Apart from the fact that I don’t know the person, let’s explore the false assumptions implicit in this request for help. - Internships are a one-size-fits-all offer and are distributed like vouchers. - Any internship will do. I just need to do an internship. An internship needs to be aligned with your career trajectory, providing you with industry exposure that can be leveraged for paid work. Anything less is a waste of your time. Steps to securing a useful internship: 1. Understand what skills you have to offer an employer and articulate that in writing and orally. 2. Identify your target companies understand their relevance to your skills set. 3. Identify the key technical managers to approach. 4. Prepare your approach strategy. 5. Seek guidance on how to do the above effectively. 18.01.2022 Footy With the cancellation of events due to COVID, there is a conspicuous absence of footy talk in the workplace. For the southern states this means AFL and for NSW & QLD, NRL rules the roost. But this is all about to change as the codes kick off again, albeit without crowds. Migrants new to the Australian workforce are often encouraged to embrace footy to fit in culturally. I’m not one to espouse this unless there is genuine interest - life’s too short to pretend you like s...omething, just for the sake of pleasing others. However, it is worth exploring football, both as a spectacle & cultural phenomenon. You may get hooked it’s an enthralling spectacle, enhanced by deeper appreciation. My son & I, both avid St. Kilda supporters, recently became followers of Kabaddi, when a group of ex-AFL players travelled to India to compete in this strange and wonderful sport a game that, for the most part, employs social distancing, with the teams separated by fear of being touched (a bit like COVID), only to be broken by bursts of aggressive pursuit and retreat. Brilliant. It reminds me of the ‘tiggy’ we played as kids, but far more strategic. It got to the point where my son & I would walk around house shouting Kabaddi Kabaddi Kabaddi! I’m hoping some Indian teams will tour Australia once we get back to normality. 13.01.2022 Jobs in regional Australia It seems that the Australian government is unlikely to open the gates to prospective skilled migrants soon. Some are predicting that we won’t get back to pre-Covid immigration numbers until mid-2022, or beyond. That’s not great news for professionals overseas eager to embark on a new chapter of their lives through immigration, but it does favour those already here. With the economy still chugging away, employers in regional areas are unable to draw ...on the steady flow of skilled professionals from overseas and are eager to find people willing to resettle from the cities to the country. This is particularly true for two professions accounting and engineering. Unlike IT roles which are heavily concentrated in the major cities, accounting & engineering opportunities are strong. But you need a particular approach to securing work in regional areas because employers are looking for more than just candidates who can do the job; they need people who are eager to settle, become part of the community and be there for the long haul. 09.01.2022 Workplace Footy Banter Ever found yourself at work not understanding a conversation? Are your colleagues constantly talking about things that are unfamiliar to you?... Footy (AFL in the southern states) is a seasonal interest but a passion for many, often occupying hours of conversation. The good news is that you don’t have to understand the game to join in the conversation. Here are a few tips to get you started: 1. Pick a team to support & learn some of the key players’ names. 2. Watch a few games and try to understand what’s going on. 3. Ask your colleagues questions about the game. One thing people love is being the expert. And every football supporter is an expert. Here are a few suggested questions to get you started: 1. Can you explain the holding-the-ball rule? 2. What are you allowed to do in a ruck contest? 3. What did you think of the umpires last night? 4. Who do you think will win the flag? 5. Do you think Tassie should have a team in the AFL? See how you go

06.01.2022 Are you a good fit for the job? Too often, applicants think they just need to explain their career achievements, and the employer will be convinced that they are the best candidate. Well, that’s only half of it. Don’t forget the other half - the employer/job. You need to demonstrate an understanding of the employer and their needs before you can show them that you’re the right candidate. ... Have you done the following? - Read their Annual Report (and Financials if that is relevant) - Understood their Strategic Plan - Read their website thoroughly - Googled the organization to find information about them that is not available on their website - Checked out their team on LinkedIn - Contacted your prospective manager - Spoken to anyone else who works there And finally Have you drawn a clear connection between what they do and what you have done? That’s right this is next level stuff. But absolutely essential if you want to secure an interview. Remember, it’s not all about you.
