25.01.2022 Smiling Is Contagious (Author Unknown) Smiling is contagious, you catch it like the flu, When someone smiled at me today,... I started smiling too. I passed around the corner and someone saw my grin. When he smiled I realised I'd passed it on to him. I thought about that smile, then I realised its worth. A single smile, just like mine could travel round the earth. So, if you feel a smile begin, don't leave it undetected. Let's start an epidemic quick, and get the world infected! (read by Neil Derrick after the Lord's Prayer at yesterday service) *Photo source: 71toes,com on Pinterest

23.01.2022 ["If I Was White"] 1. I visited the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra on my recent holiday. There, an Aboriginal artwork caught my eyes. That was a text art titled If I was White created by Vernon Ah Kee, an Indigenous artist. 2. In that artwork, there are 53 statements starting with If I was White. To introduce a few, If I was White I could walk down the street and people would pay no particular attention to me, If I was White I would have more chance of getti...ng a job, If I was White I would believe myself to be equal to anyone, If I was White I could say My father worked hard to buy this land,. . . 3. I carefully read every statement in front of the artwork, and felt something sad. The text work finishes like this: But I am Black and I am as misunderstood as the next Blackfella, but I am beginning to understand the White Man. When I read the last sentence, but I am beginning to understand the White Man, I felt a shiver. My sense of sadness was suddenly transformed into a feeling of hope. 4. Before reading the last sentence, all the statements of If I was White sounded like resentment or blame, but after reading the last paragraph I realised that all his statements were not resentment, but fierce struggling to understand the White people by departing from his culture and pains. Likewise, when we take a distance from our world, our pains, and our stereotypes, we can say, I am beginning to understand what I cannot accept. 5. In this respect, Miroslav Volf, one of my favourite theologians teaching at Yale Divinity School, argues that we should depart from our life-context and culture to accept the divine mysteries and otherness in our life journey. Volf takes Abrahams departure as an example. From Abrahams life journey as a migrant, we can learn that moving a distance from our culture means giving up not only our land and human networks, but also our rights, privileges, and even fixed ideas. 6. At that, a space can be created in us to accept the others as well as God, the absolute otherness. Through that effort of de-centring and re-centring, Abraham could meet God personally and walk together with Him for his life. Like Abraham, I believe, we Christians must depart from our comfort zone ceaselessly to make a space for God and strangers to come into our life. 23.01.2022 [Special gathering with volunteers] A great time to gather and develop a sense of companionship through singing together, listening to stories and having a lovely morning tea. ". . . For a long time, our church has done lots of things for our local community including the Dove OP shop and the Loaves and Fishes ministry. The bottom line is that without all volunteers' precious support we couldn't have served our local people and beyond. So, the main purpose of today's gathering is to say to you, 'Thank You.' Thank you for your amazing support and commitment. . . ." (Rev Dr Jong Soo Park, the minister of OG-BH Uniting Church)

14.01.2022 The 15th Assembly of the Uniting Church in Australia has approved an additional statement on marriage to allow the Uniting Church ministers to conduct same-gender weddings, not changing the traditional understanding of marriage. This means the UCA will hold two equal and distinct statements of belief on marriage, which will give freedom to the UCA ministers and congregations to decide whether to accept the change or not on the basis of their faith and conscience. For more information, please read the reflection of Past UCA President Rev. Prof Andrew Dutney linked below.
