20.01.2022 What the coral!! November in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park is a very special time! Not only do our sea turtles begin their nesting season, our corals also find their time to shine (or spawn)! Coral spawn is one of natures most spectacular events. Hard, stony corals that are responsible for building the amazing reef structures of the Great Barrier Reef simultaneously reproduce, once a year, on cues from the lunar cycle and the water temperature. This incredible evolutiona...ry adaptation gives corals the best chance for widespread reproduction across reefs all over the world. By simultaneously releasing these reproductive cells called gametes into the water column, it creates an underwater blizzard of millions of these cells. Now many of these get eaten by fish but those that fuse form an embryo and then ultimately coral larvae that can settle on an appropriate area on the reef. This event is arguably the most important in the reefs calendar! Particularly for us in the Whitsundays, where the damage from Cyclone Debbie back in March 2017, is still highly evident. There has been a positive recovery in the region since this extreme weather event, but a successful annual spawning has never been more important for the regeneration of our local reefs! 17.01.2022 Like a big thank-you from mother-nature, our crew were lucky enough to encounter these rare False Killer Whales last week, after a day spent conducting surveys on the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park! In conjunction with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Ocean Rafting is proud to be actively involved in a large scale reef mapping and health survey to help identify the reefs health and recovery progress after Cyclone Debbie, back in 2017! After completing 27 surveys ...of various locations around the stunning Visit Whitsundays, Queensland, Australia, 12 of these beauties spent over 30 minutes circling the boat off Hook Island. We, and the crew onboard, feel this is epic encounter is definitely a bit of positive karma for the teams eco-efforts! False Killer Whales are a species of Oceanic Dolphin that share similar characteristics to the Killer Whale (hence the name!). These creatures, however, are no small dolphin! Reaching lengths of almost 5m’s some of the adult members of this pod were well over a third of the length of our 12m vessels when they came for a bow ride on the way home. Make sure you turn the volume up and listen to their beautiful song! These amazing encounters are shared through the Eye on the Reef Network, the official citizen science network for the Marine Park Managers and hopefully, YOU when you come to visit us for a tour of the beautiful Whitsundays! Ocean Rafting's team of eco-hosts, marine biologists and Master Reef Guides have been closely monitoring and documenting the health of the reef in our local snorkel sites. Since being back up and running, we have noticed thriving marine life and excellent recovery from the sections of reef that were experiencing bleaching during the summer. We saw bleaching due to warmer waters in specific species of coral including branching corals, fire corals and anemones. We are pleased to say that from our long term monitoring through Eye on the Reef, we can report an almost complete recovery! 08.01.2022 Last week, our friends at Parley Australia again joined Ocean Rafting on their bi-annual beach clean-ups around the pristine Whitsunday Islands! With perfect conditions, and an eager team from Parley, Ocean Rafting and passionate locals aboard, we set out for Hook and Haslewood Islands. With Northerly winds onside, this opened up our South-East facing beaches, which unfortunately cop the majority of our prevailing winds and swells, thus bringing an increased amount of marine ...plastics and debris. Over two days, we collectively removed half a tonne of plastic waste and marine solution. From tooth-brushes to Indonesian fishing nets, the haul again indicates the varied sources and global scale of this crisis at hand! Such a global crisis, requires global action. 01.01.2022 Ocean Rafting's guests were treated to this insane encounter this week, with what may be an extremely rare albino Bottlenose Dolphin, now aptly named 'Luna'! The youngster was spotted by our eco-host and mer-man, Thomas, on our Northern Exposure tour this week off Whitsunday and Hook Island. The pod curiously interacted with our vessel, as our crew and guests watched on in awe! Dolphins are a common sight aboard Ocean Rafting, but this seemingly all white juvenile has left t...he team stunned! Despite appearing to be completely white, it is extremely difficult to truely identify the cause. There are several potential explanations, such as being a true albino, or pigment deficiency and loss as a result of a lack of malanin. Stay tuned as we consult the experts to try and get a better understanding of this unique encounter!
