25.01.2022 Mirrored Arts Pavilion to host exhibitions during construction of M+ in Hong Kong The partnership VPANG architects ltd + JET Architecture Inc + Lisa Cheung has... been awarded first place in a competition to design an Arts Pavilion as part of West Kowloon Cultural District. The competition was advertised by WAN's Business Information Service (view brief). The Pavilion, located in a park on the waterfront with spectacular views overlooking Victoria Harbour, aims to provide an exhibition and event space for artists, designers, organisations and other parties planning to stage independent small-scale exhibitions and events in West Kowloon Cultural District. In the run-up to the completion of the M+, a future museum for 20th and 21st century visual culture designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the Pavilion will also serve as the museum's primary site for its exhibitions, to further extend the its mission into the park and public sphere. The Pavilion is planned complete in 2015. The winning pavilion by VPANG architects ltd + JET Architecture Inc + Lisa Cheung is designed to offer a respite from hectic city life and impressed the judges with a smart simplistic approach which allows the volume to blend into its surroundings. Mirrored external walls camouflage the architecture, reflecting the surrounding expanses of greenery and immersing the building within its Park setting. To further this experience, the Pavilions main exhibition space is elevated, allowing it to float above the foliage and creating the opportunity for artwork to be appreciated against a backdrop of the Hong Kong Island skyline with spectacular views out over Victoria Harbour. The building is designed to be surrounded by natural light, away from noise. Inside, gallery spaces are created by polished concrete floors and white walls - a flexible backdrop for multidisciplinary art exhibitions and performances.

24.01.2022 SO WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?? Renewal SA is now responsible for the development of the site and will conduct feasibility studies into specific uses. ODASA will prepare a final report and the Government Architect will remain involved in the process going forward. Design outcomes from the competition will inform a strategic framework and a master plan will be prepared for public consultation. The People's Choice Award will be part of the design outcomes that the government considers for the next phase of the project. This really is just the start of the process!

04.01.2022 Construction is underway on the tallest tower in Nanning, China. Designed by John Portman & Associates, the Guangxi Financial Investment Center (previously know...n as the Tianlong Fortune Center) will stand at 1,312ft when it completes, making it the tallest structure in the region. The elegant form begins with a square base, broadening to an octagon at the middle before returning to a square plan at the top. At the top of the soaring tower will be an executive club and destination restaurant, with renderings suggesting an open-air sky garden planted with mature trees. Below this will sit a 5-star atrium hotel with fitness centre, pool, restaurant and business centre. The remainder of the tower will be dedicated to prime commercial space, focusing on the financial sector. A previous article about the Guangxi Financial Investment Center can be found here.
