12.01.2022 "Before this thought monster, my biggest fears used to lie vaguely in the future. Now, fear lurks in everything: behind the next page in a book, the next click of a mouse, a word, a number, a memory, a thought, a doubt behind my eyelids in the morning before I jerk myself awake. 12.01.2022 This week is Schizophrenia Awareness Week, and we believe an integral part of this is raising awareness of behaviours that may indicate the presence of a more serious problem*. According to SANE Australia (sane.org), "a person diagnosed with schizophrenia will typically experience two types of symptoms: - short but intense episodes of psychosis, and - longer-term symptoms related to mood, motivation and emotional expression.... However, experiences vary from person to person and episode to episode. Not everyone experiences schizophrenia the same way. The best way to be sure of your diagnosis is to talk to a health professional." 09.01.2022 Yesterday marked the beginning of Schizophrenia Awareness Week (SAW) 2021. Though this event is hosted by the Mental Illness Fellowship of Western Australia (MIFWA), we think all of Australia should take part in raising awareness of schizophrenia. According to SANE Australia (sane.org), "Schizophrenia impacts a person's thoughts, perceptions, emotions, and behaviour. It can cause periods where people lose touch with reality. Other changes such as reduced motivation, flattene...d emotional expression, and problems processing information can also occur." As part of SAW 2021, MIFWA asked people with lived experience of schizophrenia what matters to them regarding their mental illness. These were their key concerns: Acceptance Self-stigma and stigma Contribution Support of peers To show your support this week, MIFWA are encouraging everyone to get involved by attending events, joining in the conversation in person and via social channels, and promoting general awareness about schizophrenia to those you come into contact with. For more information visit: www.mifwa.org.au/event/schizophrenia-awareness-week-2021/ www.sane.org/information-st/facts-and-guides/schizophrenia
