23.01.2022 Footage captured by skipper Aaron on Reliance of hundreds of Mahi-mahi schooling around the boat while hauling crab gear in the dark last week. These amazing looking fish are one of the fastest growing in the world. #mahimahi #dolphinfish #fish #fishing

22.01.2022 SCIENTIFIC NAME(s) Jasus edwarsii SPECIES NAME(s) Southern Rock Lobster COMMON NAMES... Crayfish Southern Rock Lobster (Jasus edwardsii) are found in Southern Australian and New Zealand waters from the southern capes in Western Australia to central New South Wales including Tasmania. They are usually found in and around reefs from shallow waters out to the edge of the continental shelf 200m+ deep. They can vary in colour from dark red to a lighter and whiter strawberry colour depending on the local habitat. A Southern Rock Lobster is usually at least 5-6 years of age before it reaches the minimum size and can be legally harvested. They can live beyond 20-years of age and grow in excess of five kg although size is not always good indicator of age (many of the oldest lobsters are also very small). Commercial Southern Rock Lobster fisheries have operated sustainably in Tasmania, South Australia and Victoria for over 150 years and now bring thousands of jobs to rural Australia and hundreds of millions of export dollars into the country. Internationally it is regarded as one of, if not the finest tasting lobster, and is highly prized throughout Australia, NZ, and Asia as a seafood delicacy.

22.01.2022 Reliance leaving the Geraldton fishing boat harbour and heading to sea for deep sea crystal crab. Nice weather for it and generally good catches this time of year.

21.01.2022 HOLY CRAB! Giant robber crabs have gatecrashed a family BBQ on Christmas Island! Is this what nightmares are made of? These are coconut crabs - also known... as robber crabs because they steal everything, a local resident said. What would you do if this was you? Christmas Island Tourism

19.01.2022 SCIENTIFIC NAME(s) Pseudocarcinus gigas SPECIES NAME(s) Giant crab COMMON NAMES... King crab Giant crab, as the name may suggest, holds the title for being the world’s heaviest crab. It is second in physical size to only the Japanese spider crab. The giant crab has other common names such as king crab in Australia and emperor crab in much of Asia. It is famous for its size and appearance, but also its delicious taste. It is highly sought after not only in Australia but also around the rest of the world, particularly Asia. Giant crab are found from South-West Western Australia to Tasmania in South-East Australia The giant crab lives on rocky and muddy bottoms in the oceans off Southern Australia on the edge of the continental shelf at depths of 20820 metres. It is most abundant at 110180 metres in the summer and 190400 metres in the winter. The seasonal movements generally follow temperature as it prefers 1214 C. The full temperature range where the species can be seen appears to be 1018 C. They are caught in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, and Tasmania.

19.01.2022 SCIENTIFIC NAME(s) Chaceon albus SPECIES NAME(s) Crystal crab COMMON NAMES... Snow crab Crystal Crab (Chaceon albus) are found in Western Australian waters of the Indian Ocean and the Timor Sea from Esperance in the south to the Northern Territory border, on the seaward side of the 150 m isobath out to the extent of the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Crystal crab has a geographical distribution restricted to WA waters. They occur on the continental shelf at depths of 300 1200 m. On the west coast of WA crystal crabs are caught primarily in depths of 500 800 m, although they are found over a broader range on the south coast of WA (i.e. 400 900 m depths). The habitat within these depth ranges are generally sand/mud or broken shell. Commercial catch records indicate that males are larger than females and the commercial catch is dominated by males with the legally-retainable catch (> 103 mm CL [120 mm CW]) of males being 5.5 times that of legally-retainable females (Daume et al. 2016). The crystal crab fishery on the west coast of Western Australia has only been commercially fished since the late 1990s. The fishery is largely focused on the coast between North West Cape and Fremantle and most of catch has been taken between 500-800 m. Fishing outside of those depths has contributed less than 5% and in some years less than 1% of the total landings (Smith et al. 2004). This fishery entered full assessment by the Marine Stewardship Council system in February 2015.

18.01.2022 The snow crab or crystal crabs are caught in Western Australian waters, in depths greater than 500m which causes the distinctive white colour due to lack of light at such depths. It is deliciously sweet and tender and true delicacy to eat. It is considered one of the best eating crabs in the world. Oceanic trading, Perth's newest supplier of snow or crystal crab is loaded to the brim and ready for you. Contact us to secure your next order.

16.01.2022 Definitely the most unique use of crystal crab we have seen! Reposted from @lilliwaters ‘Afterlife’ 2020 112.5 x 100cm... Archival pigment print on fibre rag Edition of 8 + 2AP ‘Disenchantments of the World’ solo exhibition now showing at @curatorialandco gallery, Redfern, NSW, 18-28th of November. A series of 6 major new still life works and 5 moving images are on show. This series of underwater still lifes draws inspiration from paintings by the old Dutch masters - images of flowers symbolising beauty, nobility and prosperity and their impermanence. ‘Tulpenmanie’ references Abraham Mignon’s ‘Still Life with Flowers in a Glass Vase’, and ‘Passiflora Edulis’ references Cornelis de Heem’s ‘Festoon with Fruit and Flowers’. A closer gaze reveals a mash-up: luxe Rembrandt esque blooms are entwined with g(littering) plastic, and the darkness lends the images a lonely, eerie quality. Prosperity has typically been lauded as something to desire and celebrate, yet now more than ever, the unpleasant complexities of wealth and indulgence are apparent. Globally, we nonchalantly poison the environment in pursuit of prosperity. This series also references one of the earliest examples of consumerism and collective mania - the Dutch Tulip fever in the early 1600’s. The exotic coloration of the most highly prized tulip during tulpenmanie was caused by a virus that infected the flower, leading to a buying hysteria. ‘Disenchantments of the World’ is a contemporary exploration of human darkness, desire, and the fleeting nature of earthly pleasures. To book a visit to the exhibition, view the catalogue or for interest in these works, contact Sophie Vander at [email protected] www.curatorialandco.com

16.01.2022 Beautiful weather 130 nautical miles from Geraldton on the fishing grounds. Mahi mahi (dolphinfish) are always attracted to the floats on our fishing gear. Strict regulations mean we are not allowed a single hook or fishing line onboard and the boys miss out on a delicious feed, but it is a relatively small price to pay when we have a well managed sustainable fishery. #dolphinfish #mahimahi #deepseafishing #crab

10.01.2022 Today Sustainable Seafood Week Australia kicks off! This 9 15 March 2020, Australians across the country will be celebrating the fisheries, retailers, chefs a...nd eateries that support sustainable seafood. Australias fish stocks are well managed and a majority are healthy, with almost 85% were classified sustainable or recovering. The Status of Australian Fish Stock Reports, a series of assessments of the biological sustainability of a broad range of wild-caught fish stocks against a nationally agreed framework, reviewed a total 120 species in 2018 90% of the total of Australian species commercially fished. The 2018 edition saw the addition of 37 new species, which were nominated by the FRDC and Jurisdictionsstates and the Northern Territory. A key achievement of the SAFS Reports has been to harmonise the systems used to do stock assessments across all jurisdictions. The Report also provides a basis for the Australian Governments report against the UNs Sustainable Development Goals Indicator (SDGs) 14.4.1, proportion of fish stocks within biologically sustainable levels, which Australia as a signatory, reports on progress towards delivering. (https://www.sdgdata.gov.au/goals/life-below-water/14.4.1) You can search the Status of Australian Fish Stock (SAFS) Reports for species and jurisdiction information at www.fish.gov.au. 08.01.2022 Sent in by our skipper Aaron on his most recent crab trip. The weather man had been a little less accurate than we would like so the boys ended up copping it a bit. Even still they managed to bring it a good load of great quality crab. #weather #waves #crab #fishing

03.01.2022 Our researchers have recently returned from the Gascoyne region where they conducted their biannual, industry-funded, independent stock survey of the crystal cr...ab, Chaceon albus. This species, which is found in waters between 600 and 800m deep off the WA coast, is the key target species of the West Coast Deep Sea Crustacean Fishery. Independent surveys control for factors which may affect catch rates such as bait, location and fishing gear. They are world’s best practice in assessing fisheries stocks and are crucial in the ongoing maintenance of this fishery’s #MSC certification, which was first attained in 2015.
