23.01.2022 It doesnt matter where you were on this day 5 years ago; everyone has a story to tell of how they were affected in one way or another by the unprecedented fire...s that occured around the state that day. All of us here at VSAT would like to take a moment to remember the 173 people who tragically lost their lives, the 2,100 homes razed, also the pets, family and friends who were injured or displaced on this dark day. And of course we would like to honour & thank the heroic firefighters who fought day and night to get the fires under control and eventually put an end to their rampage. It is the day which we all now know as "Black Saturday". ----------- Below is a list of public remembrence gatherings which mark the five-year anniversary of Black Saturday: FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 7 KINGLAKE Community displays and exhibition, BBQ, ceremony with one minute silence from 7pm Kinglake Memorial Reserve, Extons Rd, 12pm to 7.30pm WHITTLESEA Ceremony and one minute silence from 7pm Whittlesea Community Garden, Laurel St, 6.45pm SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 9 CARLTON Victorian Government remembrance event and afternoon tea with photo displays, music from bushfire-affected areas and activities for children Melbourne Museum, Nicholson St, 2pm-4pm - VSAT Image: www.blacksaturdaybushfires.com.au

21.01.2022 Who is going to be the 100th person to like the Occupational Exercise Science page?

19.01.2022 We need fire and emergency service workers who operate on-call to be part of our research! We are interested in how working on-call affects stress physiology and sleep. In order to do this, we are looking for fire and emergency service workers who operate on-call to take part in a two week field study. The study involves wearing an activity monitor and a FitBit monitor, completing a sleep and work diary and providing saliva samples, while performing your normal day-to-day activities. If you are interested in being involved, or have any questions about the study, please contact Sarah Hall at [email protected].

19.01.2022 We need volunteer firefighters to be part of our research! We are interested in how extreme environmental conditions (45C) influence firefighters work performance and safety when on the fireground. In order to do this, we are looking for volunteer firefighters to simulate building a firebreak (using a rakehoe), and perform a low-intensity step test, in temperatures of 18C and 45C. Participants will simultaneously undergo a battery of physiological (e.g., heart rate and core temperature measurement) and cognitive (e.g., memory, attention) tests, to assess how safely theyre able to perform the work. If this sounds like something youd like to be a part of, or if you have any questions, please contact Brianna Larsen on [email protected] :)

18.01.2022 Hi everyone! We have ALMOST completed the extreme heat study we just need a couple more CFA vols! If youre a Melbourne-based CFA volunteer and this sounds like something youd like to be a part of, please contact Brianna Larsen on [email protected] :)

18.01.2022 This weekend Victoria has faced its worst bushfires since Black Saturday. To the thousands of firefighters who have battled over 150 bushfires across the state this weekend, thank-you. For more information about the bushfires go to http://www.cfa.vic.gov.au - Stay safe everyone.

17.01.2022 Today is #internationalvolunteerday so we just wanted to say a massive thank-you to all of the volunteers out there - the work that you do is invaluable.

16.01.2022 A heartfelt thanks to all the ACTRFS members who participated in the reliability study of the Physical Readiness for Operations -Tanker Test last weekend.

16.01.2022 5 brave participants are now halfway through the first Awake Hot testing session for the ASH project!

16.01.2022 Its official. This was the hottest summer in Australian history! January was the hottest month. January 7 was the hottest day. Heres the report from Australias top climate scientists: 123 extreme weather records broken 40.3 degrees average temperature across Australia on Jan 7... 7 days in a row over 39 degrees across Australia (average maximum temperature) AND heatwaves, floods, tropical cyclones, tornadoes, and bushfires and across Australia. Obviously these extreme fire days are becoming more frequent and severe, which makes our research even more important!

09.01.2022 Coming up this week is a presentation about a section of research our group is currently working. It will be focused on physical selection test development and presented at the Australisian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council Conference on Tuesday 3rd September. http://afac-2013.m.asnevents.com.au/event/abstract/5199

08.01.2022 Some of the research our team is currently undertaking

08.01.2022 Watch one of our current research projects titled ASH: Workplace stressors when fighting bushfires which focuses on the effects of heat, sleep deprivation and smoke currently being run in Victoria and South Australia. Participant places for volunteer firefighters are still available to the end of the year. Register your interest at http://tinyurl.com/awakesmokyhot if you would like to participate.

07.01.2022 Sleep study in need of firefighters for the upcoming fire season :) https://news.cfa.vic.gov.au//firefighters-needed-for-sleep

05.01.2022 There are reports of five firefighters hurt in fires that have been burning across Vicotria since the weekend. Today seven firefighters have been pulled from a fire in an open-cut coal mine near Morwell and are being treated for possible carbon monoxide poisoning. This highlights the importance of research aimed at preserving the health and safety of first responders. See http://www.heraldsun.com.au///story-fnl2cq7o-1226821646947 for an update on the fires.

05.01.2022 Some great comments by one of our participants last week :)

04.01.2022 The focus of the Occupational Exercise Science (OES) group is to use exercise science research to assist workplaces to promote and preserve the health and safety of workers in physically demanding occupations (e.g. civilian and military emergency services). Emergency service worker health and safety is a national priority, given the fundamental role these personnel play in keeping Australia safe from foreign conflict and human and natural disasters. The principal activities of OES are: (i) quantifying the work demands of, and physiological, biomechanical and subjective responses to physically demanding work and (ii) developing and validating job-specific health and fitness interventions for these workers.

02.01.2022 We are still recruiting for our study investigating the effect of working on-call from home on sleep and stress. To do this, we are looking for fire and emergency service workers to participate in a two week study. The study involves wearing an activity monitor (like a watch) and completing a sleep and work diary for the two week period. We also ask that participants collect saliva samples for the first week of the study. Participants are sent the study kit in the mail and there is no need attend any testing sessions. If you are interested in participating, or have any questions about the study, please contact Sarah Hall on (03) 9244 5033 or via email at [email protected]

01.01.2022 The first of the Awake, Hot series as part of the ASH testing will start next week in Brukunga, Adelaide!
