25.01.2022 Back on a theme... We've switched our dometic battery (200amp hour) from AGM to LiFePo4, but still have a Lead Acid starting battery which charges in the usual ...way from the alternator. The domestic batteries almost exclusively charge from solare/wind/water generators. So they could stand alone. BUT, in the need of serious charging, I would still want to e able to charge them from the engine alternator. Is that possible without smoking the alternator - or failing to adequately charge the LiFePo4 battery? See more

19.01.2022 Well... we've just emailed this itinerary to Pantaenius UK for our Ends of the Earth Climate Challenge voyage. They were keen to know our route to Europe and the details of the crew to pass on to the underwriters. Frankly a bit scary waiting to hear back, but they'd need the details sooner or later - probabaly better now :-)

10.01.2022 Hi, technical off-grid electricity moment - becoming urgent, if you can help... OK, I have bought 2x12 volt lithium ion batteries (for my outboard). On the boat I have in parallel 2x220 amp hour AGM (lead acid) domestic batteries charged by solar, wind and water-towed propellor. They sit around 13.3v when charging, but 12.7 otherwise, dropping to 12.4 or less under load with no wind/sun etc. Now I understand the lithium ion batteries will sit some way over 12.7v most of the t...ime until they suddenly drop off. My question is this: If the Li-ions are connected in parallel with the AGMs for charging/discharging as part of the domestic system, then if they sit at 12.8 while the lead acids have dropped below that, won't the Li-ion simply drain away (right up till they are completely empty) back-charging the AGMs. If so, I could put a black box between the two systems (as I have between the engine-start battery and the 2x220 AGMs). That denies back-flow once the AGMs drop below 12.6v.... This would be fine, but denies the Li-ions from contributing anything except when the AGMs are nearly full at 12.6v. Sorry, if that was all a bit obscure, but please do chat with me in the comments if you can add anything. I need to get these Li-ion puppies charged by tomorrow so I can use the outboard! Thanks See more

04.01.2022 Friday 27th November. Just six weeks to go till we set off for Macquarie Island. And with a couple of sailing/ training weekends to fit in before Christmas, not to mention New Year's Eve on Sydney Harbour, I've got my work cut out to finish the 'essentials' to-do list. Time to crack on.
