23.01.2022 I'm thrilled to be giving the 2020 Socratic Lecture at the Illawarra Socratic Society on Wednesday 12th of February in Thirroul. Title of the lecture is "The Art of Disagreement in a Disagreeable World". I'll be talking about why it's so hard to have a good disagreement, to work together to find the best answers to the problems we face, and what we can do about it. If you're in the area, I'd love to see you there!

22.01.2022 Friends, I'm seeking Tinder (or similar) horror stories for the book I'm writing about how evolution shapes our moral thinking. I'm particularly interested in stories about deception or lies on profiles (and what happens if they're revealed or challenged), mismatched expectations (like you thought they wanted a relationship but they really wanted sex), and thoughts about double standards relating to gender and how people are judged. Feel free to DM or email tim.dean @ ockhams...beard.com.au. A brief outline of your experience would be great and I can decide whether to follow up for more details or an interview. Thanks!

19.01.2022 I'm thrilled to announce I've just signed with Pan Macmillan to publish my first book! It's about how we have evolved to think about morality, and why our thinking is often out of step with the modern world, contributing to problems like racism, sexism, call-out culture, religious extremism, political tribalism and more. I'm arguing that we need to rethink morality to make it fit with the modern world, and sometimes that'll mean actively working against our nature or deepes...t moral traditions. That's not going to be easy, but I don't think we have a choice. It's scheduled for release in 2021.

16.01.2022 Every society ever encountered has had some kind of spiritual beliefs, even if they have taken wildly diverse forms. But where did they come from? And how did they evolve into the big global religions we see today? It turns out that, in some ways, we're wired to believe in gods, but big religions are much more than that! Tune in to ABC 702 Sydney tonight between 5.00 and 5.30pm to hear me speak with Richard Glover about the evolution of religion on Self Improvement Wednesday.

15.01.2022 The amazing Monty and I have recorded a special episode of our podcast, The Meaning of..., this time about the strange times we live in today, and the meaning we might find in the age of COVID-19. Check it out and share your thoughts on what COVID means to you!

12.01.2022 Question for you: who's more dangerous? Someone with weak or absent moral inclinations? Or someone with absolute moral certainty?

05.01.2022 What do philosophers have to say about mental wellbeing and flourishing? It's often better to minimise stress than chase happiness, for one. If you missed me on ABC Radio Sydney yesterday with Josh Szeps, you can listen to the full segment right here. Be well!

03.01.2022 Friends, I have another request for Tinder & dating horror stories for my book. I had a great response last time (thanks to all who replied!), and am now following up looking for more stories about the following specific three themes: 1) Anything where a man misrepresents his intentions for a relationship and turns out to be only after sex. 2) Examples of dates lying on profiles about their age, height, weight or wealth, and how it was revealed.... 3) Stories where men judge women for wanting a hookup instead of a relationship, or where they reinforce traditional gender roles and expectations. If you want to help, please message me your story, aim for a couple of paragraphs max, and also include how you felt about the situation. Also let me know if you'd like the story anonymised should I choose to include it in the book. Thanks all

01.01.2022 This podcast episode on Black Lives Matter was an emotional one for us to record. But it's one of the most important and urgent issues that we've discussed to date. Please give it a listen. I'd love to hear what you think.
