25.01.2022 The odd man is laying a bit of concrete this week on Castle Hill. The easy bit is next to the house. As long as you don't find residual concrete leftover from WW2. And right on the back door path. The client hand laid every rock 40 years ago, sourced from landfill, chucked in the boot of the car and laid when they got home. Now they are a hip breaking risk, waiting to happen. It rained on me. Residual concrete is a stay for an antenna. I am sure someone is going to forget there is no rock path, off the bottom step.

25.01.2022 I got a new Briggs and Stratton Tiger today. The smallest commercial lawn mower out there. Came cheap. Had to bolt all of the assemblies together. Kids helped. Purred like a Tiger

25.01.2022 Today was the completion of an epic 17 day project for a client at Alice River in the Townsville rural area. Scope of project was to remove, repair and replace existing culvert, remove pavers from collapsed driveway, re-lay pavers that were twisted out to 25 metres, identify and remediate driveway, reinforce driveway, install drainage, re-lay all pavers. Lay turf to mitigate soil erosion. Professional assistance and materials were supplied by Regional Certification Group, Kerbways Structural Concreters, Cleveland Bay Plumbing, Flintstones Landscaping Land and Paragon Gardens Turf.

23.01.2022 So the Odd Man needed to trim his own trees. A little history, the previous owner liked the big trees, but every storm, they downed the power lines. So on moving in, Dave Walton, Ian Mills and I re shaped the trees. Now for the last year they have just been trimmed. So this afternoon when everyone was out I trimmed them into squares. If no one likes them, I will knock the corners off and we an have octagons instead. Now that's thinking outside the square.

23.01.2022 What an awesome day, start at sunrise and knock off at 1pm. Continued working on Hyde Park job. Shifting soil, weeding, bit of a mow. David Whitehead, Cleveland Bay Plumbing asks me to drop in to a joint client on Castle Hill, water leak downstairs, how about a main water line rupture between the meter and house. She has a temporary water feed to her house whilst insurance company sorts out its thing. Isorted all the preliminaries and David rocks up to do the licenced stuff. Great working combination. Start in the dark, finish in the dark. Good day on the tools.

22.01.2022 Today I was awarded the QBuild contract for landscaping services to Palm Island. First off I have to do a display garden in Kirwan, Townsville. Next FY there is many gardens to create on Palm Island using local employ, FIFO. Big thanks to Stuart Watson, Ceclia Ayoub and Bernie Hock. All the BNI brethren. BNI works for me. Anyone in Townsville want to come along to a awesome breakfast, meet business leaders and promote your business?

21.01.2022 I was going in to my Wednesday morning BNI Velocity business breakfast when a bird laid waste to my entire left arm. I reckoned that I was in for a good day. After a bit of hard yakka on the side of Castle Hill building a rock wall, I started the General's garden at NQ Legal. Afterward I went and visited a new wholesaler of plants. They only trade to qualified landscapers. I explained my life of Army training and I am in. Found some very rare plants, one which was planted this afternoon. Melicope Muelliera, an essential plant in the Ulysses Butterflies habitat. And they gave it to me at about 30% of retail. Gold.

20.01.2022 The chookens should be moving into their new home today. Put down a fibrecrete concrete slab yesterday for the chooks new home. Clients all put a hand print and I did a palm leaf impression.

19.01.2022 Big day for The Odd Man. First task, a clean up of a yard and pool for a house listed for sale with Tarquinius Watson at North Ward Reality. Second Task, help Scouts at a working bee. I got the pruning job and tree trimming. Watched some parents lay 4 metres of pavers for 4 hours, gave them my tools, then I laid 10 metres in one hour when finished pruning. And I didn't stick my nose in to their work. Tired now and the little trailer is chockas.

18.01.2022 Two feature Desert Roses to a clients front door planted yesterday. Yellow and Triple Santa.

18.01.2022 Did the final job of cleaning/clearing the yards at Rose Street, North Ward for Tarquinn from North Ward Reality. Tarquinn is a no bull$hit real estate man. Tells clients straight up what they need to do to sell their place. He is one of Townsville's most successful agents, must be the no bull5hit policy. Some of the palm leaves to take away.

17.01.2022 The odd man's better half is taking him out for dinner and movies, no kids. Thought I would go undercover. No one will recognise me now

17.01.2022 I taught six year old Erik to pull weeds with a gadget I borrowed.

17.01.2022 This week I would like to advise on herbicide. Now I get the opportunity to work in a prestige garden where the gardener has made a shumoozle of it. Always stipulate to tradies coming on your property what chemicals you will allow. When working near foliage always shield it to stop over spray, it will kill your treasured plants. I sparingly use a herbicide called BDMA, 2.3 grams per 10 litres of water as a concentrate, then apply as a hose on. All broad leaf plants on the la...wn will die. At 3 grams it will kill buffalo. Couch could probably take a tonne. Lol. Monsanto Round Up or Zero should only be used for spot weeds and WITH the owners permission. Some of my clients have strict policies on herbicide, NQ Legal attract Ulysses And Bird Wing butterflies, Red Throated Finches, Honeyeaters and Green Tree frogs, Miss Rhonda of Castle Hill has Rosellas and Ulysses butterflies, and Miss Betty of Yarrawonga has the Castle Hill goats and Wallabies. These people enjoy their garden with their native wildlife. See more

17.01.2022 The odd man worked Friday and Saturday for Bev from Townsville's Body Shop On Line. We relocated some huge Yacca palms. This morning, it was with much pleasure that my old boss from Kerbways, Townsville's Structional Concrete Specialists bought in a 5 tonne excavator to do some gardening for me. The Yuccas have been happily relocated to Hervey Range Landfill. I got free acupuncture yesterday.

16.01.2022 Not too bad for a cutting 3 months ago

16.01.2022 Gee I love welding in the summer sun in Townsville. My inverter stick/ting welder kept tripping out, so I emptied the esky and in it went. Alls good.

16.01.2022 Completed a major stage today. 80 square metres of couch turf, a few of mulch and 30 plants . Major backyard reno with very tight access. Planting specifically to attract Cairns Birdwing butterflies and Ulysses butterflies. All underground Dripline irrigation, and I will roll the turf tomorrow. I was fairly tired this arvo.

14.01.2022 This is why we don't use glyphosate in Flynn and Stuart's garden at NQ Legal

14.01.2022 Friday was the day that we started fitting out the new archive racking system at NQ Legal, Townsville's Most Approachable Lawyers. Been lots of cutting and drilling high grade 5.8 Australian made RHS steel, been inspected by engineers, tested to near destruction in a laboratory and it came down to the odd man, standing on a ladder, drilling anchor holes in concrete above my head. All 35 of them. The top two holes had to be anchored using "Chemset". I prep'ed all the chem stu...ds and asked the boss if I could borrow the main solicitor for a while, she answered, sorry he's gone out. Well boss you up for the challenge. I explained my strategy, stud line up, brief of how the adhesive works, what tools I need in order. We have six minutes to complete the task of putting in 14 studs. Flynn, the boss, the practice manager, a stunner in a nice flowing dress, was awesome, very precise, very accurate with the correct stud each time. Brilliant stuff. Left me in awe. Pics next week of the finished stage. See more

14.01.2022 With legal advice, I would like to offer an observation and advice to future clients of Aaron the gardener. If you have got a new gardener called Aaron in Townsville I would like to offer the following advice. Does he own a pair of seculars, does he use them, what other cutting implements does he used or do you only use a brush cutter for hedge trimming. I would advise clients that you put in place a herbicide policy in place. Now weeding is hands and knees, digging the weed ...out, not buckets of gylcophosphate (Round Up) being sprayed over everything. Tends to kill everything. Take photos before Aaron arrives, one, two, three weeks later. Evaluate your results. Is this what you wanted. And. Ask for references, name, phone and address, so you can visit before your garden is altered!!!!!not the Internet with his references, they may not be authentic. And, his next multimedia release may have photos that are my work. My photos are time stamped. Here I s one of his jobs of controlling nut grass in a bed of heritage listed plants. Can you spot them? Not the desert roses. I think the heritage listed plants are one cactus. See more

12.01.2022 Had my good friend David Whitehead help me with a clients plumbing on Monday and noticed that the main line was maybe about to blow. He supplied all the info to get remedial action from Townsville Water, and checked up on us. So a bit of digging through a nice garden had to be done. Saved all the plants, and a new main water line will go in soon. When you get ex SGTs Blackie and Whitey on the job, thing tend to turn out grey.

11.01.2022 I trimmed four Lillypilli shrubs with a front garden clean up this morning on the side of Castle Hill, Townsville. Went to pick up the cuttings and went owwwwww. Got spiked. Horrendous blood loss (OK one droplet) but sure did sting. Never knew that Lillypilli, an Australian native had spikes. Below is a spike on a standard business card. Used my welding gloves to pick up the cuttings and tagged the green waste bag that spiked foliage was in it.

10.01.2022 Saturday was big concrete day for the odd man on Castle Hill. Got to use fibre instead of reo, easy stuff but frustrating when the little buggers pop their head out of the surface. Handled the slump better this time.

09.01.2022 We had a big planting day at NQ Legal today. All up 42 plants, mostly natives, all bug, butterfly and bird attracting. A nice Gerbera plant came out with its flower (another carcked it). The lizards like their new safe habitats, the hollow logs, when I don't blow the blower in their faces. More about the Callistemons on a separate post.

08.01.2022 THE PICS ARE NOT MY WORK For six months last year I looked after a heritage listed garden in Townsville, unfortunately I was replaced by the botanists nephew. He claimed to be a gardener. Weeding a garden is get on your hands and knees, work the bugger to the surface, weed, roots and all. Avoid chemicals. Use organic fillers such as mill mud, washed sand, gypsum, non termite attracting mulch. Use urea for leaf growth and seaweed extract for root development. I have been asked to come back to this client. Get the picture.

08.01.2022 Fancy putting on high vis clothing and boots on my day off yesterday. The odd man got the remaining rock for Racheal's garden at Bohle quarry. Have a go at the small bucket on the front end loader.

07.01.2022 Stuart Watson and the odd man are feeling quite generous today at NQ Legal. We are offering a free feed of sardines and prawn flavoured food for the Indian Minor birds.

05.01.2022 Yesterday, the Odd Man probably pulled off his best job so far. My number one client had their car bogged in a paddock at Black River, Townsville. They did not put it there, but it obviously fell to them to recover it. The previous day, heavy equipment made attempts to drive into the paddock, but only got themselves bogged. The place was now a muddy soup. The Odd Man commenced Operation Extraction. After an initial assessment, SMEAC and Risk Assessing, I got into it. First ob...jective, get the car above water and mud, achieved in one hour with nay Sayers, naa that won't work. Now the planking starts. Gum boots filled with mud so they got chucked. After we laboriously got around the corner of the mud, it was a straight run. Raining, ankle to knee deep water, high humidity, asked the client what the aircon temp was in the car. Reply, 99 degrees outside. I apologised a couple of times for splashing mud on the car, when I was up to my neck in it. The resident of the property had a bundle of brand new pine sleepers and offered us some mid way, I took about 90% of them for the home straight run. The client, Stuart Watson really wanted to launch off the pad at the end, and IT just made it. White Line Fever (rugby) I reckon, the end is just so near. All up 1.5 hours of planking through bog, around a corner (never pretty), and a straight run home to terra firma. 2.5 hours of mud therapy. An odd assessment, an odd approach, odd practices, and an odd outcome. Oddly successful. See more

05.01.2022 We have started the QBuild job. Me doing the demolition, clean up and putting in new soil structure, and Racheal gets to order my bulk requirements. Now my unique soil is loam, sand, bagasse, decomposed peanut shell, shredded dried palm leaves, minerals including calcium, gypsum, potassium, iron and sulphur. I don't have millmud included in the mix, I put it in afterwards. Just so little black spots don't transfer into the premises. Lesson learnt. There is no fertiliser in the soil. Soil is my business, I love soil

03.01.2022 The Odd Man is working for an odd client this afternoon. He has done time in the ADF and is a seriously cool dude. Putting in a spoon drain between a shed and a fence. The client has a fridge full of cold beer for me. Note: Odd socks.

03.01.2022 I had an audience today planting at NQ Legal. He didn't have much to say so plant placement must of been spot on.

03.01.2022 Glyphosate is NOT how you weed gardens and turf. Yeah, I have been asked to return to Townsville's garden of Eden after an idiot has had a run. Below is how an idiot controls weeds in couch turf. Makes my stomach turn.

03.01.2022 Epic day on the tools. Spread seriously a lot of fine mulch Lay turf Spread soil for turf Care for recently laid turf,

02.01.2022 Look what the odd man got from Santa

01.01.2022 The Odd Man gave a 10 minute presentation of my business this morning at the BNI Breakfast in the city. The Balcony was packed out with members and visitors, so the pressure was on. I had the crowd in stitches at times, and picked up two new clients. I even got dressed up for the special event.
