25.01.2022 We've a good spread of 3 different species of clover across the farm. Here's a pics of each one. If anyone knows the species' names please let us know. Many thanks!

25.01.2022 One of last years pet lambs has taken a liking to walking up the sheep loading ramp to check out the view for a while, and then coming back down again to rejoin the rest of the crew. "Cheeky monkey"!

24.01.2022 After whats been a couple of years now one of the natural water spring systems on the additional block is finally showing some activity again following the rainfall events since February. The hole in the foreground only ever has spring water in it (no run-off area around it), thus the milky colour and the level has increased by about 30 cm. The second hole has filled to the level you can see due to rainfall runoff. The level is now rising slowly further due to spring activit...y and is almost to the level of the overflow pipe we installed when the holes were cleaned out. With a bit of luck in the next couple of days well know if the pipe works. It could be blocked due to unknown critter activity such as mice. The far hole has no direct spring feed and is at the level you can see solely due to runoff. We are hoping that the overflow from the pipe will lift the level a bit; but as the season hots up its unlikely the flow rate will exceed evaporation. Anyway ... "all will be revealed in the fullness of time" as the saying goes. See more

24.01.2022 A close up view of some of our heifers grazing and checking us out Sunday 8th November 2020. #ochrearch

23.01.2022 50 mm + in the past 24 hours. A few resultant photos!

23.01.2022 Here's a few of our new heifers, each with their flash new management tags. They seem to have now settled ... and are quite curious critters.

23.01.2022 Our niece Charlotte is staying with us at the moment, together with her horse, "Red". In this photo ... one of our pet sheep "Gussy" up close with Red. Pretty fearless that Gussy!

22.01.2022 Were trialing a motion detection activated game camera presently. Heres some pics from our first attempt. Several lessons learned!

22.01.2022 Jan was in 'the best spot' on sundown. Comfy log to sit on ... and fires on both sides to keep warm.

22.01.2022 I wonder what these 3 galahs were chatting about!

20.01.2022 Lambing season has begun! We found this little one well away from the mob. Given how strong it was we took it back near the edge of the mob and will let them sort things out.

20.01.2022 The are some quite impressive grassed areas on the farm presently. This is what the area to the east of Stu's Hill looks like at the moment.

20.01.2022 It was a perfect evening for a bonfire. Heres a couple of pics.

18.01.2022 4 distinctly different blooms on the one Sticky Everlasting plant we came across in Lookout Rock paddock earlier this afternoon. The plants were all about 1.5 metres tall ... and pretty impressive.

18.01.2022 It was a perfect evening for a bonfire. Here's a couple of pics.

18.01.2022 Beer O'Clock on Launchpad Rock. Not a jet-trail in the sky to be seen!

17.01.2022 Our landing area is now fully back in action following the recent rainfall events.

17.01.2022 For those with an interest in native plants ... here's an impressive video compiled by our Local Landcare Coordinator together with our local wattles expert Mikla Lewis. Congrats to both Melanie and Mikla. By the way ... we've several of the wattles referenced in the video here on Ochre Arch. https://weddinlandcare.us16.list-manage.com/track/click

16.01.2022 We're never quite sure what will turn up on the farm from time to time. This morning ... a roo near near the (outdoor) loo.

16.01.2022 A couple of months ago we set up one of our mobile stock troughs down from the house on the dam water gravity fed supply. We moved the stock out of the paddock a couple of days later but didn't get around to draining and cleaning the trough until today. It was interesting to see how clear the water was (due to recent rains) and the amount of algae that had grown. See below.

16.01.2022 Our 2 recently acquired lots of heifers both came through their respective isolation periods with no obvious health issues. That being the case we worked with them today - vaccinating, drenching, placing our own management tags on them for ease of management going forward and manually recording the external numbers from their individual NLIS tags. In this photo you can see the management tags we removed from those that had some already. Both lots have now been boxed and will run as one herd going forward.

15.01.2022 A mix of farm photos from the past few days ....

15.01.2022 'Miss Pearl' 'helping' Jan unload the fire wood from the trailer.

14.01.2022 Paddock BBQ's are 'back on' at Stu's Hill here on the farm.

14.01.2022 A bit chilly this morning ....

13.01.2022 We enjoyed a Paddock BBQ on Stu's Hill today. What was particularly puzzling was the disappearance of the BBQ plate we keep on site. Anyway ... we took the opportunity to break-in a plow disk as the permanent replacement. Worked like a treat!

10.01.2022 Our 'list of bird species seen on the farm' increased by 1 to a total of 106 today. We spotted a pair of Plumed Whistling-Duck (Dendrocygna eytoni) at the Needlewood Dam. Here's a link to the listing on Wikipedia. They are quite striking in appearance. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plumed_whistling_duck

10.01.2022 Two photos taken by the trail camera yesterday that we decided to share. Noisy Miner in flight ... and some White-winged Chuffs.

10.01.2022 I wonder what these 3 'galahs' were chatting about!

09.01.2022 A few pics from this afternoon's walk around the farm ...

09.01.2022 Some of the wattles on the farm are kicking in to full bloom. Heres one of the Western Golden Wattles in the front paddock not far from the house.

09.01.2022 A lovely winters afternoon. Perfect for moving the sheep. Belle says hello!

09.01.2022 Mother and son kicking back on a foggy winter's morning.

08.01.2022 We had a few more heifers delivered today. Thatll do us for a while. The process was more than a tad more exciting than expected. First and last time well agree to allow the stock carrier to let his dogs go for a run after the cattle were offloaded!

08.01.2022 We had a few challenges with our off grid power supply early this morning. Fortunately due to the web based connectivity set-up that our supplier put in place during the recent system upgrade coupled with the supplier fortuitously (for us) having a sleepless night he picked up our email sent at 4.24 am and within an hour had remotely logged in to the controller and sorted the issue. The wonders of modern technology! Here's a screen print of the 'Quickview' of the system controller. We are able to access the system from the laptop in the house to do things like check the status and start and stop the back-up generator.

08.01.2022 Here's a few recent Jan photos we thought you might like.

08.01.2022 We witnessed a contest over a House Mouse between a Spotted Harrier and a Little Raven not far from the house today. Here's some photos we just managed to capture.

08.01.2022 Heres a few of our new heifers, each with their flash new management tags. They seem to have now settled ... and are quite curious critters.

07.01.2022 It was lovely to see a Diamond Dove here at the house yesterday. Only the second one we've seen since being here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamond_dove

07.01.2022 One result of making some tracks through this year's flush of Echium plantagineum.

07.01.2022 After a couple of years we are now back in the beef business, in a small way at least. We've acquired a few weaner Angus heifers from country still in drought around Cooma. They arrived yesterday and this morning are still very 'flighty'. We'll work quietly with them and should have them calmed down within a couple of weeks. Sorry ... not the best of photos ... we couldn't get within about 150 metres and did not want to press them at all.

07.01.2022 A few pics from this afternoons walk around the farm ...

07.01.2022 It was the perfect day for a fly-in and drive-in visit combo.

07.01.2022 Some people have pet dogs or cats that camp outside their back door. For us its our pet lamb, Pearl.

06.01.2022 Pearl looks like a proper little sheep now!

06.01.2022 Jan was in the best spot on sundown. Comfy log to sit on ... and fires on both sides to keep warm.

06.01.2022 Our apricot tree is in full bloom presently. Things look promising for a good crop this year.

05.01.2022 We enjoyed a Paddock BBQ on Stus Hill today. What was particularly puzzling was the disappearance of the BBQ plate we keep on site. Anyway ... we took the opportunity to break-in a plow disk as the permanent replacement. Worked like a treat!

05.01.2022 Mother and son kicking back on a foggy winters morning.

05.01.2022 Just a few photos taken on the farm today. Magic weather!

05.01.2022 Our oldest pet ewe Miss Essie has produced the first of this years lambs. Meet "Eli"!

04.01.2022 A few recent farm photos ...

04.01.2022 We are in the past few days seeing jet planes flying over our area once again. Must be due to relaxation of the COVID 19 restrictions.

03.01.2022 It was February last year that our main dam that supplies (via a gravity fed water pipe line) us with toilets and garden water proved too low for use. Since then we've had an alternate supply in place using bore water from the scheme we are a member of. Yesterday the main dam finally filled and is overflowing; prompting us to reconnect to the old supply. Here's a few photos.

02.01.2022 A few of our ewes and lambs with Mount Wheoga at the background. The growth of the lambs is quite something.

02.01.2022 Heres a few recent Jan photos we thought you might like.

02.01.2022 Some of the wattles on the farm are kicking in to full bloom. Here's one of the Western Golden Wattles in the front paddock not far from the house.

01.01.2022 The Spotted Harriers ramped things up today. 3 of them flying very close to the house. Not a raven to be seen ... with the only other bird species within cooee being a cheeky Nankeen Kestrel.

01.01.2022 We brought our trail camera back home to the house last night. It's turned out that the camera was taking 10 second videos every time it detected movement ... meaning a total of 490 videos in all since we put it in place. We'll share some of the videos in the coming days. Here's a starter ... Eastern Rosellas having a bath. It's now obvious that the majority of water used in the trough is for bathing rather than drinking.
