25.01.2022 Had a familiar visitor drop by in his EFI XM Falcon Hardtop yesterday, yep it is the one we dubbed "Christine" about 18 months ago when it fought us all the way, when we helped Johnny set it up. What a beautiful car it is to drive now, smooth, plenty of torque and comfortable, thanks for dropping in Johnny Paddlepops.
24.01.2022 Sometimes you just can't perform the miracle when you follow other people's dodgy work, a steering box that was modified to double D but after inspection and measuring it was cut off the centre to shaft axis, flats were a 0.86mm out of parallel so it would of flogged out fairly quickly, not surprising as it looks like it was done with a carbide burr in a die grinder. Now it's a vast improvement with correct fit and runs true, it won't effect performance but not a happy outcome, for me anyway, it's kinda below my standards. Spose shit happens sometimes.
23.01.2022 Are any of my friends on here around the Cooper's Plains QLD area or pass through there and could pickup a carby for me and help get it posted down to me?
23.01.2022 Bit of a marathon assembly session, after weeks of fab and machining time, 1 Capri collapsible column, 1 FB to CRS IFS , 1 EH collapsible to CRS rack, 3 early Falcon to RRS Rack Conversions (1 floor shift and 2 column Auto to C4) and the other 2 floor shift and column Auto to C4 are early Falcon to original steering box set ups. Still got some more to go and firewall mounts and final steering box assembly for some all before shipping out, cable shift kits and tie rod adaptors. Unfortunately we are still having supply chain issues for some USA items so please be patient, availability due to closed manufacturers and new shipping procedures are still causing delays beyond our control.
21.01.2022 Screwcutting Saturday, repairing a irreplaceable shaft for a 53 Oldsmobile power steering box, prep it ,build, machine and screw cut to size
20.01.2022 After receiving a delivery of repo auto honeypots from the USA that are now coming from a new mould ( which has different casting identifies from one's that used to work and fit) as they are subcontracted out. Unfortunately we received no help besides "can you do something to make them work as we'll only send the same stocks a replacement". Well fuckit, we are starting to remachine the bores to size, re-slotting the keyways to suit and fixing the flashing issues. RIP DC, let's hope this is not the new standard
17.01.2022 Some days you just feel like spitting chips, ripping steel chips off steering shafts that is, if your columns here it's either in this lot or been through this.
15.01.2022 One for a little SR20 powered 1966 Datsun Fairlady collapsible conversion, yep also Engineer approved, full roller bearings conversions at top and bottom assemblies (no plastic here), fully sealed, new firewall mount and bolt on breakaway dash mount.
14.01.2022 A nice 64 Compact Fairlane collapsible automatic column to suit a C4 and mate to std steering box and column linkages, all new assembly made in-house including our new gear position quadrant, another happy customer sorted.
13.01.2022 What started as LHD Falcon column Auto spear of death, is now a RHD collapsible C4 automatic column change unit to suit a RRS rack and pinion in a 65US Falcon, also includes our "Smooth shift" cable kit (yes made in Australia as well) also notice our prototype C4 gear position quadrant, this will be available shortly with all our columns, as well as versions for fordomatic 2 speed and 3 speed BW35 columns XK to XP. Now to get a few more assembled.
10.01.2022 Another few early Falcon columns sorted, a 1" DD satin black to suit a RRS rack, and 2 column Auto to suit C4 trans(with our correct C4 detents), indexable shift arms on the bottom and fully sealed with radial lip seals protecting deep groove industrial bearings(no foam or plastic bushes here). Just packing one up that's heading back to Cal's Garage in Toowoomba included is a fully reconditioned steering box modded and detailed up (our standard service) and our Smoothshift Cable kit to suit as well, all ready for a clients XK they're building. https://www.facebook.com/Cals-Garage-Custom-Fab-Mechanical-557776954415686/
09.01.2022 Bit of afternoon madness with Mark from AMP Performance
08.01.2022 Just prepping and packing some more column auto cable shift kits to suit xk-p falcons, all waterjet cut stainless components & fittings and highest quality Cablecraft Motion Control cables from USA, all to achieve the highest quality and accuracy.
07.01.2022 Sunday arvo tidy up and packing of some automatic Early Falcon collapsible columns to go out tomorrow all with our own cable shift kits, and some fully record/modified steering boxes for the columns not going on Rack and Pinion setups
06.01.2022 Slowly getting through the next batch of columns, in amongst them are multiple of LHD Mustangs, the usual XK-P Falcon in both floor shift and column Auto, as well as some prototypes for Early Holden and GM products to suit T700 as well as BTR 4 speeds for Ford fraternity. All new tubes are CNC machined, including going through our new end finishing and deburring machine, before hitting the bench for fitting out then assembled with load cell and data logger to ensure a accur...ate assembly process, this is before priming and final assembly. Supplies are definitely proving difficult at times, especially when a dozen repo honeypots finally arrive only to find that the manufacturer has changed tooling and they are totally wrong, with little help from the supplier we'll have to jig up and machine them to correct sizes, hey what's 0.5mm undersize was basic response from one of biggest repo companies in the states. 06.01.2022 A bit of a before and after of steering box mods for early Falcons, this is how most come to us, and how they go out the door, stripped, blasted, heatproof painted, replated covers, new fasteners etc in addition to the internal mods and rebuilding. But realise only about 30-40% of steering boxes we get are repairable these days, most are internally damaged from lack of lube and high water content, which corrodes the ground surfaces or breakdown of lube causes brinelling damage beyond some regrinding we can do. And whats worse we have seen many reconditioned steering boxes with used bearings in recirculating ball nuts, we do have these chrome balls made for us exclusively so you get what you pay for with us.
05.01.2022 Another example of getting more than what you pay for, a customer sent this abomination in to be built into a collapsible C4 automatic column for a XP Falcon. As you can see we didn't even pull it down as it didn't even have any usable components for a donor, we sorted it out basically it's a new column, including our exclusive C4 gear position quadrant to be matched to our Cableshift kit to C4 transmission.
04.01.2022 Something a little different was another bombproof column for a small block powered 76 Bedford van. The column has gone back to the customer for fitment and engineering now. It involved collapsible conversion, full compliment roller bearing assemblies both at top and bottom of column with radial seals for total protection like all our columns, new floor mount and breakaway dash mount to original location.
04.01.2022 A set-up for a XP Falcon with a big six and BW35 automatic, so customer needed a collapsible column to meet standards but work all as std. Just one advantage of our columns is lower levers can be changed to suit your needs. A full kit including rebuilt/modified steering box, couplings, mounts, column with new quadrant, knobs stainless indicator arms etc.
01.01.2022 Another Engineer Approved XP Collapsible Conversion to suit column change C4 all of to a Qld customer for his coupe. All connected with one of our cable shift kits for zero backlash, reco/modified steering box, all new mounts as a true bolt in conversion. Includes our new unique C4 quadrant/gear indicator and internal detents for correct shift patterns.
01.01.2022 Just settling in for the weekend down the road at Crowdy Head for Rattletrap IV, finally some time to kick back.
