06.01.2022 Farewell Oatley Cellars (1980-2020) by Donna Pickering Sadly this week we shut the doors on Oatley Cellars and 40 years of servicing the local community, at 18...A Letitia St Oatley. Oatley Cellars for us was started on the 20th September 1980, when Dad went into the licensing court to get the licence approved. Dad had a dream of running his own business and decided to combine that with his love of wine, to support his family. Dad had such a passion and love of wine, he had an exceptional palate, that he could pick the grape, region and year of a wine, and had such extensive wine knowledge. My love of wine started at an early age, when I used to conduct wine tastings at the back of the shop and sneakily tried them too. I think Mum and Dad realised this when for my 6th birthday they asked what I wanted and I replied that I wanted a particular bottle of Lambrusco, so began my love of wine. Once I was old enough I started learning about wine, and I developed my own passion for it. In later years this would help continue the Oatley Cellars business as I stepped in to help both Mum and Dad run the shop. Dad taught me a lot about running a successful independent liquor store, that I will always remember. I have used this knowledge for many years now and will continue to do so in the years to come. We have many people to thank for helping us run Oatley Cellars, we could not have done it without the love and support of all of them. We would especially like to thank our dear friend Joan, who was also our landlord. Joan was with us for 40 years, she always looked out for us and did the right thing by us. Truthfully I think she would have sold the property a long time ago if it wasn’t for the friendship we had and we are truly thankful for this. We have a lot of good times and wonderful memories with her, over the life of Oatley Cellars. Tom, you were there from the start and have helped us so much over the years, giving up time with your family. I’m sure you have a lot of wonderful memories. Customers would often set their watch by you arriving at 11:07 every Sunday! Liz, you have helped us over 17 years, you have fitted in so well it seems longer, your enthusiasm and hard working nature have been invaluable. Whenever we needed your help (especially when Dad was sick) you would always drop everything to be there for us. We cannot thank you enough. Clem, you always helped us behind the scenes, which can be the hardest job of all. Our morning teas were informative, lengthy and we miss our chats. Andrew, you started young, I remember you always wanted to help behind the counter, then you were finally old enough to do so! You helped us on Friday and Saturday nights for many years. Wayne, you always greeted every customer warmly. You have been there for 8 years and have been a great help at the counter. We appreciate all you have done. Miles, I’ll never forget how shocked you were when you saw the actual amount of work we did behind the scenes, and I’m also glad you realised that putting the wines in the fridge in alphabetical order was never going to work! Jean & Neta, you always stepped up and helped whenever we asked, and we appreciate all the running around you did picking up what we needed, and for giving us some delicious treats along the way! Despite your lack of wine knowledge you never failed in helping customers. Thong and Cam, you have always been there willing to offer us sound advice. We have really appreciated your guidance. We treasure your friendship. Jo, you have helped us a lot over the years and especially in the last 12 plus months, with all your advice, and just support of all we do, and helping us in the technical side of the business especially, we appreciate all you have done, and we couldn’t have done it without you. We also thank all the other people who have helped out in the shop over the years Grandpa, Anthony Switzer, Greg McCarthy, Julie and Ern Francis, Jack Scott, Christine North, Nicole Hellyer and Bill Christopher. Mostly we could not have done this without the support of our lovely customers. We have a lot of wonderful memories serving you all and the Oatley community, and there are a lot of crazy stories we take with us! Seriously our customers have made the business, we couldn’t have survived without you all, we love what we do and you all made it so very easy to do. We have loved every minute and really do cherish all the wonderful memories we have with you all and especially all the many friendships we have gained over the years. Lastly to Mum, who has been there working hard for 40 years. I couldn’t think of anyone better than sharing all these wonderful memories with and I hope you enjoy your semi -retirement. With a 40 year run with Oatley Cellars we can be nothing but proud of what we have achieved. I know Dad would be so proud that we continued to run Oatley Cellars for as long as we could and we know he has been with us and guiding us all the way. Although it is absolutely devastating closing the door, another one is opening for us, one on the other side of Oatley. So it’s not really goodbye as you can come and see us at Luxury Liquor at Oatley West, where we will continue the laughs, good times, great wines and perhaps a few oysters on the side! See you on the other side! Colleen & Donna
06.01.2022 skeetas local is all about bringing people together. At this point in time it would appear that this is not in the communitys best interest. So sadly we will ...be contributing to solving this problem by closing our doors until our aims realign with what is best for everyone. As always thanks for your ongoing support, we will see you on the other side. See more
