18.01.2022 A little bit of history on Abalone The common names for abalone range from Ear Shell, Sea Ears, Ormer in the UK, Perlemon in South Africa and Paua in New Zealan...d. In Australia they can be referred to as Mutton Fish or Mutton Shell. Early settlers in Australia told of seeing indigenous women diving for Abalone and levering the Abalone off the rocks, and cooking them on fires whole in their shells. The meat of abalone is used for food, and the shells of abalone are used as decorative items and as a source of mother of pearl for jewelry, buttons, buckles, and inlay. Abalone shells have been found in archaeological sites from over 100.000 yrs ago. Abalone can form pearls, and these can be made into jewelry. They are exceptionally rare, so it is very lucky to find abalone pearls. Worldwide, abalone pearls have also been collected for centuries. The shell has special meaning in many cultures and has spiritual properties. The Maori people of New Zealand call abalone Paua The Maori people used this shell in warrior artwork, they also believe the shell strengthens the body and the heart of the wearer. The Apache nation believes there is a connection between the shell and the first woman - known as White Painted Woman. She is also known as Esdzanadehe or Changing Woman. She survives a flood in the shell of an abalone. Many cultures think of the abalone as a symbol of water. Its calmness and tranquility protect us from life's unsettling passions. To wash away any unpleasantness and shield us from the darkness. The abalone’s value comes both from its delicious meat and from its polished shell, In nature, it lives on rocky outcrops in the ocean, where it feeds on algae.
