25.01.2022 MEET THE TEAM FRIDAY Every Friday we will be introducing you to a valuable member of our family. This week wed like to introduce Dr. Monique! Mon joined the Oberon and Hartley Practices in early 2018 as a new graduate from Sydney University. ... She adores all things tiny, as shown by her collection of small pets with massive personalities! She owns a Chihuahua named Sox that has a passion for nibbling toes and a Connemara pony named Fanta. She also owns two other ponies, Mya and Winnie. She has also recently adopted a kitten from the clinic, who she has named Tirami-Susie. Hailing from Western Sydney, Mon is loving her new country lifestyle - particularly riding her horse before work! She is keen on all things horses and has developed a special interest in small animal behaviour and anaesthetics.

24.01.2022 MEET THE TEAM FRIDAY Every week we will be introducing you to a valuable member of our family. This week wed like to introduce Dr. Tiffany! Tiffany has always been a country girl at heart, being exposed to the country way of life despite growing up in Northmead in Sydney. She completed her Bachelor of Veterinary Science at the University of Sydney in 2010 and then moved to Oberon where all her dreams have come true (getting a dog or two, finding her partner Brett, buying a... nice little house, living on a farm and purchasing a clinic, and getting married!) She worked at the Oberon Veterinary Clinic for 5 years prior to purchasing it with Bronwyn in 2015. Tiffany adopted a Kelpie X JRT called Moby, and domestic shorthair named Esmay. Tiffany has her masters in veterinary neurology and is Ovine Brucellosis and Johnes accredited. Tiffany loves the challenges that mixed practice brings - with varied cases and animals being treated daily, she remains calm in all situations. Her passions include animal behaviour, rehousing strays and sharing her knowledge with those around her. Earlier in the year Tiffany and husband Brett welcomed their first child, a beautiful little girl named Tori. Tiff is currently on maternity leave but you can still find her at both clinics helping out

24.01.2022 Baby, its cold outside! Top tips for pet owners this winter. Winter Coats: Although many cat and dog breeds have luxurious thick fur to keep them warm, when they are outside or on walks in the cold, they will still likely benefit from an additional winter coat. This is especially important if you have a thin, older or short haired breed.... A good pet-coat or jumper will give coverage from the neck to the base of the tail while also giving protection to their belly. Make sure your pets coat is the right fit and isnt restricting movement. Remember, dont leave your pets coat on once they are in a heated indoor environment as they may over-heat under all those layers! Better bedding: As the weather gets cooler, you might notice your pet is spending more time snuggled up in their bed. You can make a few simple adjustments to their bedding to ensure they are properly protected from the cold. Make sure your pets bed is away from drafts and elevated off cold, hard surfaces. You should raise the bed off the ground and add an extra blanket for warmth and comfort. Try not to place the bed too high though, as cold temperatures are especially tough on older dogs or cats with stiff joints who may have difficulty in movement after long periods of rest. The great indoors: If your pet spends a lot of time outside, then appropriate shelter is essential. Choose a spot for your pets housing that is protected from the elements in a warm elevated position. Fill your pets shelter with dry blankets that are washed regularly. If your dog is usually kept outside, you could bring them indoors to sleep at night, somewhere warm and dry, away from cold drafts and damp. Keep on moving: The temptation in winter is to stay indoors, safely snuggled under a warm blanket. But your dog or cat still needs exercise and boredom busting stimulation. Keep playing indoors with soft toys or a ball to get the blood moving. Or, brave the cold, grab the lead, put on both your winter coats, and head out for a brisk walk together! Your dog will still love the joy of their walk even if its a bit colder, and you will feel better for the exercise too. Heat seekers: Cats are notorious for finding warm spots around the house, like the afternoon sun through a window, or sitting close to heaters. Dogs too will seek out sources of heat during colder weather. Be wary of your pet sitting too close to heaters or fires as they can fall asleep and end up with dried out skin or worse, burns. Heart warmers: Pets are wonderful companions and loving members of the family. Snuggle up and stay warm together this winter, and remember, theres nothing like lots of cuddles to keep the winter blues at bay!

20.01.2022 Robbie is a Jack Russell that presented to Oberon Clinic on Monday after he was noticed to be struggling to breathe and coughing up blood. It was quickly determined that Robbie had ingested rat bait which stops blood from clotting and causes spontaneous bleeding. Robbie was treated with vitamin K to help his blood clot again. Despite supportive care and vitamin K, he still looked every flat and lethargic. Thats where Dr Lester the cattle dog cross came in to save the day to ...donate blood for a transfusion for Robbie. Robbie has been gradually improving each day and was discharged this afternoon. He is pictured here with Dr Helen and his blood brother, Dr Lester. Cases like these are an important reminder to be vigilant with rat bait. Baits may still be present on properties from previous owners even if you havent placed any personally. If you think your pet has ingested rat bait please contact the clinic immediately.

19.01.2022 Back in the January bushfires this beautiful Greater Glider who is a threatened native Australian species, was bought into the clinic after she was found near Jenolan Caves, suffering from severe smoke inhalation. Our team was unsure if she would survive but with some veterinary treatment and dedication from our local wildlife carers she recovered well. A few weeks ago her carer noticed she had developed a mass on her eyelid which would prevent her from being released back into the wild. Dr Sam and Nurse Sammi performed the delicate surgery and anaesthesia to remove the tumour. Thankfully the surgery went smoothly and the results came back that it was a benign mass and excision was complete. The glider recovered extremely well from surgery and has recently been released back into the wild to hopefully find a mate.

17.01.2022 Lola presented to our after hours service on Boxing Day after being bitten by a snake. Dr Mon started Lola on snake antivenom as soon as possible. She was then placed on IV fluids and supportive care in the clinic. After a few days, Dr Helen determined that Lolas blood wasnt clotting as it should. Her red blood cell level had decreased dramatically and she became very lethargic. Lola was started on medication to help her clot more effectively and then given a blood transfusion from her doggy sister, Willow. Luckily, she has improved significantly and was sent home late last week. Unfortunately in her time here at hospital Lola missed streaming an entire season of Greys Anatomy with her family. We are so happy to see her home finally catching up on Seattle Graces hot goss.

10.01.2022 CAUTION: RAT BAIT TOXICITY Dusty, who belongs to Veterinarian Sam, came in to the clinic last week to donate blood for an after hours emergency. Dusty was very brave, while he was sedated and prepped for his donation. A catheter was placed into his jugular vein where the blood was collected, and promptly transfused into our critical patient. He spent the rest of the night being spoilt with cuddles from Dr Sam while he recovered. We have had several patients come through ou...r clinic in the recent weeks after ingesting rat bait which is a very serious, and life threatening condition for our furry friends. If you suspect your dog has eaten or had access to, even a tiny amount of bait, it is important to get them checked by a veterinarian immediately. It generally takes 2-3 weeks for dogs to show the signs of rat bait toxicity, often giving owners a false sense of security that their dog was not affected. The effect most rat baits have on the body involves preventing the blood to clot effectively which results in severe internal bleeding, including into the lungs and digestive tract. The signs to look out for if your dog is affected: Difficulty breathing, lethargy, coughing (with or without blood), pale gums, bruising of the skin, blood in the urine or faeces, bleeding from the nose, bleeding of the gums, and sudden collapse. Early treatment is the key to a good survival rate. If you think your dog or cat has had access to baits please seek veterinary advice immediately, do not wait until they are showing signs of illness.

08.01.2022 This is Gerty (affectionately named by Vet Helen) one of two little twins born Monday, and she belongs to our wonderful Sam. She was feeding fine but got cold overnight down on the river where it was -5. She was flat and cold. Our Vet Madie put her on fluids and gave her some antibiotics as she had a nasty Nasal discharge. She had colostrum, was starting to drink well and was already starting to stand that afternoon. We cant wait to see what Gerty gets up to from here!
