11.01.2022 ENGAGING kids with SHARKS can help teach CURRICULUM themes to all ages and abilities. Most children are naturally fascinated by sharks, so it’s no surprise that sharks can be an extremely useful tool to hook in kid’s interest and engage them to learn a whole range of curriculum topics, without them even realising! Possible primary curriculum themes include: adaptation, habitats, human impact, food webs, natural selection, classification and more!... Want to know more? 1. Check out out shark blog: https://www.oceanlifeeducation.com.au/how-to-engage-kids-w/ 2. 09.01.2022 Today marks the first ever World Manta Day! ... and since #ladyelliotisland is known as HOME of the Manta Ray we couldn't let this one slip by If you've been... or are dreaming of visiting Lady Elliot Island, usually swimming with a manta ray is apart of your Island bucket list ... but why is swimming with these gentle giants so special? On Lady Elliot Island, Project Manta - The manta rays of Australia have identified 1031 individual manta rays! The project has been running for 13 years and during this time their research has been critical in understanding their biology, ecology, distribution and movement patterns along the east coast of Australia. In 1982 the very first confirmed manta ray identification was recorded on Lady Elliot Island - Manta Ray #134 'Taurus' a now mature male and the oldest known manta ray alive! Spotted numerous times around Lady Elliot Island, Lydie Couturier captured the below identification shot! Sadly, manta rays are under threat around the world Manta ray gill plates are consumed as a psuedo-remedy in regions of China and East Asia. This is the main driving force behind their capture Manta rays can get easily entangled in fishing nets and die as bycatch Unsustainable and unregulated tourism can drive mantas away from important cleaning and feeding sites through overcrowding and poor in-water behaviour Climate change threatens to change the distribution and abundance of zooplankton which mantas feed on What you can do to help manta rays!? 1 Submit your identification photos to [email protected] or #projectmanta and join in the #citizenscience 2 Share your favourite manta ray or identification photos on social media with #worldmantaday 3 Learn and spread the word about these magical animals 4 Support manta ray research groups around the world 5 Be a responsible traveller and ensure to follow appropriate guidelines with snorkelling or diving with manta rays Lydie Couturier #thisisqueensland #seeaustralia #southerngreatbarriereef #visitbundaberg #visitfrasercoast #divequeensland #greatbarrierreeffoundation #gbrmarinepark #citizensofthegreatbarrierreef #masterreefguides
