15.01.2022 There is alot more to Coral then meets the eye. Each Coral structure is made up of 1000's of what we call Coral Polyps (as seen in the photo above). Polyps are like stomachs with tiny mouths which sit on top of a hard skeleton that is part of the Reef. The polyps filter nutrients from the water and deposit calcium carbonate beneath them which allows them to slowly grow bigger. But it is the Corals unique relationship with a microscopic algae called Zooxanthellae that prov...ides them with most of their energy. Zooxanthellae live inside most Coral and use energy from the sun (like flowers) to photosynthesize and produce up 95% of the food Coral consume. They are also responsible for most of the colours we identify with Corals. The Coral in return provides a place for the Zooxanthellae to live, along with vital nutrients such as Carbon Dioxide, Phosphorous and Nitrogen. This is what we call a symbiotic relationship. And it is vital to the survival of most Coral Species. See more
