babes! If you have any questions about the change over, feel free to shoot me a message & I’ll get back to you as soon as I possibly can. Big love Shavon

15.01.2022 Hey Fam, We totally understand sometimes life happens, and somethings cannot be controlled, however, we do have limited appointments available & late cancellations/no shows severely impacted our Small Business and seem to be becoming quite common! Everyone gets a confirmation message the day before their appointment, so realistically, there should be no reason we don’t know in advance if you can’t make it (circumstantial, obviously). ... From here on in, we will be treating unconfirmed appointments as cancellations, so please make a point to confirm. If you’re a repeat offender, we’re going to be a lot less lenient with additional fees & charges, than what we would for a ‘one off’. We are always more than happy to help reschedule a time if you can’t make it, just give us a call or send us a message.

13.01.2022 You have the best job ever, you get to play with dogs all day Probably one of the most popular statements we hear, and while we’re not going to disagree th...at we’ve got the best job ever, we’re going to disagree that we get to play with dogs all day (unless we’re in daycare, that’s a whole new level of ‘best job!’) Contrary to popular belief, we do actually work. And we work hard! Grooming is a REAL job. We spend weeks, months & year’s continuously training to do what we do & while there aren’t actually any legal requirements for us to do so, why would we want to work in a job that we have zero understanding of? Working WITH dogs, and working ON dogs - 2 completely different things. There’s a lot of s**t we put up with (literally & figuratively ). Ever tried to brush your dog, only to realise that they hate it & you can’t do it? Attempted to bath your dog/cat and ended up with claw marks up your arms & face? Or tried to clip a nail, only to get bitten? Tried to cut a matt out & cut a chunk of skin out instead? We’ve seen it, and heard it all before - This is why there’s professionals! Understanding dog behaviour (when you’re dogs just chucking a tantrum, or when they’re genuinely terrified), is probably one of the most important parts of our job - every fur babe is an individual & should be treated like one. Putting scissors sharper than a kitchen knife, near eyeballs is a scary thing, so we need to make sure we can read the dog & predict it’s behaviour correctly. Understanding breeds, and their skin/hair/trims is the second most important part of our job - think of allll the breeds, and mixed breeds, in the world, and then think about how they’re supposed to be trimmed? Probably not something everyone knows of the top of their head, right? Understanding owners - this one is the trickiest of them all! Deciphering what a ‘puppy cut’ is to someone, or what ‘leave an inch’ (on a dog with half an inch worth of hair) means, is why being properly trained is soooo important! We can generally work out a game plan that suits both you & the dog, based on the info you’ve given us. So what’s the point of this post? To give you an insight of why we do what we do, and why we’re good at it! And it’s definitely not because we sit on the floor and play with puppies all day (although, occasionally, it’s a definite positive!) It’s training, It’s understanding, It’s making mistakes, it’s crying because an owner wasn’t happy, It’s more training, It’s laughing at the things you can’t fix It’s making a dog look & feel pretty It’s getting in trouble for getting frustrated It’s learning to be patient and so much more. Do your research on your Groomer - your dog is probably more important to you than your partner (sorry, not sorry ), so you need to make sure they’re in capable hands - and the process isn’t taking all day, in an environment that’s not comfortable from the get go! : by Joshua Hogan Photography during our training day in the salon last week.
