22.01.2022 For simple acute ear infections, the recommended strategy in Western medicine is to "watch and wait" for a couple of days. 21.01.2022 WIFI AFFECTS SPERM, AND A WIFI SHIELD MAY PROTECT SPERM - new study (Copied from BioNews 8th May 2019) WiFi devices affect sperm, suggests study... 7 May 2019 - by Catherine Heffner A small study by researchers in Japan has indicated that exposure to WiFi may have detrimental effects on sperm function. The study assessed the effect of electromagnetic (EM) waves from WiFi devices on human sperm. It found that longer periods of direct exposure to a portable WiFi router decreased the motility rate and increased the death rate of sperm from human samples. The researchers also found that using a small WiFi shield to block EM waves improved the outcome for the sperm. The work was presented at the Asia Pacific Initiative on Reproduction (ASPIRE) conference in Hong Kong. Recently, the decrease in fecundity in developed countries has been a matter of great concern, said Kumiko Nakata at the Yamashita Shonan Yume Research Centre in Fujisawa, Japan, who led the study. EM waves are said to be safe, but the shower of them caused by WiFi devices may be a contributing factor to the declining fertility trend. She added: Our study has shown that over a relatively short time, a WiFi shield can offer some protection from the harmful effects of the EM waves. The sperm samples analysed were taken from 51 men seeking fertility treatment, such as IVF or artificial insemination, at the clinic. Samples were tested under different conditions; no exposure to EM, shield-protected, and full exposure. The exposed samples were placed near a pocket WiFi router similar to the way a mobile phone might be carried in a mans trouser pocket. After two hours, sperm from all groups had decreased health and motility, but the most substantial effect was seen in the sperm with full exposure to EM waves. The difference in sperm health between groups was seen even more clearly after 24 hours of exposure. Judging by the results of the current study, it is fair to assume that the longer the exposure is, there is a higher risk for potential negative effects, Nakata told newsGP. And what I mean by longer exposure is not only a few days, weeks or months we are talking about years. So looking at billions of people over the next few decades, the impact could be huge when it comes to fertility rates. The rise in WiFi-based technology in recent years has prompted concerns over its effects on human health. The possible links between exposure to WiFi connections and sperm quality has been previously investigated with laptops (see BioNews 636), and mobile phones in trouser pockets (see BioNews 758).

20.01.2022 EXERCISE AND MALE FERTILITY This new article is an excellent overview of how physical activity and male fertility may intersect. The take-home message for most couples?... Everything in moderation! Being sedentary is a risk factor for reduced male fertility (and many chronic health problems). But on the other end of the scale, too much exercise can lead to hormonal imbalances in both men and women, leading to a negative impact on fertility and sexual health: "Evidence would once again seem to suggest that moderate, healthy exercise is the key for a better overall health, whereas excessive loads of endurance training are more likely to induce worse outcomes, also in terms of fertility" Chinese medicine is all about balance, harmony and wellbeing. It is a science built upon thousands of years of observation and experience. If you have questions about how your lifestyle may be helping or harming your health, come to see us and find out how Chinese medicine describes your unique situation. 19.01.2022 "Vegan Diet Reduces Inflammation More than AHA-Recommended Diet A vegan diet works better than the American Heart Association-recommended diet for heart disease prevention, according to a study published by the American Heart Association (AHA). Researchers randomized 100 participants with coronary artery disease to either a vegan diet (no meat, poultry, eggs, dairy, or fish) or an AHA-recommended diet (fewer servings of non-fish animal protein, more servings of fish, and only... low- or no-fat dairy) for eight weeks. The primary endpoint marker for inflammation, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, improved significantly more in the vegan group, compared with the AHA group. The authors conclude a vegan diet should be considered to help avoid adverse outcomes among heart disease patients." 09.01.2022 Gene discovered that links PCOS to testosterone production (Article copied from BioNews 8th May 2019) Gene behind major cause of womens infertility found... 7 May 2019 - by Jakki Magowan A gene that plays a key role in causing polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) has been discovered, and could lead to better disease prediction and treatment. The research, carried out at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, New York, could potentially help one in ten women of child-bearing age. PCOS is a major cause of female infertility and is associated with other serious health problems, said one of the lead study authors, Dr Andrea Dunaif at Mount Sinai. Our findings provide important new insights into the mechanisms by which genetic variation causes PCOS. The team carried out a genetic, family-based analysis using whole genome sequencing for members of 62 families affected by the disease. This included both parents and one or more reproductive-age daughters with PCOS. It also included daughters unaffected by the condition. They then determined which genes contained genetic variants that would likely damage the ovaries. Results confirmed that rare genetic variants in the gene DENND1A, which is involved in testosterone production, were present in more than half of the affected families. Heightened testosterone levels are a typical finding in women with PCOS. In particular, two variants in the DENND1A gene showed specific PCOS-related traits. We hope our results will help uncover involved hereditary mechanisms and teach us more about the molecular drivers of the disorder, said co-lead author Professor Geoffrey Hayes at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, Illinois. Published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, Dr Dunaif anticipates their study results will facilitate earlier diagnosis, more targeted treatments and a possible cure. The hope is with genetic testing we may be able to identify high-risk people and start measures early, she told IFLScience. When we understand the genetic pathways that are involved, we can develop drugs to target them. It may be that the gene variants that were discovering, which are mainly in the parts of DENND1A, regulate the amount of it that is produced in tissues and maybe some of the structure. If we understand that, then we may be able to come up with ways to alter the increase in DENND1A activity that happens in PCOS and treat the disease itself and even cure a number of patients.
