17.02.2022 Although start of school term has been delayed this year for many of us in Qld, now we have a little more time to help our little ones be prepared for a smooth transittion into the new school year. Some great tips from Autism Awareness:

05.02.2022 I will be on leave from Monday 21st February until Friday 25th February (inclusive) to complete professional development training in the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition). This assessment is used to accurately assess and diagnose autism spectrum disorders across age, developmental level, and language skills. It will be a wonderful tool to add to my professional toolbox!

Stay safe everyone!

23.01.2022 A helpful poster highlighting the challenges autistic people experience in trying to be a part of a conversation, have a chat and catch up - something most of us don't give a second thought about doing!

21.01.2022 Welcome to Octavia Therapies. Now taking new bookings.

18.01.2022 Hello everyone! Just a little announcement to say a big thank you... Thank you to all who have been spreading the word of Octavia Therapies. It’s been amazing few months. So much so that I will be unable to take on new families until next year. Waitlist enquires can be made via email: [email protected]

17.01.2022 I’ll be away for the next few days to attend a workshop. Therapy sessions resume Wednesday 21st April. Have a great weekend everyone!

16.01.2022 From 1am tomorrow, 2 January, face masks will now be required in all indoor settings except for in the home, if it’s unsafe or if doing strenuous exercise. We... know masks may not feel natural or comfortable, but now that our borders are open for loved ones, it's vital we protect ourselves, family and friends, as COVID-19 cases increase. Employers are also urged to return to work-from-home arrangements as much as practical. For more information, visit https://www.qld.gov.au/health/covid19/masks

16.01.2022 Even the dog came home relaxed. I’m back in action and looking forward to seeing you all this week. - Rita

15.01.2022 Fun fact: ASD represents itself many different ways in many different people , as individuals we naturally adapt to survive and these secondary coping mechanis...ms are the ones the can get on our family and friends nerves Some of us don’t know what is too hot or too cold . What is hungry or what is full . I have a distinct problem with recognising pain due to not having an emotional response to pain. Some people don’t know what tired is . Sound complicated ?? Example : I can’t tell by looking at an item inside another one how much is too much or not enough - this can be quite scary as a child (imagine it similar to looking at one of those illusions or 3D puzzles in a book but every time you go to eat... every get a headache from them ?? Yeh it’s like that) So I coped by using the same forks knives plates bowls and cups ... meaning it was hard to eat without them . As an adult I usually by the same thing to make the same recipe ... so I understand how much I need for how much I need to eat regardless of the recipe I do not see what is enough too much or just right or not enough I just see an illusion that gives me a headache. Now this is a whole packet of bacon , on a plate I have never used and a brand and size of bacon I have never bought .... I have no flipping idea if this was enough food , too much , or if I had put the right amount on my plate ... all the words in are words we daily use to describe instructions tasks and feelings to each other eg. babe do we have enough bacon .... I don’t know - but if I buy the same bacon and we use the same plates and I distribute it the same as I did last time then I remember what people said and whether that amount was correct or if I didn’t finish it all or did finish it or had enough for lunch tomorrow (all of which I don’t know until I recognise I no longer wish to eat what I’m eating anymore) . Then I know that based on this bacon on this pan with these people (taking into account their prior eating behaviour and verbal cues and feed back last time I cooked this or the last time I saw them eat or engage in this social food interaction ) - yes babe I think there is enough bacon . So next time your kid or friend or partner is frantically looking for their water cup ... instead of saying just use another. Try saying things like - Can I help you look for it Can we find one with the same feature What does this cup do to help you let’s find another way to help you together
