21.01.2022 We were off Breaksea Spit and spotted this guy. Thought we had a swordfish at first but ended up being a Great Hammer . Such a different temperament to our common hammers off Nsw inshore reefs. Definitely not shy !

20.01.2022 Adding insult to injury. While we all slept last night a couple of lucky commercial operators beach netting north of Port Stephens managed to put 63 boxes of large mature aggregating Mulloway through the Sydney Fish Markets today. So much for the Recovery Program! The maths equals approx 1.8 Ton Photo used for attention

16.01.2022 About the only good thing that came from COVID was the sensational snapper ! Lack of charters allowed us to travel up the coast : A privilege to target these big breeders . Hopefully if we can manage the stocks we won’t have to go down the same road as SA or Qland.

08.01.2022 I hear so often hear how the fishing has never been better . Heres an article from the late 1800s to put it in perspective about how good it really was and maybe if managed correctly how good it can be. I doubt it though with the way its being looked after at present

07.01.2022 Great trip up the coast. Not a lot of fish but definitely some big ones. 3 over 20lb and a few dustings

07.01.2022 Check out this great vid shot by The Captain Mag for Penn Reels or more specifically their new Clash ll Love being involved with a company that so supportive and is definitely on the rise with new products and constant innovations, Special thanks to Jack and Nick for their expertise and editing an awesome vid ! 06.01.2022 Check out this amazing recapture of a Snapper! Tagged by us on the 7/01/19 at Swrs in 20 meters of water Recaptured in Ballina on 4/09/19 Original weight estimate 5.5kg Original length 79cm ... 240 days later and 130 miles north 85.3cm and 7.5kg in length! Interesting that we caught it under a slimy school on a lure And it was recaptured with a slimy making me think it specialized in live feed and followed the bait up the coast (pelagic) and hence its fast growth rate See more

06.01.2022 Just a headsup to all our clients, there are a couple of rogue charter operators working out of the Harbour that are taking more than one client on their boats. If caught by Maritime or police they can and will fine the operators $5000 and each client $1000 ! These operators are fully aware of the rules and potential fines but choose to put their clients at risk . It then becomes a very expensive days fishing .

05.01.2022 Been some good Mahi around. Hopefully they stick around.

05.01.2022 When drones and spotter planes can fly over miles of open beaches and effectively mark every school of Mulloway it makes it ridiculously easy to identify and Harvest the few remaining schools of large fish!

04.01.2022 Some great info on the Mulloway recovery program in this article By Fishing world Mags journalist Scott Thomas Rec fishos doing their bit to help improve the Mulloway stocks by releasing a MASSIVE 89% of all estuary caught fish http://www.fishingworld.com.au//nsw-mulloway-recovery-prog

04.01.2022 Kingfish Stock Assessment Over the past few days DPI has been contacted by anglers seeking more info about work being done by DPI fisheries scientists to assess... kingfish stocks. Its great to see so many fishos are interested in the science used to assess stocks of key species such as kingies. Here are the facts about the kingfish stock assessment work, which we hope will help provide a better understanding of the process being undertaken. First up, its important to realise that the kingfish work is part of a national fish stock assessment, which is currently underway to inform the Status of Australian Fish Stock (SAFS) reports. These reports, which are managed by the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation, are produced collaboratively by more than 100 scientists around the country and are carried out every two years. The next reports are due by the end of this year. Assessment of stock status is undertaken to understand the health of each fish stock, which in the SAFS process includes more than 100 species and 400+ different stocks of fish. This biennial process helps to inform the science used to develop fisheries management approaches around Australia. Kingfish is one of the key species in SAFS (see https://fish.gov.au/report/218-Yellowtail-Kingfish-2018 for info) that will be updated as part of the current national stock assessment process. The main reason there is a more detailed focus on the kingfish assessment this year is because uncertainty in the 2018 SAFS reports led to the overall east coast kingfish stock (which includes Queensland, NSW, Victoria and South Australia) being classified as undefined. There were also some concerns over what that 2018 data was showing for the NSW portion of the stock. Genetic analyses have shown the kingfish population in WA to be genetically distinct from the kingies found on the eastern (NSW) and southern/central (Victoria, SA) coasts or in New Zealand waters. As part of a strategy to improve science-based data in NSW, a stakeholder workshop was planned to bring together species experts (from both science and fishing backgrounds) to address the data deficiencies and get a better determination of the stock status of kingfish. Unfortunately, this workshop had to be cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions. Instead, initial stakeholder engagement with these species experts has now involved remote discussions (phone, emails etc). One aspect of this engagement has involved DPI scientists modelling historical kingfish catches by talking to a number of highly experienced kingfish stakeholders across the recreational, charter, and commercial fishing sectors to ask about any changes these fishers may have observed over time in the kingfish fishery. This historical catch data is from the 1950s up to 2018. The purpose of this research was to check with fishers who have a good understanding of historical catches (many of those surveyed had over 40+ years targeting kingfish) and see whether the historical catch data passed the "pub test". In other words, did this historical catch data match up with what fishers who were targeting kingfish back in key periods of fishing activity in the 1970s, 80s, 90s, and early 2000s actually experienced? For example, the questions researchers asked in the survey included, Did the historical catch data correspond to any changes you observed in the fishery?, What are your experiences of the fishery?, What are the major management changes that have affected harvest in the sector you know most about?, Has technology improved the ability to catch kingfish?" and "Has the ability to access kingfish changed? While this work is only a small part of the overall stock assessment process, the historical perspectives provided by fishers who were on the water at these key times over the past 40 or so years can be useful in helping validate the available catch record data on kingfish. This, in turn, can help improve the outcomes of the national stock assessment process for kingfish by ensuring the science is as good as we can get it. We hope this information about the work being done on kingfish provides some useful background on the national stock assessment process. To be honest, its pretty techo stuff but it is vitally important work as it allows scientists to better understand for the health of our fisheries. If youd like more info, check out the Status of Australian Fish Stock Reports webpage at www.fish.gov.au. When it comes to kingie fishing here in NSW, its important to note that no decisions have been made by the NSW Government on any future management arrangements for this species. Any future management would be informed by the best available science. If youd like further info, feel free to email us at [email protected]. Well be happy to help.

01.01.2022 Recaptured Spanish Mackerel Sets New Record! A Spanish mackerel originally tagged by gun fishing father and son team Vic and Zane Levett has gone on to be recap...tured. Zane (pictured) caught the fish during a hot bite on the NSW Mid North Coast back in April 2019. Estimated at 13kg, the mack was quickly subdued on relatively heavy tackle. The fish was brought alongside the boat where the hook was removed and it was tagged. After a quick couple of photos, the Spaniard was swum boat side and subsequently released in excellent condition. Fast forward to 29 October 2020, the fish was recaptured by well-known game fishing boat Kekoa, which is operated by Luke and Kelly Fallon. Crew member Heath Irvine (pictured) was tasked with providing dinner for charter clients while the boat was anchored near the No.10 Ribbon Reef, offshore of Lizard Island in Northern Queensland. After a quick swim, Heath managed to spear this well-conditioned Spaniard, which provided several quality meals for both clients and crew. Once the fish was brought aboard, the tag was noticed, and quickly reported to us. Upon recapture, the fish weighed 16kg. The fish spent 566 days at liberty and was caught more than 1050 nautical miles (about 1940km) from its original release location. There have been more than 100 reported recaptures of Spanish mackerel, but this fish sets a new record for the furthest distance travelled by a tagged Spanish mackerel since the Game Fish Tagging Program began in 1973. The NSW DPI Game Fish Tagging Program is run using funds from the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust. More than 490,000 fish have been tagged under the program so far. If you'd like to get involved, please phone (02) 6691 9602 or email [email protected].
