14.01.2022 With the upcoming Facebook Live screening of the feel good documentary 'Peloton Against Plastic' and the opportunity to hear Senator Peter Whish-Wilson talk about the federal bill he proposed to phase out single-use plastics and create federal laws that hold big business and corporations to account on recycling targets. Now is a great time to head over to http://fairfoodforager.buzzsprout.com//2957416-peter-whish and check out a previous podcast Senator Peter Whish-Wilson d...id with Paul Hellier from the Fair Food Forager. With portfolios including Consumer Affairs, Treasury & Finance, Small Business, Healthy Oceans and Waste and Recycling Peter Whish-Wilson has a lot on his plate. Lucky for us he is also one of the good guys of Australian politics with the intellect and passion needed to put people and the planet back in priority over corporate greed and self interest. : Dave Groves Photography

11.01.2022 Lets talk about 'Bioplastics'!! There is a lot of confusion and mixed results as to what is considered a bioplastic, whether those labeled as compostable or biodegradable actually break down in the natural environment, and whether the feedstocks used to make bio-based plastics are environmentally preferred to fossil fuels. While bio-based plastics (like PLA) and conventional plastics with enhanced degradation are commonly touted as sustainable alternatives to conventional pla...stics, these products will often only breakdown and meet compostable requirements when sent to an industrial composting facility, where there is carefully controlled humidity and temperature. According to bioplastics.org.au, there are only about 150 of these facilities that accept compostable plastics, nationwide. Even those industrial composters that currently accept bio-based plastics are considering moving away from this practice, as many bio-based plastics fail to meet compostability standards in a useful time period and have even contaminated the larger compost pile by leaching chemicals and other additives, destroying an important economic resource for the compost facility. In other words, PLA plastic will not break down into natural elements (biodegrade) in your backyard composting pile, the landfill, or most importantly, the ocean. In addition, if added to the recycling bin, PLA plastics can contaminate recycling processes because they can be chemically different from traditional plastics. Therefore, its not always the case that bioplastics be considered a sustainable alternative to plastic. The Surfrider Foundation advocates for source reduction of single-use plastics, and encourages the adoption of reusable items as the best way to move away from single-use plastic. Furthermore, Surfrider does not advocate for the use of bioplastic materials as the preferred alternative to conventional plastics. This is because most bioplastic materials do not break down in the marine environment, shift the burden to other resources, and perpetuate the single-use mentality. Surfrider has compiled this comprehensive document to help consumers, businesses, and the general public make informed choices as they try to live an ocean friendly lifestyle. http://beachapedia.org/Bioplastic_Glossary #oceanfriendlyaus #surfrideroceanfriendly #oceanfriendlyrestaurants #strawssuck #surfrideraus #protectandenjoy #takeaction #plasticfree #Surfrider #SurfriderFoundation #RiseAbovePlastics #forthefuture #healthyocean #healthycoasts #climatechange #risingtides #makeadifference #cleanwater #coastalpreservation #oceanprotection #fairfoodforagerapp : @brian_yuri

06.01.2022 Plastic are found in the foods that we eat. We must persuade our government to force corporations to stop using plastics in packaging or else we risk consuming plastic chemicals. 03.01.2022 This week Surfrider Foundation Australia’s Susie Crick spoke to the Environment and Communications Legislation Committee at the Senate Hearing into the Product Stewardship Amendment Bill that Senator Peter Whish-Wilson presented time Parliament last year. Words from Susie’s page below: Yesterday I was invited to speak at the Senate hearing of the Environment and Communications Legislation Committee (Product Stewardship Amendment (Packaging and Plastics) Bill 2019). The ai...m of the proposed legislation is to 'force industry to act' to reduce non-recyclable, non-compostable single-use plastics. Thank you Senator Peter Whish-Wilson for presenting this important Bill. Our government (indeed ALL global governments) must acknowledge that plastic packaging is an environmental and human health threat, and force industry to be responsible for the waste they create. Plastic pollution is poisoning our landfills, oceans ....... and us. The problem is too big for individuals to change. The onus shouldn’t be on individual behaviours but rather on governmental policy to force the polluting corporations who are perpetuating the problem to change their practice and packaging; the offending producers must seek alternate materials that are compatible with nature or containers that are reusable. Our government must alter policies regarding plastic packaging as they have a ‘duty of care’ for future generations and must shift their thinking from fiscal prosperity to regenerating our future nation. #oceanfriendlyaus #surfrideroceanfriendly #oceanfriendlyrestaurants #oceanfriendly, #oceanfriendlyhi #strawssuck #surfrideraus #protectwhatyoulove #protectandenjoy #takeaction #plasticfree #Surfrider #SurfriderFoundation #RiseAbovePlastics #forthefuture #healthyocean #healthycoasts #healthyplanet #climatechange #risingtides #makeadifference #cleanwater #coastalpreservation #oceanprotection #fairfoodforagerapp
